SYNOPSIS. Structure and morphogenesis, and cytochemical data on Cochlodinium heterolobatum, a new species of unarmored dinoflagellate, were derived from living and fixed material from culture. C. heterolobatum is characterized by the torsion of the girdle which descends in a left-hand spiral 1.8 turns; the sulcus having a torsion of 0.8 turn; a sulcus loop in the epicone; a tongue-shaped lobe in the right hypocone; nucleus in the epicone; and a stigma in the left epicone. Trichocysts and behavior of the nucleus during typical and atypical divisions are described in cells from cultures of different ages. A small form with the specific characters was found. Intracellular bacteria were seen and their growth followed in individuals from cultures of different ages. A possible relationship between those bacteria and the accumulation of metabolites inside old cells is discussed.  相似文献

Some integrated patterns of behavior have been studied in coloniesof Veretillum cynomorium, whose various parts often act as ifthey were those of an individual consisting of the whole colony.The entire colony is involved in slow rhythmical movements,in which phases of contraction alternate with expansion. Thisbehavior corresponds to a permanent reciprocity (or duality)between the zooid-bearing rachis and the peduncle; overall behavioris determined by the number of "functionally active units" whicheither contains at any given time. This number is influencedby the excitatory or restraining effects of external factorssuch as light intensity or the entry of water. In this way,when contraction proceeds, activity of the rachis predominates,whereas during swelling of the colony, activity of the peduncleprevails. Observations on intact colonies and on specimens without peduncles,experiments using light and electrical stimuli, and the studyof peristalsis, all suggest that the mutually reciprocal natureof activity in the rachis and peduncle may be attributed tothe differential influence of external factors on the functionalstate of centers of spontaneous activity or of conduction pathwaysin the colony. Zooids present on the rachis are responsibleboth for the reciprocal activity of the colony and for its morphologicalpolarity.  相似文献

The activity of the glycolytic enzymes PFK, PFP, PK and aldolaseas well as the content of glucose, fructose, glucose-6-phosphateand fructose-6-phosphate were compared in the embryos of airand oxygen-incubated seeds of Strelitzia juncea. Determinationswere made during the first 4 d of incubation, prior to radicleemergence, which commences on day five for oxygen-treated seeds. No difference in PFK activity was found for the two treatments,and for both treatments PFK tended to increase with the incubationperiod. The fr2, 6P2-stimulated PFP activity was slightly higherfor oxygen-incubated seeds, and showed a significant increasein activity over the 4 d incubation period for both treatments.No significant change in the general trend of PK and aldolaseactivity resulted from incubating the seeds in oxygen. The almost equimolar glucose and fructose contents of the embryoswere lower after 1 d of oxygen incubation of the seeds, andthe content decreased sharply during the incubation period.It is concluded that a moderate increase in the glycolytic capacityof embryos resulted from oxygen treatment of S. juncea seeds. The palm weevil, Rhynchophorus palmarum (L.), was collected in cocoons from red ring-diseased coconut palms (Cocos nucifera L.) in Trinidad and Tobago. Juveniles of five species of nematodes were extracted from the genitalia and macerated bodies of newly emerged adults of the palm weevil: Rhadinaphelenchus cocophilus (Cobb) Goodey (the red ring nematode), Teratorhabditis sp., Diplogasteritus sp., Mononchoides sp., and Bursaphelenchus sp. Over 90% of newly emerged weevil females and males were infested internally with red ring nematode juveniles, and over 47% of the weevils contained more than 1,000 red ring nematodes each. There was no significant correlation between weevil body length and the number of red ring nematodes carried internally by each weevil. Teratorhabditis sp. and Diplogasteritus sp. were extracted from over 50% of the palm weevils, and Monochoides sp. and Bursaphelenchus sp. were found in a small proportion of the weevils. Field-collected adult weevils were also internally and externally infested with a Rhabditis sp., which was not observed in or on weevils allowed to emerge from field-collected cocoons.  相似文献

Water deficits at the anthesis stage of rice (Oryza sativa L.)induce a high percentage of spikelet sterility and reduce grainyield. This study attempted to elucidate the direct effectsof water stress on panicle exsertion, spikelet opening, andspikelet desiccation leading to spikelet sterility. A well-wateredtreatment and two water stress levels were imposed in pot-grownplants of IRAT 13 (upland cultivar) and IR20 (lowland cultivar)at the time of flowering under greenhouse conditions A cultivar difference was observed in the flowering responseto water stress with a high sensitivity in IR20. The time courseof panicle exsertion showed an inhibitory effect due to thelow panicle water status. Low panicle water potentials significantlyreduced the number of opened spikelets. Spikelet opening wascompletely inhibited at panicle water potentials below –1·8MPa and –2·3 MPa in IR20 and IRAT 13, respectively.However, the peak spikelet opening time in a day was not influencedby the stress treatment. Spikelets in stressed panicles wereobserved to remain open for a longer period than in the well-wateredpanicles. The role of turgor in spikelet opening is also discussedin the study. At low panicle water potentials, severe desiccationof spikelets and anthers was noted. Summary A pipistrelle bat (Pipistrellus pipistrellus) population in southernmost Sweden was studied for eight consecutive breeding seasons by means of bat boxes. Survival rates were calculated using Cormack's stochastic technique. The mean survival rate of adult females exceeded that of territorial males. Annual variations in survival rates were most evident in males, low rates being observed in years following wet autumns. Energy constraints imposed on territorial males by the mating system, a resource defence polygyny, were assumed to account for the differences obtained in survival rates between the sexes.  相似文献

Botulinum C2 toxin is known to ADP-ribosylate actin. The toxin effect was studied on [3H]noradrenaline secretion of PC12 cells. [3H]Noradrenaline release was stimulated five- to 15-fold by carbachol (100 microM) or K+ (50 mM) and 10-30-fold by the ionophore A23187 (5 microM). Pretreatment of PC12 cells with botulinum C2 toxin for 4-8 h at 20 degrees C, increased carbachol-, K+-, and A23187-induced, but not basal, [3H]noradrenaline release maximally 1.5-to three-fold, whereas approximately 75% of the cellular actin pool was ADP-ribosylated. Treatment of PC12 cells with botulinum C2 toxin for up to 1 h at 37 degrees C also increased stimulated [3H]noradrenaline secretion, whereas toxin treatment for greater than 1 h decreased the enhanced [3H]noradrenaline release stimulated by carbachol and K+ but not by A23187. Concomitantly with toxin-induced stimulation of secretion, 20-50% of the cellular actin was ADP-ribosylated, whereas greater than 60% of actin was modified when exocytosis was attenuated. The data indicate that ADP-ribosylation of actin by botulinum C2 toxin largely modulates stimulation of [3H]noradrenaline release. Moreover, the biphasic toxin effects suggest that distinct mechanisms are involved in the role of actin in secretion.  相似文献

Reactivation of latent herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) by the immediate-early protein Vmw110 was studied by using an in vitro latency system. Adenovirus recombinants that express Vmw110 reactivated latent HSV-2. An HSV-1 mutant possessing a deletion in a carboxy-terminal region of Vmw110 reactivated latent HSV-2, whereas mutant FXE, which has a deletion in the second exon, did not. Therefore, Vmw110 alone is required to reactivate latent HSV-2 in vitro, and the region of Vmw110 defined by the deletion in FXE is important for this process.  相似文献
