Using species abundance models as indicators of habitat disturbance in tropical forests 总被引:7,自引:4,他引:7
1. In temperate communities, species abundance distributions have been used to detect ecosystem disturbance: in undisturbed habitats, distributions are claimed to generally fit log-normal models, whereas in disturbed habitats, distributions fit log-series models.
2. There is a growing literature on the effects of habitat disturbance in tropical ecosystems and several studies suggest that species abundance models may be useful in detecting disturbance, although data are lacking.
3. Nummelin (1998) claims that these models are not universal indicators of forest disturbance, but we highlight a number of problems with the data presented in Nummelin's study and conclude that it is too soon to dismiss these models. We discuss several important points arising from Nummelin's study which need to be considered if species abundance models are to be used appropriately. 相似文献

Identification and Characterization of Aspergillus Nidulans Mutants Defective in Cytokinesis 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Filamentous fungi undergo cytokinesis by forming crosswalls termed septa. Here, we describe the genetic and physiological controls governing septation in Aspergillus nidulans. Germinating conidia do not form septa until the completion of their third nuclear division. The first septum is invariantly positioned at the basal end of the germ tube. Block-and-release experiments of nuclear division with benomyl or hydroxyurea, and analysis of various nuclear division mutants demonstrated that septum formation is dependent upon the third mitotic division. Block-and-release experiments with cytochalasin A and the localization of actin in germlings by indirect immunofluorescence showed that actin participated in septum formation. In addition to being concentrated at the growing hyphal tips, a band of actin was also apparent at the site of septum formation. Previous genetic analysis in A. nidulans identified four genes involved in septation (sepA-D). We have screened a new collection of temperature sensitive (ts) mutants of A. nidulans for strains that failed to form septa at the restrictive temperature but were able to complete early nuclear divisions. We identified five new genes designated sepE, G, H, I and J, along with one additional allele of a previously identified septation gene. On the basis of temperature shift experiments, nuclear counts and cell morphology, we sorted these cytokinesis mutants into three phenotypic classes. Interestingly, one class of mutants fails to form septa and fails to progress past the third nuclear division. This class of mutants suggests the existence of a regulatory mechanism in A. nidulans that ensures the continuation of nuclear division following the initiation of cytokinesis. 相似文献

Ecological restoration is considered to play an important role in mitigating climate change, protecting biodiversity, and preventing environmental degradation. Yet, there are often multiple perspectives on what outcomes restoration should be aiming to achieve, and how we should get to that point. In this study we interview a range of policymakers, academics, and non‐governmental organization (NGO) representatives to explore the range of perspectives on the restoration of Indonesia's tropical peatlands—key global ecosystems that have undergone large‐scale degradation. Thematic analysis suggests that participants agreed about the importance of restoration, but had differing opinions on how effective restoration activities to date have been and what a restored peatland landscape should look like. These results exemplify how ecological restoration can mean different things to different people, but also highlight important areas of consensus for moving forward with peatland restoration strategies. 相似文献

The effects of changing operating conditions on the biooxidation of methyl ethyl and/or methyl isobutyl ketone in continuous flow enrichment culture are examined. Particular emphasis is placed on responses to step changes in feed stream concentrations and to substrate pulses injected directly into the culture supernatant. In general, the enrichment culture was better able to handle transients involving methyl isobutyl ketone, the preferred carbon substrate. However, the highly complex response patterns observed clearly indicated major gaps in knowledge concerning the physiology of methyl ketone-oxidizing bacteria. In spite of the two carbon substrates investigated being major environmental pollutants, their removal in waste biotreatment processes is remarkably little understood. 相似文献

