Plants can respond to insect herbivory in various ways to avoid reductions in fitness. However, the effect of herbivory on plant performance can vary depending on the seasonal timing of herbivory. We investigated the effects of the seasonal timing of herbivory on the performance of sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata). Sagebrush is known to induce systemic resistance by receiving volatiles emitted from clipped leaves of the same or neighboring plants, which is called volatile communication. Resistance to leaf herbivory is known to be induced most effectively after volatile communication in spring. We experimentally clipped 25 % of leaves of sagebrush in May when leaves were expanding, or in July when inflorescences were forming. We measured the growth and flower production of clipped plants and neighboring plants which were exposed to volatiles emitted from clipped plants. The treatment conducted in spring reduced the growth of clipped plants. This suggests that early season leaf herbivory is detrimental because it reduces the opportunities for resource acquisition after herbivory, resulting in strong induction of resistance in leaves. On the other hand, the late season treatment increased flower production in plants exposed to volatiles, which was caused mainly by the increase in the number of inflorescences. Because the late season treatment occurred when sagebrush produces inflorescences, sagebrush may respond to late herbivory by increasing compensation ability and/or resistance in inflorescences rather than in leaves. Our results suggest that sagebrush can change responses to herbivory and subsequent volatile communication seasonally and that the seasonal variation in responses may reduce the cost of induced resistance. 相似文献

We have successfully reduced populations of economically damaging Pacific mites by introducing another economically unimportant herbivorous mite to grapevines. Although this technique has proven successful in greenhouse and commercial applications, we had a poor understanding of why it worked. Experiments were conducted in a Zinfandel vineyard to assess the relative importance of different forms of competition between these two species and the importance of the timing of the introduction. The early season release of Willamette mites that occurred as shoots were first elongating reduced populations of Pacific mites, indicating that some form of competition occurred in this experiment. However, introductions of Willamette mites 4 weeks later did not reduce populations of Pacific mites. An early season release is essential for control. Control shoots did not receive additions of Willamette mites and had high population densities of Pacific mites. In contrast to this, Pacific mite populations were reduced on treatments with Willamette mites, regardless of whether the two species overlapped spatially or were separated by a barrier. This indicated that physical interference was not responsible, that induced resistance was involved, and that the effect was systemic throughout the shoot. 相似文献

Summary This paper catalogues several different dichotomies that have all been termed r- and K-selection. The status of the concept of r- and K-selection is discussed and a more restricted usage of the terms is recommended. 相似文献

Summary We examined the relationship between flowering phenology, reproductive success (seed production only), and seed head herbivory for 20 similarly sized clones of Erigeron glaucus growing at Bodega Bay Reserve, northern California, USA. Although clones tended to reach peak flowering on the same date, they differed in the proportion of their total flowers produced around that date (flowering synchrony). Clones also differed in the number and density of flower heads presented at any one time to pollinators and herbivores (floral display). Both of these characteristics had consequences for herbivory and plant reproductive success. The proportion of flower heads damaged by insect herbivores was greater for clones that concentrated flowering activity during the main flowering period for the population as a whole (high synchrony) compared to clones that spread flowering out temporally. The primary reason for this result was that clones with low flowering synchrony produced a significant proportion of their flower heads during the fall and therefore, escaped attack by the tephritid fly, Tephritis ovatipennis. Clones with intermediate synchrony had lower seed success (total number of viable seeds produced over the year) than clones with either low or high synchrony. The proportion of flower heads damaged by insect herbivores and number of tephritid flies reared from flower heads were both negatively correlated to floral display while seed head mass and germination rates were positively related to display. Thus, clones which produced dense floral displays were favored both in terms of reduced herbivory and increased successful seed production. 相似文献

Many examples of associational resistance have been reported, in which a plant’s neighbors reduce the rate of damage by herbivores
that it experiences. Despite 30 years of interest and hundreds of examples of associational resistance, we still know very
little about how plants avoid their herbivores. This lack of mechanistic understanding prevents us from predicting when or
where associational resistance will be important or might affect species’ distributions. I demonstrate here that the plant
neighborhoods that surrounded focal mule’s ears (Wyethia mollis) individuals affected the damage they received. In particular, distance between a focal mule’s ears individual and its nearest
sagebrush neighbor (Artemisia tridentata) was a good predictor of how much leaf area the mule’s ears would lose to herbivores over 2 years. Mule’s ears close to sagebrush
suffered less loss than those with more distant nearest sagebrush neighbors. Mule’s ears with near sagebrush neighbors suffered
half the leaf loss as mule’s ears with sagebrush experimentally removed. This associational resistance was probably not caused
by sagebrush attracting or increasing populations of predators of generalist herbivores. Sagebrush is known to emit chemicals
that are feeding deterrents to generalist grasshoppers and these deterrents were probably involved here. Volatile chemicals
emitted by damaged sagebrush have been found to induce resistance in neighboring plants of several species. However, I found
no evidence for such eavesdropping here as mule’s ears gained associational resistance from sagebrush neighbors whether or
not those sagebrush neighbors had been experimentally damaged. Understanding the mechanisms responsible for associational
resistance is critical to predicting where and when it will be important. 相似文献

