We studied interactions between microfungi and herbivores sharing a host tree. In a series of experiments and field observations over a 3‐year period, we compared phenotypic and genetic correlations of fungal frequencies and performance of invertebrate herbivores growing on mature half‐sib progenies of mountain birches (Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii) in two environments, a forested river valley and an adjacent higher‐elevation mountain birch woodland. We found little support for direct relation between fungal frequencies and performance of herbivore species. Instead, genetic correlations, particularly between autumnal moth (Epirrita autumnata) and rust fungus (Melampsoridium betulinum), suggest that herbivore performance may be caused by (1) genetic differences in plant quality for fungi and herbivores, or (2) genetic differences in responses to environmental conditions. 相似文献

Perennial crops can deliver a wide range of ecosystem services compared to annual crops. Some of these benefits are achieved by lengthening the growing season, which increases the period of crop water and nutrient uptake, pointing to a potential role for perennial systems to mitigate soil nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. Employing a micrometeorological method, we tested this hypothesis in a 3‐year field experiment with a perennial grass‐legume mixture and an annual corn monoculture. Given that N2O emissions are strongly dependent on the method of fertilizer application, two manure application options commonly used by farmers for each crop were studied: injection vs. broadcast application for the perennial; fall vs. spring application for the annual. Across the 3 years, lower N2O emissions (P < 0.001) were measured for the perennial compared to the annual crop, even though annual N2O emissions increased tenfold for the perennial after ploughing. The percentage of N2O lost per unit of fertilizer applied was 3.7, 3.1 and 1.3 times higher for the annual for each consecutive year. Differences in soil organic matter due to the contrasting root systems of these crops are probably a major factor behind the N2O reduction. We found that a specific manure management practice can lead to increases or reductions in annual N2O emissions depending on environmental variables. The number of freeze‐thaw cycles during winter and the amount of rainfall after fertilization in spring were key factors. Therefore, general manure management recommendations should be avoided because interannual weather variability has the potential to determine if a specific practice is beneficial or detrimental. The lower N2O emissions of perennial crops deserve further research attention and must be considered in future land‐use decisions. Increasing the proportion of perennial crops in agricultural landscapes may provide an overlooked opportunity to regulate N2O emissions. 相似文献

Advances in systemic therapy for colorectal cancer have dramatically improved prognosis. While disease stage has traditionally been the main determinant of disease course, several molecular characteristics of tumor specimens have recently been shown to have prognostic significance. Although to date no molecular characteristics have emerged as consistent predictors of response to therapy, retrospective studies have investigated the role of a variety of biomarkers, including microsatellite instability, loss of heterozygosity of 18q, type II transforming growth factor beta receptor, thymidylate synthase, epidermal growth factor receptor, and Kirsten-ras (KRAS). This paper reviews the current literature, ongoing prospective studies evaluating the role of these markers, and novel techniques such as gene profiling, which may help to uncover the more complex molecular interactions that will predict response to chemotherapy in patients with colorectal cancer. 相似文献

We have investigated the role of human endogenous retroviruses in multiple sclerosis by analyzing the DNA of patients and controls in 4 cohorts for associations between multiple sclerosis and polymorphisms near viral restriction genes or near endogenous retroviral loci with one or more intact or almost-intact genes. We found that SNPs in the gene TRIM5 were inversely correlated with disease. Conversely, SNPs around one retroviral locus, HERV-Fc1, showed a highly significant association with disease. The latter association was limited to a narrow region that contains no other known genes. We conclude that HERV-Fc1 and TRIM5 play a role in the etiology of multiple sclerosis. If these results are confirmed, they point to new modes of treatment for multiple sclerosis. 相似文献

We studied the colour preference of isolated Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and whether previous residence or body size can affect environmental colour choice. In the first phase, a cylindrical tank
was divided into five differently coloured compartments (yellow, blue, green, white and red), a single fish was introduced
into the tank and the frequency at which this fish visited each compartment was recorded over a 2-day study period. An increasingly
larger fish (approx +2 cm in length each time) was then added into the tank on each of days 3, 5 and 7 (=four fish in the
tank by day 7), and the frequency at which each fish visited the different compartments of the tank was observed twice a day
to obtain visit frequency data on the differently sized fishes. This experiment was replicated six times. In the first phase,
the solitary fish established residence inside the yellow compartment on the first and second days. Following the
introduction of a larger fish, the smaller fish was displaced from the occupied compartment. Nile tilapia possibly shows this
preference for yellow as a function of its visual spectral sensitivity and/or the spectral characteristics of its natural
environment. Moreover, body size is an important factor in determining hierarchical dominance and territorial defence, and
dominant fish chose the preferred environmental colour compartment as their territory. 相似文献

Several deciduous woody plant species produce anthocyanins during leaf development in spring and again during leaf senescence
in autumn. The leaves of Betula pendula Roth (silver birch) commonly exhibit transient reddening in juvenile leaves under northern growing conditions, with the intensity
of the red colour varying among individual trees. The objective of our study was to test the hypothesis that the accumulation
of foliar anthocyanins during spring in leaves of B. pendula is an ecotypic response. Chlorophyll fluorescence ratio (Fv/Fm), leaf reflectance and anthocyanin concentrations were measured,
in relation to phenology in spring, summer and autumn from birches used for landscaping with either red or green-emergent
leaves. The results suggest that (1) the trees with green- or red-emergent juvenile leaves represent different populations,
and (2) that the red-emergent leaves senesced earlier, indicating that (3) trees with red-emerging leaves belong to a more
northern ecotype than the trees with green-emerging leaves. The role of anthocyanin synthesis in a northern radiation environment