In Drosophila melanogaster, the Polycomb-group (PcG) and trithorax-group (trxG) genes have been identified as repressors and activators, respectively, of gene expression. Both groups of genes are required for the stable transmission of gene expression patterns to progeny cells throughout development. Several lines of evidence suggest a functional interaction between the PcG and trxG proteins. For example, genetic evidence indicates that the enhancer of zeste [E(z)] gene can be considered both a PcG and a trxG gene. To better understand the molecular interactions in which the E(z) protein is involved, we performed a two-hybrid screen with Enx1/EZH2, a mammalian homolog of E(z), as the target. We report the identification of the human EED protein, which interacts with Enx1/EZH2. EED is the human homolog of eed, a murine PcG gene which has extensive homology with the Drosophila PcG gene extra sex combs (esc). Enx1/EZH2 and EED coimmunoprecipitate, indicating that they also interact in vivo. However, Enx1/EZH2 and EED do not coimmunoprecipitate with other human PcG proteins, such as HPC2 and BMI1. Furthermore, unlike HPC2 and BMI1, which colocalize in nuclear domains of U-2 OS osteosarcoma cells, Enx1/EZH2 and EED do not colocalize with HPC2 or BMI1. Our findings indicate that Enx1/EZH2 and EED are members of a class of PcG proteins that is distinct from previously described human PcG proteins. In Drosophila melanogaster, the genes of the Polycomb group (PcG) and trithorax group (trxG) are part of a cellular memory system, which is responsible for the stable inheritance of gene activity. The PcG and trxG genes have been identified in Drosophila as repressors (PcG) (18, 22, 27, 28, 38) and activators (trxG) (20, 21), respectively, of homeotic gene activity. PcG and trxG genes were originally found in Drosophila, but mammalian homologs have also been identified and appear to function like their Drosophila homologs (reviewed in reference 37). It has been proposed that PcG proteins repress gene expression through the formation of multimeric protein complexes. We have recently shown that the human PcG proteins HPH1 and HPH2 coimmunoprecipitate, cofractionate, and colocalize in nuclear domains with the human PcG proteins BMI1 (2, 12, 33) and HPC2, a recently identified, novel human Polycomb protein (33, 34). Furthermore, we have found that the human RING1 protein coimmunoprecipitates and colocalizes with HPC2 and other PcG proteins, indicating that RING1 is associated with, or is part of, the mammalian PcG complex (33, 35). These results indicate that mammalian PcG proteins form a multimeric protein complex. This observation is in agreement with observations that different PcG proteins, including Pc, bind in overlapping patterns on polytene chromosomes in Drosophila salivary gland cells (4, 10, 29).Interestingly, also the trithorax gene product trx colocalizes with Drosophila PcG proteins at many sites on polytene chromosomes (6, 24). Even more strikingly, binding of the trx protein has been mapped to small DNA fragments that also contain binding sites for PcG proteins, the Polycomb response elements (5, 6). This finding is further substantiated by the observation that GAGA factor, the gene product of the trxG gene trithorax-like (Trl) (13), colocalizes with Pc protein within the close vicinity of a Polycomb response element (41). Furthermore, the PcG gene Enhancer of zeste [E(z)] contains a domain with sequence homology with the activator protein trx (17). This observation is in agreement with genetic data which indicate that E(z) can be considered both a PcG gene and a trxG gene (26). Double mutations of E(z) and trxG genes result in homeotic phenotypes which are similar to the homeotic phenotypes which are also observed in double mutants of trxG genes (26). Finally, polytene chromosome binding of the trx protein is strongly reduced in homozygous E(z) mutants (4), and vice versa, polytene chromosome binding of the E(z) protein is reduced in trx mutants (24). These data suggest functional interactions between activators (trxG proteins) and repressors (PcG proteins) that are important for their mode of action. To start to investigate these puzzling features of the E(z) gene product, we used the two-hybrid system (8, 9) in order to identify proteins that interact with a mammalian homolog of E(z), the Enx1/EZH2 protein (15, 16). Here, we report the identification of the human EED protein, which interacts with Enx1/EZH2. EED is the human homolog of eed, a murine PcG gene (7, 36) which has extensive homology with the Drosophila PcG gene extra sex combs (esc) (14, 32, 39). Whereas Enx1/EZH2 and EED coimmunoprecipitate, they neither coimmunoprecipitate nor colocalize with other human PcG proteins, such as HPC2 and BMI1. Our findings indicate that both Enx1/EZH2 and EED form a class of mammalian PcG proteins that is distinct from previously described human PcG proteins. 相似文献

Several alternative explanations have been proposed to account for the evolution of nestling obesity in a variety of avian groups. These predict quite different patterns of fat accumulation, storage and use by chicks of different ages. Yet surprisingly few studies have measured changes in body composition during chick development. We tested the applicability of these hypotheses for fulmars, Fulmarus glacialis, by direct measurement of changes in water, lipid and lean dry mass in growing chicks. Lipid and lean dry mass increased until ca. 70% of the way through chick rearing, but then levelled off. Total body water also increased until the same stage, but gradually declined thereafter, and it was this change rather than fat metabolism that resulted in mass recession. The observed pattern of a continued increase in stored lipid, and most importantly, its maintenance all the way through the mass-recession phase until chicks reach fledging, is incompatible with many of the proposed hypotheses. We suggest that the most likely ultimate explanation for large fat deposits is to fuel chicks during the initial critical period away from the nest site while they learn to forage 相似文献

