We assembled information on the contribution and value of forests to world food security. An assessment was made of the role of forests and non-timber products in the food system of developing countries. We estimated that upwards of 300 million people annually earn part or all of their livelihood and food from forests. A total of about $90 billion in non-timber products are harvested each year. Forests also help to protect land, water, and biological resources, and they play an important role in maintaining the productivity of agricultural and environmental systems.  相似文献

Morphological studies of 16 strains belonging to the genus Monomorphina revealed a single, parietal, orbicular chloroplast in their cells. The chloroplast has a tendency to be perforated and disintegrates in aging populations and thus may appear to be many chloroplasts under the light microscope. A single chloroplast in the cells of Cryptoglena skujae is also parietally located and highly perforated. It never forms a globular and closed structure, but is open from the side of the furrow, resembling the letter C. We have verified the Monomorphina pyrum group (M. pyrum–like) on the basis of phylogenetic analysis of SSU rDNA and morphological data. The strain CCAC 0093 (misidentified as M. reeuwykiana) diverges first on the SSU rDNA phylogenetic tree. The rest of the M. pyrum–like strains form a tight cluster, subdivided into several smaller ones. Because morphological differences between the M. pyrum–like strains (including the strain CCAC 0093) do not conform to the tree topology, we suggest that they all (except the strain CCAC 0093) belong to M. pyrum. We designate a new species, M. pseudopyrum, for the strain CCAC 0093, solely on the basis of molecular characters. We also suggest that M. reeuwykiana and similar species should stay in Phacus and Lepocinclis unless detailed molecular and morphological studies show otherwise. Emended diagnoses of the genera Monomorphina and Cryptoglena and the species M. aenigmatica are also proposed, as well as the delimitation of an epitype for M. pyrum, the type species for the genus Monomorphina.  相似文献

The freshwater bryozoan Pectinatella magnifica (Leidy, 1851) is an invasive species in many countries all over the world. Although native to North America, it has been found in many countries of Europe and Asia. Pectinatella magnifica forms the largest colonial masses from all recently known bryozoan species. Culturing this organism in an aquarium has never been achieved for more than few days so far. Colonies from laboratory culture are important for various studies on its biology and life cycle of this species in experimental conditions. Young colonies successfully hatched from germinating statoblasts of P. magnifica in the laboratory and were maintained over eight weeks. Moreover, this was the first time when the compound colonies of this species were carried from its natural habitat to the laboratory, into a special aquarium system, and kept alive for more than three weeks. In both experiments the physicochemical parameters of the water (temperature, concentration of dissolved oxygen, electrolytic conductivity and pH) and changes in weight of compound colonies of P. magnifica in laboratory conditions were checked. The results found in this study are essential for understanding the invasiveness of this species and identifying methods for elimination of its ecological risks because these are closely resembling those of other invasive species.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the potential for biosynthesis of propionic acid and vitamin B12 by Propionibacterium freudenreichii T82 in a medium containing various sources of carbon (glucose, fructose, and saccharose). These sugars are present in apple pomaces, which are the waste from the production of apple juice. Using statistical analysis design of experiments (DoE), the results allowed us to determine which sugars (carbon sources) exert the most beneficial influence on the biosynthesis of propionic acid and cobalamin. The highest production of propionic acid by the tested bacterial strain was obtained in a medium in which glucose accounted for at least 50% of the available carbon sources. Depending on the culture medium, the concentration of this metabolite ranged from 23 to 40 g/L. P. freudenreichii T82 produced the smallest amount of acid in medium in which the dominant nutrient source was saccharose. The results obtained indicated an inverse relationship between the amount of acid produced by the bacteria and vitamin B12 biosynthesis. Because of the high efficiency of propionic acid biosynthesis by P. freudenreichii T82, the prospect of using this strain to obtain propionate with the simultaneous disposal of waste materials (such as apple pomaces) which contain glucose and/or fructose is very promising.  相似文献

Dynamic rearrangements of the actin cytoskeleton power cell motility in contexts ranging from intracellular microbial pathogenesis to axon guidance. The Ena/VASP family proteins-Mena, VASP, and Evl-are believed to control cell motility by serving as a direct link between signaling events and the actin cytoskeleton. It has previously been reported that a novel miniature protein, pGolemi, binds with high affinity to the EVH1 domain of Mena (Mena1-112) but not to those of VASP (VASP1-115) or Evl (Evl1-115) and also causes an unusual defect in actin-driven Listeria monocytogenes motility. Here, scanning mutagenesis was used to examine the effects of single amino acid changes within pGolemi on EVH1 domain affinity and specificity, miniature protein secondary structure, and L. monocytogenes motility. The data suggest that pGolemi contains the expected aPP-like fold and binds Mena1-112 in a manner highly analogous to the proline-rich repeat region of L. monocytogenes ActA protein. Residues throughout pGolemi contribute to both EVH1 domain affinity and paralog specificity. Moreover, the affinities of pGolemi variants for Mena1-112 correlate with selectivity against the EVH1 domains of VASP and Evl. In L. monocytogenes motility assays, speed and speed variability correlate strongly with EVH1 paralog specificity, suggesting that the Ena/VASP paralogs do not play equivalent roles in the process of L. monocytogenes actin tail maturation.  相似文献

It has been suggested that the alanine-based peptide with sequence Ac-XX-[A](7)-OO-NH(2), termed XAO where X denotes diaminobutyric acid and O denotes ornithine, exists in a predominantly polyproline-helix (P(II)) conformation in aqueous solution. In our recent work, we demonstrated that this "polyproline conformation" should be regarded as a set of local conformational states rather than as the overall conformation of the molecule. In this work, we present further evidence to support this statement. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements showed only a very small peak in the heat capacity of an aqueous solution of XAO at 57 degrees C, whereas the suggested transition to the P(II) structure should occur at approximately 30 degrees C. We also demonstrate that the temperature dependence of the (3)J(HNHalpha) coupling constants of the alanine residues can be explained qualitatively in terms of Boltzmann averaging over all local conformational states; therefore, this temperature dependence proves that a conformational transition does not occur. Canonical MD simulations with the solvent represented by the generalized Born model, and with time-averaged NMR-derived restraints, demonstrate the presence of an ensemble of structures with a substantial amount of local P(II) conformational states but not with an overall P(II) conformation.  相似文献
