The field of biomarkers is a growing one, particularly in osteoarthritis (OA). OA is the most common disabling condition in older persons and a major cause of morbidity. While the debate continues about which of the involved tissues - cartilage, bone or synovium - is the most important in OA aetiology, there is no doubt that the three develop abnormalities in concert; perhaps a truly useful biomarker will reflect just that. While efforts continue to identify reliable biomarkers useful for characterising the status, prognosis and measurement of treatment response in OA, combining existing biomarkers to improve their accuracy looks promising.  相似文献

There is increasing evidence that temperature, in addition to photoperiod, may be an important factor regulating bud dormancy. The impact of temperature during growth cessation, dormancy development, and subsequent cold acclimation was examined in four hybrid poplar clones with contrasting acclimation patterns: ‘Okanese’—EARLY, ‘Walker’—INT1, ‘Katepwa’—INT2, and ‘Prairie Sky’—LATE. Four day–night temperature treatments (13.5/8.5, 18.5/13.5, 23.5/8.5, and 18.5/3.5°C) were applied during a 60-day induction period to reflect current and predicted future annual variation in autumn temperature for Saskatoon, SK. Warm night temperature (18.5/13.5°C) strongly accelerated growth cessation, dormancy development, and cold acclimation in all four clones. Day temperature had the opposite effect of night temperature. Day and night temperatures appeared to act antagonistically against each other during growth cessation and subsequent dormancy development and cold acclimation. Growth cessation, dormancy development, and cold acclimation in EARLY and LATE were less affected by induction temperature than INT1 and INT2 suggesting that genotypic variations exist in response to temperature. Separating specific phenological stages and the impact by temperature on each clone revealed the complexity of fall phenological changes and their interaction with temperature. Most importantly, future changes in temperature may affect time to growth cessation, subsequently altering the depth of dormancy and cold hardiness in hybrid poplar.  相似文献

β-lactam resistance in Gram-negative bacteria is a significant clinical problem in the community, long-term care facilities, and hospitals. In these organisms, β-lactam resistance most commonly results from the production of β-lactamases. In Gram-negative bacilli, TEM-, SHV-, and CTX-M-type β-lactamases predominate. Therefore, new and accurate detection methods for these β-lactamase producing isolates are needed.  相似文献

The unique set of morphological characteristics of the Liang Bua hominins (Homo floresiensis) has been attributed to explanations as diverse as insular dwarfism and pathological microcephaly. This study examined the relationship between cranial size and shape across a range of hominin and African ape species to test whether or not cranial morphology of LB1 is consistent with the basic pattern of static allometry present in these various taxa. Correlations between size and 3D cranial shape were explored using principal components analysis in shape space and in Procrustes form space. Additionally, patterns of static allometry within both modern humans and Plio-Pleistocene hominins were used to simulate the expected cranial shapes of each group at the size of LB1. These hypothetical specimens were compared to LB1 both visually and statistically. Results of most analyses indicated that LB1 best fits predictions for a small specimen of fossil Homo but not for a small modern human. This was especially true for analyses of neurocranial landmarks. Results from the whole cranium were less clear about the specific affinities of LB1, but, importantly, demonstrated that aspects of facial morphology associated with smaller size converge on modern human morphology. This suggests that facial similarities between LB1 and anatomically modern humans may not be indicative of a close relationship. Landmark data collected from this study were also used to test the degree of cranial asymmetry in LB1. These comparisons indicated that the cranium is fairly asymmetrical, but within the range of asymmetry exhibited by modern humans and all extant African ape species. Compared to other fossil specimens, the degree of asymmetry in LB1 is moderate and readily explained by the taphonomic processes to which all fossils are subject. Taken together, these findings suggest that H. floresiensis was most likely the diminutive descendant of a species of archaic Homo, although the details of this evolutionary history remain obscure.  相似文献

The water-insoluble procedures in US Pharmacopeia (USP) General Chapter Residual Solvents <467>, which are based on European Pharmacopoeia procedures, were optimized and modified before their inclusion in the chapter to improve their scope, performance, and ruggedness. The optimized procedures use a static headspace introduction system with a gas chromatograph equipped with a flame ionization detector. This article describes some of the key changes made to the USP published procedures, including use of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) or dimethylformamide (DMF) as the solvent, addition of 5 mL of water and 1 mL of sample (dissolved in DMSO or DMF) to the headspace vial, use of a 3:1 GC split ratio, and use of new matrix-matched system suitability solutions. These procedures were verified with two different active pharmaceutical ingredients—hydroxyzine pamoate and prednisone. In the investigation, the more polar material (hydroxyzine pamoate) showed greater recoveries for the optimized procedures when prepared in DMSO. The less polar material (prednisone) typically had greater recoveries in DMF for the optimized procedures. During experimentation, insights into sample preparation, additional types of headspace instrumentation, solvent purity, and other parameters were also gained.  相似文献

Recruitment success is one of the factors that may be influencing the slow population recovery of Diadema antillarum at many locations in the Caribbean. D. antillarum recruitment was measured with recruitment plates at monthly intervals from September 2005 to September 2006 at three reefs along an inshore-offshore gradient in La Parguera, Puerto Rico. A total of 275 recruits of D. antillarum were collected at the shelf-edge reef during this 13-month study. Two recruits were collected at the mid-shelf reef and no recruits were collected at the inner shelf reef. Recruitment varied among months at the shelf-edge, with the highest value (1,067 ind/m2) occurring in July 2006. Previous benthic surveys in the La Parguera region have demonstrated higher densities of adult D. antillarum at inshore reefs. The higher recruitment at the shelf-edge suggests that recruitment is not a major determinant of the spatial distribution of the adult population. Recruitment occurring in this study is indicative that sources of larvae were available upstream and larval survival was occurring.  相似文献

The isolation and structure of a phytoalexin, malvone A (2-methyl-3-methoxy-5,6-dihydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone) is reported. Malvone A formation is induced in Malva sylvestris L. by the plant pathogen Verticillium dahliae. In a turbimetric assay for toxicity to V. dahliae, it had an ED50 value of 24 microg/ml. The structure of malvone A was determined by MS and NMR spectroscopy, and by X-ray crystallographic analysis. The X-ray analysis showed water molecules were located in channels that run along the a-axis.  相似文献