Land management intrinsically influences the distribution of animals and can consequently alter the potential for density-dependent processes to act within populations. For declining species, high densities of breeding territories are typically considered to represent productive populations. However, as density-dependent effects of food limitation or predator pressure may occur (especially when species are dependent upon separate nesting and foraging habitats), high territory density may limit per-capita productivity. Here, we use a declining but widespread European farmland bird, the yellowhammer Emberiza citrinella L., as a model system to test whether higher territory densities result in lower fledging success, parental provisioning rates or nestling growth rates compared to lower densities. Organic landscapes held higher territory densities, but nests on organic farms fledged fewer nestlings, translating to a 5 times higher rate of population shrinkage on organic farms compared to conventional. In addition, when parental provisioning behaviour was not restricted by predation risk (i.e., at times of low corvid activity), nestling provisioning rates were higher at lower territory densities, resulting in a much greater increase in nestling mass in low density areas, suggesting that food limitation occurred at high densities. These findings in turn suggest an ecological trap, whereby preferred nesting habitat does not provide sufficient food for rearing nestlings at high population density, creating a population sink. Habitat management for farmland birds should focus not simply on creating a high nesting density, but also on ensuring heterogeneous habitats to provide food resources in close proximity to nesting birds, even if this occurs through potentially restricting overall nest density but increasing population-level breeding success. 相似文献

The chemistry of black seabream Spondyliosoma cantharus otoliths from three main fishery grounds (Olhão, Sagres and Sesimbra) located along c. 400 km of the Portuguese south and west coasts was examined. Element:Ca ratios were determined in whole otoliths and otolith cores of young adult specimens of 2–3 years of age. Using the data from whole otoliths, it was possible to discriminate among S. cantharus from the three fishing grounds with an average accuracy of 91%. Differences among fishing grounds were significant for all element:Ca ratios, and otoliths from Sagres had significantly higher levels of all ratios compared to the other fishing grounds. In contrast, the chemical composition of the otolith core, representative of the larval stage, showed limited variation among the fishing grounds, with an average discrimination accuracy of only 44%, although the Mg:Ca ratio of the otolith cores was also significantly higher for the Sagres samples. The data suggest that larval stages experienced a homogenous environment consistent with an offshore oceanic spawning. Juveniles appeared to display local residency on the inshore fishing grounds, areas probably characterized by greater environmental heterogeneity. Spondyliosoma cantharus population structure is consistent with distinct local population units that share a spawning ground providing recruits to different coastal fishery areas. 相似文献

BackgroundAedes aegypti mosquito-borne viruses including Zika (ZIKV), dengue (DENV), yellow fever (YFV), and chikungunya (CHIKV) have emerged and re-emerged globally, resulting in an elevated burden of human disease. Aedes aegypti is found worldwide in tropical, sub-tropical, and temperate areas. The characterization of mosquito blood meals is essential to understand the transmission dynamics of mosquito-vectored pathogens.Methodology/principal findingsHere, we report Ae. aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus host feeding patterns and arbovirus transmission in Northern Mexico using a metabarcoding-like approach with next-generation deep sequencing technology. A total of 145 Ae. aegypti yielded a blood meal analysis result with 107 (73.8%) for a single vertebrate species and 38 (26.2%) for two or more. Among the single host blood meals for Ae. aegypti, 28.0% were from humans, 54.2% from dogs, 16.8% from cats, and 1.0% from tortoises. Among those with more than one species present, 65.9% were from humans and dogs. For Cx. quinquefasciatus, 388 individuals yielded information with 326 (84%) being from a single host and 63 (16.2%) being from two or more hosts. Of the single species blood meals, 77.9% were from dogs, 6.1% from chickens, 3.1% from house sparrows, 2.4% from humans, while the remaining 10.5% derived from other 12 host species. Among those which had fed on more than one species, 11% were from dogs and humans, and 89% of other host species combinations. Forage ratio analysis revealed dog as the most over-utilized host by Ae. aegypti (= 4.3) and Cx. quinquefasciatus (= 5.6) and the human blood index at 39% and 4%, respectively. A total of 2,941 host-seeking female Ae. aegypti and 3,536 Cx. quinquefasciatus mosquitoes were collected in the surveyed area. Of these, 118 Ae. aegypti pools and 37 Cx. quinquefasciatus pools were screened for seven arboviruses (ZIKV, DENV 1–4, CHIKV, and West Nile virus (WNV)) using qRT-PCR and none were positive (point prevalence = 0%). The 95%-exact upper limit confidence interval was 0.07% and 0.17% for Ae. aegypti and Cx. quinquefasciatus, respectivelyConclusions/significanceThe low human blood feeding rate in Ae. aegypti, high rate of feeding on mammals by Cx. quinquefasciatus, and the potential risk to transmission dynamics of arboviruses in highly urbanized areas of Northern Mexico is discussed. 相似文献
