The eutrophicated Enäjärvi was studied by paleolimnological analyses and sediment mapping. The sedimentary record indicates that the lake nutrient balance had deteriorated due to lowering of the lake water level in the year 1928. From that event onwards Chironomus plumosus and Cyclotella astraea characterize the chironomid and diatom communities. The concentrations of sedimentary total and mobile phosphorus show that since then the internal load of phosphorus has controlled the nutrient cycle of the lake. The areal distribution of mobile phosphorus can be explained by dominant wind directions and wind resuspension of the sediment is the key factor in the nutrient cycle. Restoration of Enäjärvi must be based on actions which stabilize the surface sediment and improve its natural phosphorus-binding capacity. They include the regulation of lake water to as high a level as possible and the removal of the majority of roach.  相似文献

Bile acids play multiple roles in the physiology of vertebrates; they facilitate lipid absorption, serve as signaling molecules to control carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, and provide a disposal route for cholesterol. Unexpectedly, the α-methylacyl-CoA racemase (Amacr) deficient mice, which are unable to complete the peroxisomal cleavage of C27-precursors to the mature C24-bile acids, are physiologically asymptomatic when maintained on a standard laboratory diet. The aim of this study was to uncover the underlying adaptive mechanism with special reference to cholesterol and bile acid metabolism that allows these mice to have a normal life span. Intestinal cholesterol absorption in Amacr −/− mice is decreased resulting in a 2-fold increase in daily cholesterol excretion. Also fecal excretion of bile acids (mainly C27-sterols) is enhanced 3-fold. However, the body cholesterol pool remains unchanged, although Amacr-deficiency accelerates hepatic sterol synthesis 5-fold. Changes in lipoprotein profiles are mainly due to decreased phospholipid transfer protein activity. Thus Amacr-deficient mice provide a unique example of metabolic regulation, which allows them to have a normal lifespan in spite of the disruption of a major metabolic pathway. This metabolic adjustment can be mainly explained by setting cholesterol and bile acid metabolism to a new balanced level in the Amacr-deficient mouse.  相似文献

We analyzed a lacustrine sediment core covering the Holocene from Lake Einstaken, Nordaustlandet, for its fossil Cladocera (Crustacea) with an aim to reconstruct past aquatic communities in this environmentally extreme and unexplored region. In the analysis, we encountered remains (carapaces, ephippia, headshields, and postabdomens) of an unknown chydorid (Chydoridae, Aloninae) species during two separate periods in the early Holocene. The remains had some comparable morphological characters with the European Alona guttata s.str. Sars, 1862 and with the glacial relict Alona werestschagini Sinev, 1999, but they differed clearly from the previous species; the headshield had broadly rounded rostrum and narrow fornices, the ephippium was heavily pigmented and reticulated, and the postabdomen had convex dorsal and ventral margins. The postabdomen had evidently similar morphology with Alona bergi R?en, 1992, which has been described, although inadequately, from arctic Canada and northern Greenland. We conclude, based on the morphology of the postabdomen, that the unknown remains belong to species closely resembling A. bergi, named here Alona cf. bergi, and assume that the species, whether the true A. bergi or some other cryptic species of the A. guttata group, is a postglacial relict of the high arctic adapted to cold climate. Herewith, we emphasize the need for extensive biogeographical investigations into both fossil and intact specimens of chydorids in the arctic.  相似文献

The locus (IP2) for the hereditary form of incontinentia pigmenti (IP) has been mapped to Xq28 by linkage analysis. We studied three IP families with polymorphic markers in the Xq28 region. In two families we observed recombination between the marker loci and IP. In the third family no crossing overs were seen and linkage to the Xq28 region could not be excluded. The other IP locus (IP1) has been mapped to Xp 11.21, because of sporadic cases of IP with X-chromosomal alterations involving Xp11.21. To check whether this locus is linked to IP in these families, we used polymorphic markers in the Xp11 region. In all three families recombinations were observed, thus excluding linkage to this locus in these IP families.  相似文献

