Five belugas, or white whales (Delphinapterus leucas), were tracked by satellite from Creswell Bay, Somerset Island, in the Canadian high Arctic towards West Greenland in autumn 2001. After 1 October, three of the whales stayed in the North Water polynya and the other two whales moved to West Greenland. One of the whales that moved to Greenland migrated south along the west coast, following a route and timing similar to another beluga tracked in 1996. The belugas that moved towards West Greenland from Canada did so before or near 1 October. The movements of both these whales followed a similar timing and assumed migratory route of belugas hunted in autumn in West Greenland. In Greenland, the hunt begins in September, where the first whales are taken in the northernmost community of Qaanaaq. Hunting takes place farther south in Upernavik in October, and finally in November and December, belugas are taken even farther south in Uummannaq and Disko Bay. The whales that remain in the North Water after 1 October most likely do not contribute to the harvest in West Greenland. Based on the total number of belugas satellite-tracked in Canada between 1995 and 2001 with tags that lasted beyond 1 October, approximately 0.15 (95% CI 0.06-0.35; n=26) of the summering stock of belugas in the Canadian high Arctic move to West Greenland for the winter. Genetic studies have indicated that belugas moving east through Lancaster Sound are significantly differentiated from belugas taken in the autumn hunt in West Greenland. These conflicting results suggest molecular genetics cannot be solely relied on to reveal the stock identity of these belugas.  相似文献

The experiments, performed in pentobarbital sodium-anesthetized rats, consisted of a 1-h equilibration period followed by two 30-min control periods. Subsequently, synthetic rat pro atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) [proANP-(1-30)] (n = 8) was given as a bolus of 10 microg in 1 ml of 0.9% saline followed by an infusion at 30 ng/min (20 microl/min) for six additional periods. Control rats (n = 6) received only 0.45% saline in the appropriate volumes. Mean arterial pressure, renal blood flow, and glomerular filtration rate did not change significantly in either group during the proANP-(1-30) infusion. Urine flow and potassium excretion increased approximately 50% in the proANP-(1-30)-infused group only (P < 0.05). Sodium excretion and fractional excretion of sodium, expressed as the change from their own baselines, were significantly increased by the proANP-(1-30) infusion (P < 0.05), whereas cGMP excretion was similar in both groups. These results suggest that the rat sequence of proANP-(1-30) produces a natriuresis in the rat independent of changes in hemodynamics and renal cGMP production. In a second study, rats (n = 8) were prepared as above and pretreated with 0.4 ml iv of rabbit serum containing an antibody directed against proANP-(1-30) (anti-proANP group). The rats were volume expanded with 3 ml of 6% albumin in Krebs and observed for 3 h to determine if the anti-proANP would attenuate the responses to volume expansion. Control rats (n = 7) received 0.4 ml of normal rabbit serum. The elevation in potassium excretion in response to volume expansion was significantly attenuated in the anti-proANP group (P < 0.05). Sodium excretion and urine flow responses also tended to be reduced but not significantly. These results suggest that in the rat, proANP-(1-30) plays a physiological role in regulating renal excretion.  相似文献

The response of barley seedlings to inoculation with associative rhizobacteria Azospirillum lipoferum 137, Arthrobacter mysorens 7, Agrobacterium radiobacter 10 and Flavobacterium sp. L30 was studied in hydroponic and quartz sand cultures in the presence of 50 microM CdCl2. Cadmium caused severe inhibition in the growth and uptake of nutrient elements by the plants. Inoculation with the bacteria slightly stimulated root length and biomass of hydroponically grown Cd-treated seedlings. The bacteria increased the content of nutrients such as P, Mg, Ca, Fe, Mn and Na in roots and or shoots of the plants grown in the absence of Cd. Positive changes in the element composition caused by the bacteria were less pronounced in Cd-treated plants, whereas the total amount of nutrients taken by the inoculated plants was generally increased significantly. The content of Cd in the inoculated plants was unchanged, except increased in roots upon addition of A. lipoferum 137. Inoculation did not affect the activity of peroxidase, alpha-mannosidase, phosphodiesterae, alpha-galactosidase, and concentration of sulfhydryl compounds used as biochemical markers of stress in plant roots. The results showed that associative bacteria were capable of decreasing partially the toxicity of Cd for the barley plants through the improvement in uptake of nutrient elements.  相似文献