How leaf domatia and induced plant resistance affect herbivores, natural enemies and plant performance 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Predators and plant resistance may act together to control herbivorous arthropod populations or antagonistically, which would reduce the control of pest populations. In a field experiment we enhanced predation by adding simulated leaf domatia to plants. Leaf domatia are small structures that often harbor predaceous arthropods that are potentially beneficial to the plant. We also manipulated host plant quality by inducing resistance with controlled, early season exposure of seedlings to spider mite herbivory. Our manipulations had profound consequences for the natural community of arthropods that inhabited the plants. Leaf domatia had a direct positive effect on abundances of two species of bugs and one species of thrips, all of which are largely predators of herbivores. On leaves with domatia, each of the predators was found inside the domatia two to three times more often than outside the domatia. Eggs of predaceous bugs inside leaf domatia were protected from parasitism compared to eggs outside the domatia. The positive effects of leaf domatia on predator abundances were associated with reduced populations of herbivorous spider mites, aphids, and whiteflies. Plants with experimental leaf domatia showed significantly enhanced reproductive performance. Induced resistance also affected the community of arthropods. Of the abundant predators, all of which also fed on the plant, only minute pirate bugs were negatively affected by induced resistance. Populations of herbivorous spider mites and whiteflies were directly and negatively affected by induction. In contrast, aphid populations were higher on plants with induced resistance compared to uninduced plants. Effects of induced resistance and domatia were additive for each of the predators and for aphids. However, spider mite and whitefly populations were not suppressed further by employing both induced resistance and domatia compared to each strategy alone. Our manipulations suggest that plant defense strategies can have positive effects on some species and negative effects on others. Negative effects of “resistance traits” on predators and positive effects on some herbivores may reduce the benefits of constitutive expression of resistance traits and may favor inducible defense strategies. Multiple plant strategies such as inducible resistance and morphological traits that aid in the recruitment of predators of herbivores may act together to maximize plant defenses, although they may also be redundant and not act additively. 相似文献

The ecosystem and evolutionary contexts of allelopathy 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Plants can release chemicals into the environment that suppress the growth and establishment of other plants in their vicinity: a process known as 'allelopathy'. However, chemicals with allelopathic functions have other ecological roles, such as plant defense, nutrient chelation, and regulation of soil biota in ways that affect decomposition and soil fertility. These ecosystem-scale roles of allelopathic chemicals can augment, attenuate or modify their community-scale functions. In this review we explore allelopathy in the context of ecosystem properties, and through its role in exotic invasions consider how evolution might affect the intensity and importance of allelopathic interactions. 相似文献

Background
Along with angioplasty, autologus vein grafts are commonly used for artery bypass grafting in patients with advanced arterial stenosis and drug-resistant angina pectoris. Although initially a successful procedure, long-term functionality is limited due to proliferation and migration of smooth muscle cells. Like in atherosclerosis, common chronic infections caused by viruses and bacteria may contribute to this process of vein graft failure. Here we investigated the possible role of Chlamydia pneumoniae (Cpn) in the pathogenesis of venous graft failure in an experimental animal model. In 2 groups (n = 10 rats/group), an epigastric vein-to-common femoral artery interposition graft was placed. Immediately thereafter, rats were infected with Cpn (5*108 IFU) or injected with control solutions. Rats were sacrificed three weeks after surgery and the grafts were harvested for morphometrical and immunohistochemical analysis. 相似文献69.
Models of climate change predict more variable precipitation for much of western North America, including more severe multi-year droughts. Droughts are known to increase mortality to trees although less is known about effects on shrubs from arid environments and about effects on reproduction. In this study, we followed a cohort of young sagebrush plants from 2010 to 2016, a period that included a severe drought from 2012 to 2015. Plants experienced little mortality preceding and during the drought. However, in the year following the drought, 14% of individuals died and 33% of branches on living plants died. There was little flowering in the years preceding the drought and flowering increased in each successive year from 2014 to 2016. Plants that produced more flowers in 2015 had more dead branches in 2016. Larger plants had fewer branches that died. Contrary to expectations, afternoon shade was not associated with greater survival or flowering, perhaps because shaded plants were in proximity to large trees which likely competed for water. Plants of the two common chemotypes had similar rates of survival and flowering. Experimental watering during the summer of 2015 did not affect survival and may have increased flowering in 2016. If multi-year droughts become more common in the future, even drought-adapted shrubs may be expected to suffer high rates of mortality. 相似文献

1.?Ecologists have argued about the commonness and strength of interspecific competition between insect herbivores, but facilitation between herbivores has received much less consideration. We previously found that when two species of folivorous caterpillars co-occurred on a shared host plant, feeding by early season tiger moth caterpillars reduced the growth and reproduction of later season tussock caterpillars. However, densities of tussock caterpillars in summer were positively correlated with densities of tiger moth caterpillars the following spring. 2.?In this study, we experimentally manipulated numbers of feeding tussock caterpillars and found that they facilitated tiger moth caterpillars. 3.?The depth of the litter layer beneath host lupine bushes was positively correlated with the number of tussock caterpillars feeding on each bush. Experimental additions of litter beneath lupine canopies during summer resulted in increased numbers of tiger moth caterpillars in the following spring, indicating a causal role of litter. Litter potentially provides food, habitat and protection from desiccation and predation. We failed to find evidence that tussock caterpillars facilitated tiger moth caterpillars by mechanisms independent of litter. 4.?Our study demonstrates that facilitation may operate between insect herbivores, across life-stages through indirect interactions that are non-trophic. Facilitation operated by a novel mechanism, the accumulation of litter which was a by-product of feeding by one species was valuable to a second species. Facilitation persisted in time and space far beyond the creation of litter by tussock caterpillars which should be considered important ecosystem engineers from the point of view of tiger moths. Facilitations that involve habitat modification may generally connect species that do not interact directly or trophically, and have not previously been considered to affect one another. 相似文献