Our objective was to explore whether the radiation fallout in Finland after the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in April 1986 led to an increased incidence of trisomy 21. In this geographic and temporal cohort study, the country was divided into three zones according to the amounts of radioactive fallout and internal radiation caused by two cesium isotopes. The 518 cytologically verified cases of trisomy 21 were divided into a control group (conceived before the accident), and a study group of children whose expected dates of birth were in the post-accident years 1987-1988, i.e., pregnancies commenced after May 1986. The cases were also divided into three subgroups according to the zones of radiation. There were no significant differences in prevalence of trisomy 21 between the control and study groups nor between the three zones in spite of the significant differences in the levels of radiation and in the body burden that prevailed throughout the study period. Power estimates showed that in the two zones of lower radiation, an increase of 0.5% in the prevalence would have been detected with a power of 0.85, and in the somewhat smaller zone of the highest radiation, with a power of 0.70. The study lends no further support to the view that the low radiation fallout in western Europe would have been causally associated with trisomy 21.  相似文献

The plasma concentration of human lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is correlated with the risk of heart disease. A distinct feature of the Lp(a) particle is the apolipoprotein (a) [apo(a)], which is associated with apoB-100, the main protein component of low-density lipoprotein. We now report that apo(a), which has extensive homology to plasminogen, binds to immobilized fibronectin. The binding of Lp(a) was localized to the C-terminal heparin-binding domain of fibronectin. Incubation of Lp(a) with fibronectin resulted in fragmentation of fibronectin. The cleavage pattern, as visualized by gel electrophoresis and immunoblotting, was reproducibly obtained with Lp(a) purified from five different individuals and was distinct from that obtained upon proteolysis of fibronectin by plasmin or kallikrein. The use of synthetic peptide substrates demonstrated that the amino acid specificity for Lp(a) was arginine rather than lysine. The proteolytic activity of Lp(a) was localized to apo(a) and experiments with inhibitors indicated that the proteolytic activity was of serine proteinase-type.  相似文献

The respiration of plankton of two polyhumic lakes was measured as production of carbon dioxide in dark bottles. The method proved to be enough sensitive for use in oligotrophic lakes with low alkalinity. The respiration of plankton followed broadly changes in temperature. However, the primary production of phytoplankton was probably the main factor governing the seasonal pattern of respiration. During summer the respiration of plankton was more than three times higher than the primary production of phytoplankton. This suggests that allochthonous humic substances are an important source of carbon and energy for organisms of polyhumic lakes.  相似文献

Alternative cropping practices can be expected to increase the diversity and change the species composition of weed communities. In a six-year field experiment we compared species diversity and species composition in the weed community of cereal fields cultivated by conventional and by low-input cropping methods. In the conventional cropping both mineral fertilizers and herbicides were applied but in the low-input cropping the fertlizer was manure and herbicides were avoided altogether. The level of nitrogen fertilization was higher in conventional cropping. A five-year crop rotation comprising rye, oat-pea, barley and two-year grasslands was used in both cropping methods. We found that the species pool was larger (42 vs 35 species) and the average number of species higher (20.2 vs 13.1 species) in low-input than in conventional cropping. This was the case both in the data pooled across crops and in each crop separately. Herbicides affected species diversity and species composition more than did nitrogen fertilization. Species susceptible to the herbicides applied declined in abundance, which resulted in more skewed dominance patterns in the communities of conventional fields than in those of low-input fields. The crop affected the species composition of weed communities more than did the cropping method. Our results suggest that weed species diversity could be promoted by using low-intensity cropping practices.  相似文献

In situ enclosure experiments were performed in a highly humic lake to examine the effects of acidification on phyto-, bacterio- and zooplankton. The acidity of three enclosures was adjusted with H2SO4 to pH 3.5, 4 and 5 and one enclosure and the lake served as controls. The diversity of plankton as well as the mean concentration of chlorophyll α, primary production and respiration of plankton decreased with increasing acidity. Bacterial density was slightly lower in the pH 3.5 enclosure than in the other enclosures and in the lake, but there were no differences in the morphological type or mean volume of the cells between different treatments. In the acidified enclosures Cryptomonas ovata and Chlamydomonas spp. were the dominant phytoplankters, while Dinobryon and Mallomonas species seemed to be most sensitive to acidity. Keratella cochlearis, Kellicottia longispina and Bosmina longispina were the most tolerant zooplankton to acidity.  相似文献