Previous studies using a murine model of coinhalation of Legionella pneumophila and Hartmannella vermiformis have shown a significantly enhanced intrapulmonary growth of L. pneumophila in comparison to inhalation of legionellae alone (J. Brieland, M. McClain, L. Heath, C. Chrisp, G. Huffnagle, M. LeGendre, M. Hurley, J. Fantone, and C. Engleberg, Infect. Immun. 64:2449-2456, 1996). In this study, we introduce an in vitro coculture model of legionellae, Mono Mac 6 cells (MM6) and Acanthamoeba castellanii, using a cell culture chamber system which separates both cell types by a microporous polycarbonate membrane impervious to bacteria, amoebae, and human cells. Whereas L. pneumophila has shown a maximal 4-log-unit multiplication within MM6, which could not be further increased by coculture with Acanthamoeba castellanii, significantly enhanced replication of L. gormanii, L. micdadei, L. steigerwaltii, L. longbeachae, and L. dumoffii was seen after coculture with amoebae. This effect was seen only with uninfected amoebae, not with Legionella-infected amoebae. The supporting effect for intracellular multiplication in MM6 could be reproduced in part by addition of a cell-free coculture supernatant obtained from a coincubation experiment with uninfected A. castellanii and Legionella-infected MM6, suggesting that amoeba-derived effector molecules are involved in this phenomenon. This coculture model allows investigations of molecular and biochemical mechanisms which are responsible for the enhancement of intracellular multiplication of legionellae in monocytic cells after interaction with amoebae.  相似文献

The effects of callitrichid primate helpers (allocare-givers other than an infant's father) on the survival, reproduction or behavior of infants and parents are reviewed, using both published studies and data from free-ranging golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia). Three lines of evidence suggest that helpers may increase their own inclusive fitness: (1) The number of adult males acting as helpers in free-ranging groups is correlated with the number of surviving infants in 3 callitrichid species. However, the lack of a negative correlation with number of infants dying suggests that activities other than direct infant care (e.g. territory defense) may be more important, especially in newly formed groups. (2) In 2 species, captive groups with helpers carry infants for longer periods of time than do groups without helpers. Whether such differences would translate into meaningful survival differences in free-ranging groups is unclear. (3) Helpers reduce the energetic burden of parents by reducing the amount of time they spend transporting or provisioning infants in at least 4 species. Reproductive males are more likely than reproductive females to benefit from the presence of helpers, reducing their investment in infant care activities as the number of helpers in the group increases. In free-ranging golden lion tamarins, the reproductive tenure of males, but not females, increases with the number of helpers in the group, suggesting that a reduction in energetic investment may translate into increased survival. 'Decisions' made by helpers to participate in infant transport are weighed against competing needs for foraging, vigilance, territory defense and, in some cases, prospecting for breeding opportunities. Given this complexity, a sophisticated model may be required to answer the question of how helpers 'decide' to participate in infant care versus other activities.  相似文献

Three models are presented, which describe the aggregation of objects into groups and the distributions of groups sizes and group numbers within habitats. The processes regarded are pure accumulation processes which involve only formation and invasion of groups. Invasion represents the special case of fusion when only single objects - and not groups - join a group of certain size. The basic model is derived by a single parameter, the formation probability q, which represents the probability of an object to form a new group. A novel, discrete and finite distribution that results for the group sizes is deduced from this aggregation process and it is shown that it converges to a geometric distribution if the number of objects tends to infinity. Two extensions of this model, which both converge to the Waring distribution, are added: the model can be extended either with a beta distributed formation probability or with the assumption that the invasion probability depends on the group size. Relationships between the limiting distributions involved are discussed.  相似文献

Mutations in the FBN1 gene, which encodes fibrillin-1, cause Marfan syndrome (MFS) and have been associated with a wide range of milder, overlap phenotypes. The factors that modulate phenotypic severity, both between and within families, remain to be determined. This study examines the relationship between the FBN1 genotype and phenotype in families with extremely mild phenotypes and in those that show striking clinical variation among apparently affected individuals. In one family, clinically similar but etiologically distinct disorders are segregating independently. In another, somatic mosaicism for a mutant FBN1 allele is associated with subdiagnostic manifestations, whereas germ-line transmission of the identical mutation causes severe and rapidly progressive disease. A third family cosegregates mild mitral valve prolapse syndrome with a mutation in FBN1 that can be functionally distinguished from those associated with the classic MFS phenotype. These data have immediate relevance for the diagnostic and prognostic counseling of patients and their family members.  相似文献
