Objective: The aim of this study was to re‐evaluate data about oral status, mastication and nutrition in elderly men in Malmö, Sweden, recorded in 1985–1987, to assess associations between inadequate dietary habits, oral conditions and masticatory function. Materials and methods: Four hundred and eighty‐one men, aged 67–68, participated in a comprehensive health examination, including tooth and denture status and masticatory tests. A separate study of dietary habits and nutritional status was made. Ninety‐five men had inadequate dietary habits. The databases of dental/denture status, mastication, nutritional status and social network factors were re‐evaluated for assessment of associations. Results: No significant differences between those with adequate or inadequate nutrition were found with regard to the number of teeth, occlusal contacts or removable dentures. Also self‐assessed chewing did not show any differences. Conclusion: Inadequate dietary habits were independent of teeth and denture status. Some correlations to social network conditions could be identified. Overweight, obesity, low physical activity and high alcohol intake were more common among those with inadequate nutritional intake.  相似文献

While biodiversity loss continues globally, assessments of regional and local change over time have been equivocal. Here, we assess changes in plant species richness and beta diversity over 140 years at the level of regions within a country. Using 19th‐century flora censuses for 14 Danish regions as a baseline, we overcome previous criticisms concerning short time series and neglect of completely altered habitats. We find that species composition has changed dramatically and directionally across all regions. Substantial species losses were more than offset by large gains, resulting in a net increase in species richness in all regions. The occupancy of initially widespread species increased, while initially rare species lost terrain. These changes were accompanied by strong biotic homogenization; i.e. regions are more similar now than they were 140 years ago. Species declining in Denmark were found to be in similar decline all over Northern Europe.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to investigate if cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers of neurodegeneration are associated with cognition in bipolar disorder and healthy controls, respectively. CSF concentrations of total and phosphorylated tau, amyloid beta (Aβ)1-42, ratios of Aβ42/40 and Aβ42/38, soluble amyloid precursor protein α and β, and neurofilament light chain protein were analyzed in relation to neuropsychological performance in 82 euthymic bipolar disorder patients and 71 healthy controls. Linear regression models were applied to account for performance in five cognitive domains using the CSF biomarkers. In patients, the CSF biomarkers explained a significant proportion of the variance (15–36%, p=.002 - <.0005) in all cognitive domains independently of age, medication, disease status, and bipolar subtype I or II. However, the CSF biomarkers specifically mirroring Alzheimer-type brain changes, i.e., P-tau and Aβ1-42, did not contribute significantly. In healthy controls, CSF biomarkers did not explain the variance in cognitive performance. Selected CSF biomarkers of neurodegenerative processes accounted for cognitive performance in persons with bipolar disorder, but not for healthy controls. Specifically, the ratios of Aβ42/40 and Aβ42/38 were consistently associated with altered cognitive performance.  相似文献

ABSTRACT We tested whether pelagic light and nutrient availability, metabolism, organic pools and CO2-supersaturation were related to lake size and surrounding forest cover in late summer–autumn measurements among 64 small (0.02–20 ha), shallow seepage lakes located in nutrient-rich, calcareous moraine soils in North Zealand, Denmark. We found a strong implicit scaling to lake size as light availability increased significantly with lake size while nutrient availability, phytoplankton biomass and dissolved organic matter declined. Forest lakes had significantly stronger net heterotrophic traits than open lakes as higher values were observed for light attenuation above and in the water, dissolved organic matter, pelagic community respiration (R) relative to maximum gross primary production (R/GPP) and CO2-supersaturation. Total-phosphorus was the main predictor of phytoplankton biomass (Chl) despite a much weaker relationship than observed in previous studies of larger lakes. Maximum gross primary production increased with algal biomass and decreased with dissolved organic matter, whereas community respiration increased with dissolved organic matter and particularly with gross primary production. These results suggest that exogenous organic matter supplements primary production as an energy source to heterotrophs in these small lakes, and particularly so in forest lakes experiencing substantial shading from the forest and dissolved humic material. This suggestion is supported by 20–30-fold CO2 supersaturation in the surface water of the smallest forest lakes and more than sixfold supersaturation in 75% of all measurements making these lakes among the most supersaturated temperate lakes examined so far.  相似文献

