Cormorants (median numbers of 54.5 ind.) excreted ca. 102.7 kg yr−1 of nitrogen and ca. 80.5 kg yr−1 of phosphorus in the area of the Dobczyce Reservoir (ca. 980 ha). Concentrations of N-tot and P-tot were 3 times higher in soil from the roosting area of the cormorants than outside this area. Nutrient concentrations in the littoral sediment of the reservoir were also higher in the area frequented by these birds. Differences in concentrations of pH, NO3, NO2, NH4+, PO4, and P-tot in water between the area associated with the cormorants and the reference site were not found. Differences in the planktonic algal communities from around the roost and the reference site were not found, with the exception of the chlorophytes which were more abundant in the area occupied by the cormorants. Water movement and mixing in the reservoir can influence the effect of the nutrient load on the water chemistry and planktonic algae.  相似文献

According to kin selection theory, the colony kin structure of eusocial insects motivates workers' altruistic behaviors and therefore their sterility or restricted reproduction [1]. Indeed, theory and cross-species comparison confirm that workers engage in their own reproduction depending on relatedness among colony members [2, 3]. We show that in a honeybee colony, the workers switch from their typical altruistic role to a more selfish one if at their larval stage there are environmental cues of an upcoming decline in intracolony relatedness. This happens inevitably when a colony multiplies by swarming and replaces the mother queen with her daughter, because the mother queen's workers are faced with rearing the sister queen's offspring related to them half as much as between sisters. Workers developing from the mother queen's eggs immediately after swarming, in a temporarily queenless colony, had more ovarioles in their ovaries and less-developed hypopharyngeal glands producing brood food than control workers reared in queenright conditions. These "rebel" workers were more engaged in laying their own male-determined eggs than in rearing offspring, whether or not the sister queen was present in the colony. The finding of this previously unknown rebel strategy confirms that kin selection shapes both cooperation and conflict in honeybee societies.  相似文献

Formation of dinitrosyl iron complexes (DNICs) was observed in a wide spectrum of pathophysiological conditions associated with overproduction of NO. To gain insight into the possible genotoxic effects of DNIC, we examined the interaction of histidinyl dinitrosyl iron complexes (HIS-DNIC) with DNA by means of circular dichroism. Formation of DNIC was monitored by EPR and FT/IR spectroscopy. Vibrational bands for aquated HIS-DNIC are reported. Dichroism results indicate that HIS-DNIC changes the conformation of the DNA in a dose-dependent manner in 10 mM phosphate buffer (pH 6). Increase of the buffer pH or ionic strength decreased the effect. Comparison of HIS-DNIC DNA interaction with the effect of hydrated Fe2+ ion revealed many similarities. The importance of iron ions in HIS-DNIC induced genotoxicity is confirmed by plasmid nicking assay. Treatment of pUC19 plasmid with 1 μM HIS-DNIC did not affect the plasmid supercoiling. Higher concentrations of HIS-DNIC induced single strand breaks. The effect was completely abrogated by addition of deferoxamine, a specific strong iron chelator. Our data reveal that formation of HIS-DNIC does not prevent DNA from iron-induced damage and imply that there is no direct interrelationship between iron–NO coordination and their mutual toxicity modulation.  相似文献

The mitochondrial matrix protease CLPP plays a central role in the activation of the mitochondrial unfolded protein response (UPRmt) in Caenorhabditis elegans. Far less is known about mammalian UPRmt signaling, although similar roles were assumed for central players, including CLPP. To better understand the mammalian UPRmt signaling, we deleted CLPP in hearts of DARS2‐deficient animals that show robust induction of UPRmt due to strong dysregulation of mitochondrial translation. Remarkably, our results clearly show that mammalian CLPP is neither required for, nor it regulates the UPRmt in mammals. Surprisingly, we demonstrate that a strong mitochondrial cardiomyopathy and diminished respiration due to DARS2 deficiency can be alleviated by the loss of CLPP, leading to an increased de novo synthesis of individual OXPHOS subunits. These results question our current understanding of the UPRmt signaling in mammals, while introducing CLPP as a possible novel target for therapeutic intervention in mitochondrial diseases.  相似文献

The functions of actin family members during development are poorly understood. To investigate the role of beta-actin in mammalian development, a beta-actin knockout mouse model was used. Homozygous beta-actin knockout mice are lethal at embryonic day (E)10.5. At E10.25 beta-actin knockout embryos are growth retarded and display a pale yolk sac and embryo proper that is suggestive of altered erythropoiesis. Here we report that lack of beta-actin resulted in a block of primitive and definitive hematopoietic development. Reduced levels of Gata2, were associated to this phenotype. Consistently, ChIP analysis revealed multiple binding sites for beta-actin in the Gata2 promoter. Gata2 mRNA levels were almost completely rescued by expression of an erythroid lineage restricted ROSA26-promotor based GATA2 transgene. As a result, erythroid differentiation was restored and the knockout embryos showed significant improvement in yolk sac and embryo vascularization. These results provide new molecular insights for a novel function of beta-actin in erythropoiesis by modulating the expression levels of Gata2 in vivo.  相似文献

Salicylates were the first non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to be used in any species and are still widely used in humans and livestock. However, the data on their pharmacokinetics in animals is limited, especially after repeated administration. Evidence exist that in chickens (Gallus gallus) salicylate (SA) may induce its own elimination. The aim of this study was to investigate salicylate pharmacokinetics and egg residues during repeated administration of sodium salicylate (SS) to laying hens. Pharmacokinetics of SA was assessed during 14 d oral administration of SS at daily doses of 50 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg body weight to laying hens. On the 1st, 7th and 14th d a 24 h-long pharmacokinetic study was carried out, whereas eggs were collected daily. Salicylate concentrations in plasma and eggs were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection and pharmacokinetic variables were calculated using a non-compartmental model. Mean residence time (MRT), minimal plasma concentration (Cmin, C16h) and elimination half-life (T1/2el) of SA showed gradual decrease in layers administered with a lower dose. Total body clearance (ClB) increased. Layers administered with the higher dose showed a decrease only in the T1/2el. In the low dose group, SA was found only in the egg white and was low throughout the experiment. Egg whites from the higher dose group showed initially high SA levels which significantly decreased during the experiment. Yolk SA levels were lower and showed longer periods of accumulation and elimination. Repeated administration of SS induces SA elimination, although this effect may differ depending on the dose and production type of a chicken. Decreased plasma drug concentration may have clinical implications during prolonged SS treatment.  相似文献
