Vision is a major sense for Primates and the ability to perceive colors has great importance for the species ecology and behavior. Visual processing begins with the activation of the visual opsins in the retina, and the spectral absorption peaks are highly variable among species. In most Primates, LWS/MWS opsins are responsible for sensitivity to long/middle wavelengths within the visible light spectrum, and SWS1 opsins provide sensitivity to short wavelengths, in the violet region of the spectrum. In this study, we aimed to investigate the genetic variation on the sws1 opsin gene of New World monkeys (NWM) and search for amino acid substitutions that might be associated with the different color vision phenotypes described for a few species. We sequenced the exon 1 of the sws1 opsin gene of seven species from the families Callitrichidae, Cebidae, and Atelidae, and searched for variation at the spectral tuning sites 46, 49, 52, 86, 90, 93, 114, 116, and 118. Among the known spectral tuning sites, only residue 114 was variable. To investigate whether other residues have a functional role in the SWS1 absorption peak, we performed computational modeling of wild-type SWS1 and mutants A50I and A50V, found naturally among the species investigated. Although in silico analysis did not show any visible effect caused by these substitutions, it is possible that interactions of residue 50 with other sites might have some effect in the spectral shifts in the order of ~14 nm, found among the NWM. We also performed phylogenetic reconstruction of the sws1 gene, which partially recovered the species phylogeny. Further studies will be important to uncover the mutations responsible for the phenotypic variability of the SWS1 of NWM, and how spectral tuning may be associated with specific ecological features such as preferred food items and habitat use. 相似文献

Calorie restriction (CR) without malnutrition slows aging in animal models. Oxidative stress reduction was proposed to mediate CR effects. CR effect on urinary F2‐isoprostanes, validated oxidative stress markers, was assessed in CALERIE, a two‐year randomized controlled trial. Healthy volunteers (n = 218) were randomized to prescribed 25% CR (n = 143) or ad libitum control (AL, n = 75) stratifying the randomization schedule by site, sex, and BMI. F2‐isoprostanes were quantified using LC‐MS/MS in morning, fasted urine specimens at baseline, at 12 and 24 months. The primary measure of oxidative status was creatinine‐adjusted 2,3‐dinor‐iPF(2α)‐III concentration, additional measured included iPF(2α)‐III, iPF2a‐VI, and 8,12‐iso‐iPF2a‐VI. Intention‐to‐treat analyses assessed change in 2,3‐dinor‐iPF(2α)‐III using mixed models assessing treatment, time, and treatment‐by‐time interaction effects, adjusted for blocking variables and baseline F2‐isoprostane value. Exploratory analyses examined changes in iPF(2α)‐III, iPF(2α)‐VI, and 8,12‐iso‐iPF(2α)‐VI. A factor analysis used aggregate information on F2‐isoprostane values. In CR group, 2,3‐dinor‐iPF(2α)‐III concentrations were reduced from baseline by 17% and 13% at 12 and 24 months, respectively; these changes were significantly different from AL group (p < .01). CR reduced iPF(2α)‐III concentrations by 20% and 27% at 12 and 24 months, respectively (p < .05). The effects were weaker on the VI‐species. CR caused statistically significant reduction in isoprostane factor at both time points, and mean (se) changes were ?0.36 (0.06) and ?0.31 (0.06). No significant changes in isoprostane factor were at either time point in AL group (p < .01 between‐group difference). We conclude that two‐year CR intervention in healthy, nonobese men and women reduced whole body oxidative stress as assessed by urinary concentrations of F2‐isoprostanes. 相似文献

Human population growth around protected areas increases the contact between wild and domestic animals, promoting disease transmission between them. This study investigates the exposure of free-ranging wild carnivores and domestic dogs to canine distemper virus (CDV) and parvovirus in Emas National Park (ENP) in the Cerrado savanna of central Brazil. Serum samples were collected from 169 wild carnivores, including the maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus), crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous), hoary fox (Pseudalopex vetulus), puma (Puma concolor), ocelot (Leopardus pardalis), pampas cat (Leopardus colocolo), jaguarundi (Herpailurus yagouaroundi), striped hog-nosed skunk (Conepatus semistriatus) and coati (Nasua nasua), and from 35 domestic dogs living on rural properties bordering ENP. Serological tests showed that 10.6% of wild carnivores (maned wolves, crab-eating foxes and ocelots) and 71.4% of domestic dogs were exposed to CDV, and 56.8% of wild carnivores, including all species sampled except coatis, and 57.1% of domestic dogs were exposed to parvovirus. This report is the first to indicate that the free-ranging pampas cat, jaguarundi and striped hog-nosed skunk are exposed to parvovirus. CDV and parvovirus deserve attention in ENP, and it is extremely important to monitor the health of carnivore populations and perform molecular diagnosis of the viruses to determine the possible involvement of the domestic dog in their transmission. 相似文献

Contemporary biological cells are sophisticated and highly compartmentalized. Compartmentalization is an essential principle of prebiotic life as well as a key feature in bottom‐up synthetic biology research. In this review, the dynamic growth of compartments as an essential prerequisite for enabling self‐reproduction as a fundamental life process is discussed. The micrometer‐sized compartments are focused on due to their cellular dimensions. Two types of compartments are considered, membraneless droplets and membrane‐bound microcompartments. Growth mechanisms of aqueous droplets such as protein (condensates) or macromolecule‐rich droplets (aqueous two phase systems) and coacervates are discussed, for which growth occurs via Ostwald ripening or coalescence. For membrane‐bound compartments, vesicles are considered, which are composed of fatty acids, lipids, or polymers, where directed growth can occur via fusion or uptake of material from the surrounding. The development of novel approaches for growth of biomimetic microcompartments can eventually be utilized to construct new synthetic cells. 相似文献

Perceptual anomalies in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have been attributed to an imbalance in weighting incoming sensory evidence with prior knowledge when interpreting sensory information. Here, we show that sensory encoding and how it adapts to changing stimulus statistics during feedback also characteristically differs between neurotypical and ASD groups. In a visual orientation estimation task, we extracted the accuracy of sensory encoding from psychophysical data by using an information theoretic measure. Initially, sensory representations in both groups reflected the statistics of visual orientations in natural scenes, but encoding capacity was overall lower in the ASD group. Exposure to an artificial (i.e., uniform) distribution of visual orientations coupled with performance feedback altered the sensory representations of the neurotypical group toward the novel experimental statistics, while also increasing their total encoding capacity. In contrast, neither total encoding capacity nor its allocation significantly changed in the ASD group. Across both groups, the degree of adaptation was correlated with participants’ initial encoding capacity. These findings highlight substantial deficits in sensory encoding—independent from and potentially in addition to deficits in decoding—in individuals with ASD.It is increasingly recognized that individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) show anomalies in perception, and these have been recently attributed to altered decoding (i.e. interpretation of sensory signals). This study reveals that independent of these changes, individuals with ASD show upstream deficits in sensory encoding (i.e., how samples are drawn from the environment). 相似文献