The aggregation of β‐amyloid peptide 42 results in the formation of toxic oligomers and plaques, which plays a pivotal role in Alzheimer''s disease pathogenesis. Aβ42 is one of several Aβ peptides, all of Aβ30 to Aβ43 that are produced as a result of γ‐secretase–mediated regulated intramembrane proteolysis of the amyloid precursor protein. γ‐Secretase modulators (GSMs) represent a promising class of Aβ42‐lowering anti‐amyloidogenic compounds for the treatment of AD. Gamma‐secretase modulators change the relative proportion of secreted Aβ peptides, while sparing the γ‐secretase–mediated processing event resulting in the release of the cytoplasmic APP intracellular domain. In this study, we have characterized how GSMs affect the γ‐secretase cleavage of three γ‐secretase substrates, E‐cadherin, ephrin type A receptor 4 (EphA4) and ephrin type B receptor 2 (EphB2), which all are implicated in important contexts of cell signalling. By using a reporter gene assay, we demonstrate that the γ‐secretase–dependent generation of EphA4 and EphB2 intracellular domains is unaffected by GSMs. We also show that γ‐secretase processing of EphA4 and EphB2 results in the release of several Aβ‐like peptides, but that only the production of Aβ‐like proteins from EphA4 is modulated by GSMs, but with an order of magnitude lower potency as compared to Aβ modulation. Collectively, these results suggest that GSMs are selective for γ‐secretase–mediated Aβ production.  相似文献

Velocity gradients and turbulence around macrophyte stands in streams   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
1. Submerged macrophytes strongly modify water flow in small lowland streams. The present study investigated turbulence and vertical velocity gradients using small hot-wire anemometers in the vicinity and within the canopies of four macrophyte species with the objective of evaluating: (a) how plant canopies influence velocity gradients and shear force on the surfaces of the plants and the stream bed; and (b) how the presence and morphology of plants influence the intensity of turbulence. 2. Water velocity was often relatively constant with water depth both outside and inside the plant canopies, but the velocity declined steeply immediately above the unvegetated stream bed. Steep vertical velocity profiles were also observed in the transition to the surface of the macrophyte canopy of three of the plant species forming a dense shielding structure of high biomass. Less steep vertical profiles were observed at the open canopy surface of the fourth plant species, growing from a basal meristem and having the biomass more homogeneously distributed with depth. The complex distribution of hydraulic roughness between the stream bed, the banks and the plants resulted in velocity profiles which often fitted better to a linear than to a logarithmic function of distance above the sediment and canopy surfaces. 3. Turbulence increased in proportion to the mean flow velocity, but the slope of the relationships differed in a predictable manner among positions outside and inside the canopies of the different species, suggesting that their morphology and movements influenced the intensity of turbulence. Turbulence was maintained in the attenuated flow inside the plant canopies, despite estimates of low Reynolds numbers, demonstrating that reliable evaluation of flow patterns requires direct measurements. The mean velocity inside plant canopies mostly exceeded 2 cm s??1 and turbulence intensity remained above 0.2 cm s??1, which should be sufficient to prevent carbon limitation of photosynthesis in CO2-rich streams, while plant growth may benefit from the reduced physical disturbance and the retention of nutrient-rich sediment particles. 4. Flow patterns were highly reproducible within canopies of the individual species despite differences in stand size and location among streams. We propose that individual plant stands are suitable functional units for analysing the influence of submerged macrophytes on flow patterns, retention of particles and biological communities in lowland streams.  相似文献

Summary In order to study and control fermentation processes, indirect on-line measurements and mathematical models can be used. Here an on-line model for fermentation processes is presented. The model is based on atom and partial mass balances as well as on stability equations for the protolytes. The model is given an adaptive form by including transport equations for mass transfer and expressions for the fermentation kinetics. The state of the process can be estimated on-line using the balance component of the model completed with measurement equations for the input and the output flows of the process. Adaptivity is realized by means of on-line estimation of the parameters in the transport and kinetic expressions using recursive regression analysis. On-line estimation of the kinetic and mass transfer parameters makes model-based predictions possible and enables intelligent process control while facilitating testing of the validity of the measurement variables. A practical MS-Windows 3.1 model implementation called FMMS—Fermentation Monitoring and Modeling System is shown. The system makes it easy to configure the operating conditions for a run. It uses Windows dialogs for all set-ups, model configuration parameters, elemental compositions, on-line measurement devices and signal conditioning. Advanced on-line data analysis makes it possible to plot variables against each other for easy comparison. FMMS keeps track of over 100 variables per run. These variables are either measured or estimated by the model. Assay results can also be entered and plotted during fermentation. Thus the model can be verified almost instantly. Historical fermentation runs can be re-analyzed in simulation mode. This makes it possible to examine different signal conditining filters as well as the sensitivity of the model. Combined, the data analysis and the simulation mode make it easy to test and develop model theories and new ideas.  相似文献
