Circadian and Ultradian Rhythms in Heart Rate and Motor Activity of Smokers, Abstinent Smokers, and Nonsmokers

In a field study, heart rate and motor activity were assessed continuously in 12 male smokers during 2 smoking and 2 abstinence days and in 12 male nonsmokers during 4 days. A circadian analysis revealed earlier activity acrophases in smokers than nonsmokers and earlier heart rate acrophases in abstinent than smoking smokers. Furthermore, heart rate acrophases of smoking smokers significantly anticipated activity acrophases;, whereas in abstinent smokers and nonsmokers the two parameters oscillated in phase. With the use, in smoking smokers, of the individual average smoking interval as a hypothetical ultradian period length, significant periodicities were found for heart rates in 16 and for activity in 15 of 24 observation days. These rhythms were nicotine independent and based on heart rate and activity increases prior to lighting up the cigarettes. Individual frequency spectra for the 16 h after getting up and the 7 h after going to bed did not reveal single dominant frequencies but rather complex frequency distributions. Power spectra of the daytime data revealed no group differences for activity and no heart rate differences between smoking smokers and nonsmokers. In abstinent smokers, however, a significant reduction of heart rate frequencies slower than 1 cycle/135 min and a significant increase of heart rate frequencies faster than 1 cycle/20 min were observed as compared with all other groups. This effect persisted over the 2 abstinence days, suggesting an activity-independent change in the frequency distribution of heart rates after quitting smoking.     

The carpal tunnel syndrome as a probable primary deficiency of vitamin B6 rather than a deficiency of a dependency state

The mean basal specific activities and the mean % deficiencies of the activity of the glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase of the erythrocytes were identical (n.s.) for a group of eight patients with a severe carpal tunnel syndrome and for a group of eight university students. There was no significant difference in the increases in the specific activities for the patients and the students at 4 concentrations of pyridoxal 5′-phosphate. The apparent K_m for the patients and the students was 95 μM and 61 μM (n.s.) respectively. It is concluded from these data in conjunction with previous findings that the carpal tunnel syndrome is a deficiency disease of vitamin B₆, which is probably primary rather than one of a dependency state.

CHROMOSOME NUMBERS IN UMBELLIFERAE. II

Bell , C. Ritchie (U. of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.), and Lincoln Constance . Chromosome Numbers in Umbelliferae. II. Amer. Jour. Bot. 47(1) : 24-32. Illus. 1960.–Chromosome numbers are reported for plants representing an additional 100 taxa of Umbelliferae. Chromosome numbers for 77 of these taxa are published here for the first time, previously published chromosome numbers of 19 taxa are verified, and numbers differing from those previously published are reported in 4 instances. Ten of the genera included here have been previously unknown cytologically. Polyploidy has been discovered in Bowlesia and confirmed in Pimpinella. Aneuploid series appear to occur in Eremocharis, Eryngium, Oenanthe, Perideridia, and Ptilimnium. Every chromosome count is referable to a cited herbarium specimen.     

Male aggression,limited female choice and the ontogeny of mating behaviour in the flesh fly Sarcophaga crassipalpis

Previous work has shown that male flesh flies (Sarcophaga crassipalpis Macquart) exhibit an ontogeny of behaviour from eclosion through sexual maturity that includes extensive changes in the expression of aggressive, non‐aggressive interactive and non‐interactive behaviours. To determine how the presence of a female flesh fly influences the manifestation of these behaviours, male flesh flies of different ages post‐eclosion are paired with same‐age females and their behaviours are monitored in a simple arena during a 50‐min observation period. All flies are socially isolated until pairing. Although the levels of expression of aggressive and non‐aggressive interactive behaviours are depressed relative to previous findings in male‐opponent pairs, the ontogeny of aggression still occurs as indicated by a significant increase, with age, in the agonistic behaviour ‘hold’. Similar to male‐opponent pairs and individual males, the performance by males of the non‐interactive behaviours ‘walking’ and ‘standing’ diminishes, whereas ‘upside‐down’ increases with age. By contrast, ‘grooming’ shows a significant age‐related decline. No courtship behaviours are observed in the males, although the aggressive behaviour ‘hold’ is a significant transition to mating. Females show no obvious courtship or rejection behaviours, although the significant increase in ‘upside‐down’ with age could possibly be a behavioural gateway to mating. The results of this study indicate that extensive age‐related changes encompassing the entire behavioural repertoire are intrinsic to male flesh flies and persist under a variety of different social contexts.
