Maheshwari, Satish C., and R. N. Kapil. (U. Delhi, Delhi, India.) Morphological and embryological studies on the Lemnaceae. I. The floral structure and gametophytes of Lemna paucicostata. Amer. Jour. Bot. 50(7): 677–686. Illus. 1963.—In Lemna paucicostata, a locally occurring member of the Lemnaceae, the plant body is represented by a frond which is devoid of lignified elements. The root shows a winged root sheath but does not have root hairs. There are no distinctive layers like the endodermis and xylem. The male archesporium is hypodermal and differentiates normally as in other angiosperms into parietal and sporogenous layers. The tapetum is single-layered and plasmodial. The partition walls of the anther are not derived by sterilization of the sporogenous cells as believed earlier. The microspore tetrads are isobilateral and decussate, the meiotic divisions being successive. The pollen grains are shed at the 3-celled stage. The ovary contains a single hemianatropous, bitegminal and crassinucellar ovule. The development of the embryo sac conforms to the Allium type.  相似文献

Summary The susceptibility of 50 drug resistant strains of Escherichia coli of human gut was determined against ciprofloxacin, acridine orange (AO) and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS). Curing efficacy of these agents were worked out at subminimal inhibitory concentrations. Ciprofloaxacin was found a better curing agent for E coli R-plasmids, eliminating R-factors from 48% of the strains followed by SDS and AO which eliminated 24% and 20% of the drug resistance determinants, respectively. Elimination of R-plasmids was found dependent on the concentrations of curing agents and nature of R-plasmids.  相似文献

Shoot buds of ginger were successfully encapsulated in 4% sodium alginate gel. Encapsulated buds were germinated in vitro to form roots and shoots. In vitro germination (emergence of sprouts) of encapsulated buds ranged from 16.7% to 81.8% on different media after 5 weeks of incubation. Normal plantlets with an average shoot length of 2.3 cm and 1.7 cm root length were successfully transplanted into unsterilized soil without any hardening process. These plantlets showed no symptoms of ginger yellows disease and the causal fungal pathogen failed to grow out on culture media (used as a diagnostic test).  相似文献

Summary Mass cultivation of Spirulina for commercial application suffers from poor productivity when measured against laboratory results or theoretical projections. Wider applications of algal products require that this gap be reduced. Addition of eucalyptus kraft black liquor at a maximum of 0.1% to Spirulina cultures enhanced biomass productivity by at least 40%. The factors enhancing Spirulina biomass productivity were insoluble at low pH, of low molecular mass and stable to high temperature. Single addition of kraft black liquor in outdoor continuous cultures afforded sustained enhancement in biomass productivity for at least eight weeks.  相似文献

Wheat spikelets detached from the spike at anthesis were cultured on solidified media and successfully produced mature grains. These grains resembled normal grains and contained well-developed, embryos. Lower concentrations of glutamine favored dry weight increase in developing grains. Such grains were indistinguishable from grains from greenhouse-grown plants in germination on moist blotting sheets. The technique of individual spikelet culture can be used to study physiology and development of wheat grains and kernels and to study host-pathogen interactions in wheat floret diseases such as Karnal bunt.  相似文献

Microsomal glucose-6-phosphatase from rat liver is activated by phosphatidylcholine but inhibited by lysophosphatidylcholine. Inhibition occurs not by membrane lysis but in an intact bilayer; it is reversible; and it is overcome by addition of cholesterol but not if the cholesterol-hydroxyl group is blocked. An analog of lysophosphatidylcholine deprived of hydrogen bonding sites, 1-ether-2- deoxylysophosphatidylcholine , is a partial activator, and its effect on the enzyme in a phosphatidylcholine bilayer is not modulated by cholesterol. It appears to be one of the functions of cholesterol to buffer the lysophospholipids in membranes by complexing with them through hydrogen bonding in the hydrogen belt region. Lysophosphatidylcholine/cholesterol association is favored over phosphatidylcholine/cholesterol association.  相似文献

Conformational changes in ovalbumin, a globular protein, induced by an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), have been monitored by an FT-IR spectrometer using ZnSe cylindrical internal reflection optics which allows high quality IR spectra to be obtained in water solution. The most notable change, on addition of SDS, occurs in the composite band of the Amide I absorption band and the vibrational frequency of the composite C = O bond shifts from 1639 cm-1 to 1652 cm-1. On the other hand, the position of the Amide II band remains fairly unchanged. Comparison of the various peak positions in the deconvoluted spectra for the native protein and the perturbed protein clearly shows the effect of SDS on the secondary structures of the protein. SDS unfolds the protein. It increases the helix content slightly. More importantly, it alerts the beta sheet structure, destroying it almost completely in the Amide I region, while retaining it in its neighbourhood. In the deconvoluted spectra of the perturbed protein, a band at 1531 cm-1 indicates generation of some beta turns. We used the second derivative of the deconvoluted spectra for fixing positions of minor peaks and shoulders. The results of this study indicate that the deconvolution of the normal IR spectra, consisting of composite bands, provides evidence for the specific secondary structures in a protein and for the way they are affected by changes in the environment, e.g., the addition of SDS. This makes it possible to relate conformational changes to specific secondary structures.  相似文献
