We examined whether starvation during the initial period of life in stem females affected reproductive characteristics of the offspring. Starvation treatment had different effects on rotifers hatched from resting eggs and those hatched from amictic eggs. When stem females experienced starvation after hatching, this induced a higher percentage of mixis in their offspring. When the same starvation treatment was applied to rotifers hatched from amictic eggs, there was no effect on the induction of mixis. It is probable that stem females hatched from resting eggs have specific features that are vulnerable to unfavorable environmental conditions, and that these features can be inherited by their offspring through the maternal cytoplasm.  相似文献

Hypoglycemic effects of the H(2)O and MeOH extracts of the wood of Taxus yunnanensis were examined in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. The H(2)O extract significantly lowered the fasting blood glucose level by 33.7% at a 100mg/kg dose on intraperitoneal administration. From the active H(2)O extract of the wood, three lignans, i.e., isotaxiresinol (1), secoisolariciresinol (2) and taxiresinol (3), were isolated as major components. These lignans were further tested for their hypoglycemic effects on the same experimental model. At a dose of 100mg/kg (i.p.), isotaxiresinol (1) reduced the fasting blood glucose level of diabetic rats by 34.5%, while secoisolariciresinol (2) and taxiresinol (3) reduced by 33.4% and 20.9%, respectively. The blood glucose lowering effects of 1 and 2 were stronger than the mixture of tolbutamide (200mg/kg) and buformin (1mg/kg) used as a positive control, which lowered fasting blood glucose level by 24.0%.  相似文献

Bi‐directional sex change has recently been reported in a range of reef fishes, including haremic species that were earlier thought to be protogynous (female to male). However, the occurrence of this phenomenon and the social conditions driving the reversion of males to females (reversed sex change) have been poorly documented under natural conditions. Reversed sex change is predicted to occur in low‐density populations where facultative monogamy is common. However, few studies have evaluated this over a long period in such populations. We documented the occurrence of bi‐directional sex change during a 3‐yr demographic survey of a population characterised by small harem sizes in haremic hawkfish Cirrhitichthys falco. New males were derived following a change in sex of functional females (secondary males; n = 3) and juveniles always matured first as females (n = 3). Thus, C. falco exhibited a typical protogynous sexual pattern, consistent with a range of haremic fish species. We observed reversed sex change in two males. In both cases, all the females disappeared from their harems and the neighbouring males expanded their territories to encompass the territories of the sex changers. However, bachelor males did not always revert to females. A dominant male experienced bachelor status twice but regained mating opportunities following the immigration of a female into his territory or by taking a female from a neighbouring harem. Thus, we conclude that bachelor males use reversed sex change as a facultative tactic to regain reproductive status in a haremic mating system. In addition, we discuss the influence of harem size upon occurrence of reversed sex change.  相似文献

The expression balance of M2 and M3 muscarinic receptor subtypes on the pathogenesis of airway hyperresponsiveness was investigated by using two congenitally related strains of guinea pigs, bronchial-hypersensitive (BHS) and bronchial-hyposensitive (BHR). CCh-induced airway responses in vivo and in vitro were investigated by comparing the effects of muscarinic receptor subtype antagonists, and the relative amounts of M2 and M3 muscarinic receptor mRNA in tracheal smooth muscle and lung tissue were investigated. After treatment with muscarinic receptor subtype antagonists, the ventilatory mechanics (VT, Raw, and Cdyn) of response to CCh aerosol inhalation were measured by the bodyplethysmograph method. The effects of these antagonists on CCh-induced tracheal smooth muscle contraction were also investigated. The effects of M2 muscarinic receptor blockade were less but the effects of M3 muscarinic receptors blockade on the airway contractile responses were greater in BHS than in BHR. In M3 muscarinic receptor blockades, CCh-induced tracheal contractions in BHS were significantly greater than those in BHR. In tracheal smooth muscle from BHS, the relative amount of M2 muscarinic receptors mRNA was less but that of M3 muscarinic receptor mRNA was more than those in BHR. These results suggest that the high ACh level as a consequence of dysfunction of M2 muscarinic autoreceptors and the excessive effect of M3 muscarinic receptors on the airway smooth muscle may play an important role in the pathogenesis of airway hyperresponsiveness.  相似文献

We investigated the correlation between the SOD activity of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and gastroduodenal diseases and the characteristics of strains exposed to oxidative stress. Two sequenced strains, 26695 and J99, and clinical isolates from 156 Japanese patients with gastroduodenal diseases such as gastric cancer (n= 59) and non-cancer (n= 97) were used. SOD activities of all 158 isolates were measured and were divided into three groups: high-SOD activity (>0.22, n= 2), moderate-SOD activity (0.15≦≦0.22, n= 16) and low-SOD activity (<0.15, n= 140). Expressions of H. pylori Fe-SOD were examined by western blotting with anti-H. pylori Fe-SOD antibody prepared inhouse, and the profiles of Fe-SOD activity were investigated by zymogram with activity staining in native-PAGE. The characteristics of strains from high-SOD and low-SOD groups were examined under oxidative stress by paraquat. The average of H. pylori SOD activity was significantly higher in the cancer group than in the non-cancer group (P < 0.05). However, irrespective of SOD activity level, the amount of Fe-SOD expressed was variable among individual strains. Zymogram revealed a single band in moderate-SOD and low-SOD strains, but multiple bands in high-SOD strains were observed. These bands were confirmed as H. pylori Fe-SOD. Under oxidative stress with paraquat, low-SOD strains were drastically eliminated without inducible SOD activity; however, high-SOD strains were still viable with increased SOD activity. This study is the first to exhibit the characteristics of high-SOD activity strains representing multiple bands in zymograms and the correlation between H. pylori SOD activity and gastric cancer.  相似文献

Coated vesicles prepared from bovine brains contained a protein kinase activity which catalyzed the phosphorylation of endogenous structural proteins, Mr 150 000, 120 000, 48 000 and 32 000. An endogenous protein, Mr 48 000 was most strongly phosphorylated by this kinase. This protein kinase also phosphorylated exogenous proteins, phosvitin intensely and casein slightly but not histone or protamine. The enzyme activity was independent of cyclic nucleotides or Ca2+/calmodulin. Mg2+ stimulated the kinase activity. Some divalent cations were substituted for Mg2+; the potency decreased in the order Mn2+, Mg2+, Co2+, Ca2+, Zn2+. Two separate subfractions, the outer coat and the inner vesicle (core), were prepared from coated vesicles by a urea treatment followed by sucrose density gradient centrifugation and dialysis. The kinase activity was found predominantly in the coat subfraction.  相似文献