Aim We investigated the phylogeography, geographical variation in leaf morphology, freezing tolerance and climatic niches of two widespread evergreen sister oak species (Quercus) in the series Virentes. Location South‐eastern USA, Mexico and Central America. Methods Nuclear microsatellites and non‐recombining nuclear and chloroplast DNA sequences were obtained from trees throughout the range of two sister lineages of live oaks, represented by Quercus virginiana in the temperate zone and Q. oleoides in the tropics. Divergence times were estimated for the two major geographical and genetic breaks. Differentiation in leaf morphology, analysed from field specimens, was compared with the molecular data. Freezing sensitivities of Q. virginiana and Q. oleoides populations were assessed in common garden experiments. Results The geographical break between Q. virginiana and Q. oleoides was associated with strong genetic differentiation of possible early Pleistocene origin and with differentiation in freezing sensitivity, climatic envelopes and leaf morphology. A second important geographical and genetic break within Q. oleoides between Costa Rica and the rest of Central America showed a mid‐Pleistocene divergence time and no differentiation in leaf morphology. Population genetic differentiation was greater but genetic diversity was lower within the temperate Q. virginiana than within the tropical Q. oleoides, and genetic breaks largely corresponded to breaks in leaf morphology. Main conclusions Two major breaks, one between Mexico and the USA at the boundary of the two species, and a more recent one within Q. oleoides between Honduras and Costa Rica, implicate climatic changes as potential causes. The latter break may be associated with the formation of the Cordillera de Guanacaste, which was followed by seasonal changes in precipitation. In the former case, an ‘out of the tropics’ scenario is hypothesized, in which the acquisition of freezing tolerance in Q. virginiana permitted colonization of and expansion in the temperate zone, while differences in climatic tolerances between the species limited secondary contact. More pronounced Pleistocene changes in climate and sea level in the south‐eastern USA relative to coastal Mexico and Central America may explain the greater population differentiation within temperate Q. virginiana and greater genetic diversity in tropical Q. oleoides. These patterns are predicted to hold for other taxa that span temperate and tropical zones of North and Central America. 相似文献

Although African suids have been of scientific interest for over two centuries, their origin, evolution, phylogeography and phylogenetic relationships remain contentious. There has been a long‐running debate concerning the evolution of pigs and hogs (Suidae), particularly regarding the phylogenetic relationships among extant Eurasian and African species of the subfamily Suinae. To investigate these issues, we analysed the mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences of extant genera of Suidae from Eurasia and Africa. Molecular phylogenetic analyses revealed that all extant sub‐Saharan African genera form a monophyletic clade separate from Eurasian suid genera, contradicting previous attempts to resolve the Suidae phylogeny. Two major sub‐Saharan African clades were identified, with Hylochoerus and Phacochoerus grouping together as a sister clade to Potamochoerus. In addition, we find that the ancestors of extant African suids may have evolved separately from the ancestors of modern day Sus and Porcula in Eurasia before they colonised Africa. Proper muscle activation is a key feature of survival in different tasks in daily life as well as sports performance, but can be impaired in elderly and in diseases. Therefore it is also clinically important to better understand the phenomenon that can be elucidated in humans non-invasively by positron emission tomography (PET) with measurements of spatial heterogeneity of glucose uptake within and among muscles during exercise. We studied six healthy young men during 35 minutes of cycling at relative intensities of 30% (low), 55% (moderate), and 75% (high) of maximal oxygen consumption on three separate days. Glucose uptake in the quadriceps femoris muscle group (QF), the main force producing muscle group in recreational cycling, and its four individual muscles, was directly measured using PET and 18F-fluoro-deoxy-glucose. Within-muscle heterogeneity was determined by calculating the coefficient of variance (CV) of glucose uptake in PET image voxels within the muscle of interest, and among-muscles heterogeneity of glucose uptake in QF was expressed as CV of the mean glucose uptake values of its separate muscles. With increasing intensity, within-muscle heterogeneity decreased in the entire QF as well as within its all four individual parts. Among-muscles glucose uptake heterogeneity also decreased with increasing intensity. However, mean glucose uptake was consistently lower and heterogeneity higher in rectus femoris muscle that is known to consist of the highest percentage of fast twitch type II fibers, compared to the other three QF muscles. In conclusion, these results show that in addition to increased contribution of distinct muscle parts, with increases in exercise intensity there is also an enhanced recruitment of muscle fibers within all of the four heads of QF, despite established differences in muscle-part specific fiber type distributions. Glucose uptake heterogeneity may serve as a useful non-invasive tool to elucidate muscle activation in aging and diseased populations. 相似文献

The aim of this study was a dosimetrical analysis of the setup used in the exposure of the heads of domestic pigs to GSM-modulated radio frequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) at 900 MHz. The heads of pigs were irradiated with a half wave dipole using three different exposure routines; short bursts of 1-3 s at two different exposure levels and a continuous 10-min exposure. The electroencephalogram (EEG) was registered continuously during the exposures to search for RF-EMF originated changes. The dosimetry was based on simulations with the anatomical heterogeneous numerical model of the pig head. The simulation results were validated by experimental measurements with the exposure dipole and a homogeneous liquid phantom resembling the pig head. The specific absorption rate (SAR), defined as a maximum average over 10 g tissue mass (SAR(10g)), was 7.3 W/kg for the first set of short bursts and 31 W/kg for the second set of short bursts. The SAR(10g) in the continuous 10-min exposure was 31 W/kg. The estimated uncertainty for the dosimetry was +/-25% (K = 2). 相似文献
