Captive flocks of red jungle fowl (Gallus gallus) experimentallyinfected with the intestinal nematode Ascaridia galli were usedto test Hamilton and Zuk's (1982) hypothesis that parasitesadversely affect male secondary sex characters and that femalesprefer unparasitized over parasitized males. Infected chicksgrew more slowly than uninfected controls, with the effect particularlypronounced on comb length rather than tarsus length or bodyweight. At sexual maturity, infected roosters had duller combsand eyes, shorter combs and tail feathers, and paler hacklefeathers than control roosters. In experimental mate choicetests, females preferred unparasitized over parasitized roostersby about 2: 1, and an analysis of covariance revealed that thehens were using the traits on which the two groups differedto make their mate choice decisions. Finally, in a test of anextension of the Hamilton and Zuk hypothesis, control and infectedmales were not distinguishable based on non sexually-selectedcharacters such as bill size, suggesting that parasites havea disproportionately larger effect on ornamental traits. 相似文献

The displays and social behavior of two closely related species of leopard lizards, Gambelia silus and Gambelia wislizenii, are described.
- 1 The main difference between the social behavior of the two species is the presence of home range defense in G. silus and the lack of it in G. wislizenii. G. silus is typical of iguanids in its use of displays and defense of a home range by males. However, G. wislizenii is unusual because both sexes display infrequently, the displays do not appear to be associated with interactions between conspecifics, and neither sex defends a home range.
- 2 Male G. silus are most likely defending an area where they can find a female on a day to day basis. The larger male home ranges included more females than the smallest home ranges. Food, burrows, basking, and shelter sites did not appear to be the primary defended resource.
- 3 The absence of home range defense in G. wislizenii is related to its diet of vertebrate prey, mode of foraging and poor visibility in the habitat. The costs of destroying its camouflage in terms of capture of prey and predator avoidance appear to be greater than the benefits of defending a territory.

Understanding the impacts of atmospheric [CO2] and drought on leaf respiration (R) and its response to changes in temperature is critical to improve predictions of plant carbon‐exchange with the atmosphere, especially at higher temperatures. We quantified the effects of [CO2]‐enrichment (+240 ppm) on seasonal shifts in the diel temperature response of R during a moderate summer drought in Eucalyptus saligna growing in whole‐tree chambers in SE Australia. Seasonal temperature acclimation of R was marked, as illustrated by: (1) a downward shift in daily temperature response curves of R in summer (relative to spring); (2)≈60% lower R measured at 20oC (R20) in summer compared with spring; and (3) homeostasis over 12 months of R measured at prevailing nighttime temperatures. R20, measured during the day, was on average 30–40% higher under elevated [CO2] compared with ambient [CO2] across both watered and droughted trees. Drought reduced R20 by≈30% in both [CO2] treatments resulting in additive treatment effects. Although [CO2] had no effect on seasonal acclimation, summer drought exacerbated the seasonal downward shift in temperature response curves of R. Overall, these results highlight the importance of seasonal acclimation of leaf R in trees grown under ambient‐ and elevated [CO2] as well as under moderate drought. Hence, respiration rates may be overestimated if seasonal changes in temperature and drought are not considered when predicting future rates of forest net CO2 exchange. 相似文献

Isolation and characterization of microsatellite loci in Alasmidonta heterodon (Bivalvia: Unionidae)

We developed 13 species‐specific microsatellite markers for the federally endangered Atlantic slope unionid Alasmidonta heterodon. Four to 18 alleles per locus were observed among 30 individuals. Observed heterozygosity throughout the loci ranged from 26.9 to 86.2% and averaged 63.6%. Estimates of individual pairwise genetic distances indicated that levels of genetic diversity among loci were sufficient to produce unique multilocus genotypes for all animals surveyed. Randomization tests showed that genotypes for this collection were consistent with Hardy–Weinberg expectations, and no significant linkage disequilibrium was observed between loci. These loci therefore appear suitable for population surveys, kinship assessment and other such applications. 相似文献

Abstract It is hypothesized that plant species that produce vertebrate-dispersed seeds (fleshy fruits and brightly coloured arillate seeds) would not be common in fire-prone vegetation because seeds are deposited on the soil surface and are unlikely to survive fires. They have not previously been known to have any means of burial that would enable them to await the next fire as a buried soil seed-bank. We studied vertebrate-dispersed species in fire-prone sclerophyll vegetation to look at mechanisms used by vertebrate-dispersed plants for persisting in these environments. Seeds do not survive heating to 150°C, although species from fire-prone environments are more likely to tolerate moderate heating (80°C) without affecting viability than vertebrate-dispersed species from environments where fire is rare. Most vertebrate-dispersed species have the capacity to regenerate vegetatively, although they are not more likely to have this strategy than ant-dispersed species. Finally, ants do take vertebrate-dispersed seeds and fruits (particularly small ones) indicating the potential for the formation of a soil seed-bank. Some species only persist in fire-prone environments by recolonizing from unburnt areas. 相似文献

The abundances of litter and soil fauna and some related environmental measures are given for two Australian subtropical forests, a notophyll vine forest (or rainforest) and a wet sclerophyll forest. Animals were more abundant in the wet sclerophyll forest; peak abundances were recorded in summer in both forests. Mites and Collembola accounted for 79% of the rainforest fauna and for 85% of the wet sclerophyll forest fauna. Most mites in the wet sclerophyll forest were Crypto stigmata (68%); in the rainforest both Cryptostigmata and Mesostigmata were well represented (84%). Patterns of aggregations of individuals within major faunal groups differed for the two forests. Correlations are made between the numbers of individuals of Collembola, of mites and of each order of mite and the environmental measures. Significant correlations emerged for some environmental measures in some seasons. Results are compared with those of other studies and it is concluded that poor or no humus development restricts the numbers of individuals living on tropical or subtropical forest floors. Speculations are presented to account for the difference between the faunas in the two Australian subtropical forests. 相似文献
