PHYSIOLOGY OF LIGHT-REQUIRING GERMINATION IN ERAGROSTIS SEEDS   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The photorequirement for the germination of Eragrostis seedsdecreases with the progress of their after-ripening, and thegermination occurs whether in continuous light or in darknessat the final stage of after-ripening. The dehydration of seedsor the puncturing of seed coats also results in a decrease ofphotorequirement for germination. The rate of water absorptionof seeds increases with the germination capacity under continuousdark condition. However, there is no correlation between therespiration rate and the germination capacity; respiration isstimulated in the punctured seeds, but not in the after-ripenedseeds. The after-ripened or punctured seeds which no longer have aphotorequirement become light-sensitive again, when they areallowed to germinate in the air of low oxygen concentrations.The assumption is presented that the permeability to oxygenof the seed coat may be a factor controlling the seed germinationof this species. According to previous phylogeographic studies, high mountains at low latitudes are important areas for the study of the evolutionary history of arctic–alpine plants in surviving the Pleistocene climatic oscillations. To evaluate this hypothesis, we elucidated the genetic structure of the arctic–alpine plant, Loiseleuria procumbens , in the Japanese archipelago, which corresponds to one of the southernmost limits of its distribution, using 152 individuals from 17 populations that covered the entire distribution of the Japanese archipelago and Sakhalin, in addition to samples from Sweden. Based on 854 bp of chloroplast DNA, we detected eight haplotypes. Along with haplotype distribution, strong genetic differentiation between populations in central and northern Japan was elucidated by a neighbour-joining tree (100%) and spatial analysis of molecular variance (79%), which is consistent with other alpine plants in Japan, regardless of the species' range. In addition, the southernmost populations from northern Japan showed specific genetic structure, although the remaining areas of northern Japan and Sakhalin harboured an homogenous genetic structure. Our results suggest that the populations in central Japan persisted for a long time during the Pleistocene climatic oscillation and that genetic divergence occurred in situ , supporting our hypothesis in conjunction with a previous study of another arctic–alpine plant, Diapensia lapponica subsp. obovata .  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 97 , 403–412.  相似文献

Like melanophores of many teleosts, those of the dark chub, Zacco temmincki, and the common minnow, Z. platypus (Cyprinidae, Cypriniformes) responded to norepinephrine (NE) by the aggregation of pigment. It was further found that some melanophores were responsive to acetylcholine (ACh) in the same way. The response to NE was blocked by an alpha-adrenergic blocker, phentolamine, whereas the response to ACh was not. By contrast, two muscarinic cholinoceptor antagonists, namely, atropine and scopolamine, effectively blocked the action of ACh. The pigment aggregation due to the liberated sympathetic neurotransmitter was blocked by phentolamine but not by cholinergic blockers. These results suggest that, although the melanophores of these species are controlled in an orthodox manner by the sympathetic nervous system, some of them possess extra muscarinic cholinoceptors that also mediate the aggregation of pigment. The present report is the first to describe the presence of cholinoceptors on the chromatophores in species of fish other than those that belong to the order Siluriformes. The evolutionary implications of these findings are discussed.  相似文献

Using selective antagonists, including pirenzepine, adiphenine, AF-DX116, gallamine, and 4-DAMP we attempted to characterize the muscarinic cholinoceptors on the melanophores of the translucent glass catfish Kryptopterus bicirrhis and the mailed catfish Corydoras paleatus. The M3 receptor-selective antagonist, 4-DAMP, potently inhibited the acetylcholine-induced aggregation of pigment in both species. It appeared, therefore, that the receptors that mediated the cholinergically evoked aggregation of melanosomes in these species were of the M3 muscarinic subtype.  相似文献

A congenital double-hearted chick embryo was found among 16,171 embryos, which was at the 11 somite stage of development. The pacemaking activity of its double heart was monitored simultaneously from 9 different regions by optical methods. The right and left half hearts were tubular, and in both, spontaneous rhythmical action potentials and beating were detected, and differences were detected in their rhythms. Action potentials were also monitored in a malformed embryonic heart formed by partial fusion of the primordia. The results are discussed in relation to genesis of intrinsic pacemaking activity in cardiac primordia and to a spatial gradient of rhythmicity in the early stages of cardiogenesis.  相似文献

NEW ARGININE-CONTAINING PEPTIDES ISOLATED FROM CHLORELLA CELLS   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Seven kinds of arginine-containing peptides were isolated fromthe cells of Chlorella ellipsoidea, and their structures wereinvestigated. Their amino acid make-ups and quantities presentin randomly grown algal cells were found to be as follows (indecreasing order of contentin moles per dry weight of cells): Arg-Arg, Arg-Arg-Glu, Arg-Arg-Arg, Arg-Glu> Arg-(Arg2, Glu)-Glu>Arg-(Arg3,Glu), Arg-(Glu, Asp) Using synchronously mass-cultured algal cells, the quantitiesof these peptides as they changed during the algal life cyclewere followed. It was found that, except in the case of Arg-Arg-Arg,the contents (in moles per dry weight of cells) of the peptides(i) markedly increased during the stages from Dn to L1, (ii)remained almost constant or more or less appreciably increasedduring the stages from L1 to L3, and (iii) decreased sharplyduring the transformation of L3-cells (via L4) into Dn-cellsin the dark. The content of Arg-Arg-Arg remained almost constantduring the period from Dn to L3, and on transference of L3-cellsin the dark it increased temporarily and then decreased duringthe transformation of L4-cells into Dn-cells.
