Like other Anisoptera Hemianax ephippiger (Burmeister) bears two sets of copulatory apparatuses. The first set which is primary in nature is located on the ventral surface of the ninth abdominal segment and consists of the vestigial penis, the gonocoxites, the supra-anal appendages, the infra-anal appendage. The supra-anal appendages are well developed, lanceolate with serrate margin and spinous apices. They are dorso-ventrally flattened and furnished with long hairs and black teeth-like tubercles (T). The secondary copulatory complex is lodged inside the membranous fossa located on the ventral surface of second and third abdominal segments. It consists of anterior lamina, the posterior lamina, the supporting framework, the hamules, the penis sheath, the penis vesicle and the penis. The anterior lamina is deeply cleft at the posterior margin to accommodate the ovipositor of the female during copulation. Both the portions of the supporting framework are well developed. The anterior portion is somewhat rectangular while the posterior portion is nearly U-shaped. The anterior hamules are well developed with truncated and hooked portions, while the posterior hamules are very much reduced. The penis sheath is forcepate with well developed rectangular flap which hangs over the penis. The distribution of labelled assimilates following the assimilation of 14CO2 in groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) by single leaves at different nodes was investigated using autoradiographic technique. In the vegetative stage growing leaves assimilated most of the 14carbon, while the fully expanded leaves exported most of its radiocarbon to the apices, young expanding leaves and to the roots. Soon after the formation of the pegs and the growth and development of the pods, the developing pods become the major sinks. The morphology of Trypanosoma humboldti n. sp. is described from living and stained specimens obtained from the blood of a catshark, Schroederichthys chilensis. This represents the first report of a trypanosome in fish from the eastern Pacific Ocean. It is distinguished by its size and apparent lack of pleomorphism. The presence of a leech, Branchellion ravenellii, attached to the catshark, raises the possibility that it can act as a vector. The extent and manner of ethylene involvement in germination of lettuce (Lactuca Sativa L. cv. Mesa 659) seed at a moderate temperature (20°C) were investigated. Inhibition of germination at low pressure of 150 mmHg in an oxygen flow-through system was alleviated to a marked extent by ethylene. Carbon dioxide was ineffective by itself but caused further alleviation of inhibition in presence of ethylene and oxygen. Other seed treatments which partially alleviated the inhibition caused by low pressure included soaking in 10μM of fusicoccin and a prior treatment with acetone. Of the two ethylene adsorbents used, Purafil was more effective in inhibiting germination in a closed container. Although the ethylene biosynthesis inhibitor, 8-hydroxyquinoline (1.0 mM). showed no effect on ethylene production, it markedly inhibited germination and the effect was partially reversed by ethylene and GA3. An ethoxy analog of rhizobitoxine, on the other hand, had little or no effect on germination but strongly inhibited the ethylene production. Although no causal relation of ethylene to germination was established, the evidence presented here implicates ethylene, together with other gases, in the regulation of germination. 相似文献

Stock plants of pea (Pisum sativum L. cv. Alaska) were grown at different controlled levels of irradiance (4, 16 or 38 W m?2) for 11 days from sowing. Morphactin (CFM, methyl-2-chloro-9-hydroxy-fluorene-9-carboxylate) was applied to the apex of the stock plants 3 days before cuttings were excised. The cuttings were rooted at 16 W m?2. High levels of morphactin (>5 × 10?3 mg l?1) inhibited root formation in the cuttings. Low concentrations of CFM (5 × 10?5 mg l?1) promoted the formation of adventitious roots in cuttings from plants grown at all three levels of irradiance, with the most pronounced effect in cuttings from 4 W m?2. Rapid progress in genome research creates a wealth of information on the functional annotation of mammalian genome sequences. However, as we accumulate large amounts of scientific information we are facing problems of how to integrate and relate the data produced by various genomic approaches. Here, we propose the novel concept of an organ atlas where diverse data from expression maps to histological findings to mutant phenotypes can be queried, compared and visualized in the context of a three-dimensional reconstruction of the organ. We will seek proof of concept for the organ atlas by elucidating genetic pathways involved in development and pathophysiology of the kidney. The stem succulent perennial halophyteHaloxylon recurvum Bungeex. Boiss. grows and produces seed under highly saline conditionsand seeds are deposited in saline soils. Experiments were conductedto determine the effect of salinity and temperature on the germinationof seeds. Results indicate that seeds can germinate at veryhigh salt concentrations (500 mM). However, highest germinationpercentages were obtained in distilled water. Cooler thermoperiodspromoted germination, while high temperatures significantlyinhibited the germination of seeds at all NaCl concentrationstested. Rate of germination decreased with increases in salinity.At higher thermoperiods the rate of germination was significantlylower in comparison to lower thermoperiods. Seeds recover afterbeing transferred to distilled water and recovery was higherfrom higher salinity concentrations and lower thermoperiods.Final recovery germination percentages in high salt treatmentswere significantly lower than non-saline controls, indicatingthat exposure to high concentration of NaCl permanently inhibitedgermination. During postglacial colonization, populations that diverged in different refugia produced a patchwork of genomes, often delimited with sharp hybrid zones. The outcome of hybridization following the secondary contact of two genetically distinct populations is hard to predict. In this context, the present study investigated the genetic structure of the hybrid zone between the Drnholec and Białowieża chromosome races of the common shrew ( Sorex araneus ) in Poland using biparentally inherited (seven autosomal microsatellites) and uniparentally inherited (Y-linked microsatellite and mtDNA) molecular markers. On the basis of diagnostic chromosomes, the Drnholec and Białowieża races were classified to different karyotypic groups, which were believed to have independent glacial histories. It was found that genetic differentiation between the Drnholec and Białowieża races was weak and nonsignificant with respect to all molecular markers. However, these results are in contrast with the chromosomal structure of this hybrid zone. The very sharp frequency clines of the diagnostic chromosomes strongly suggest that gene flow between the Drnholec and Białowieża races was reduced. Nonsignificant correlations between genetic differentiation and both the presence of an environmental barrier and geographical distance reveal that only differences in karyotypes might be a reason for limited gene exchange between the races. Abstract Ethylene and ethane production in mung bean hypocotyl sections were evaluated as possible indicators of stress due to contact with four salts that are common in natural sites. Ethylene production decreased with increasing concentrations of applied NaCl and KCl. When CaCl2 was applied, the ethylene evolution was greater. However, when MgCl2 was applied, ethylene evolution remained high then decreased and at higher salt concentrations again showed an increase. NaCl (up to 0.1 kmol m?1) and KCl (up to 0.5 kmol m?3) caused a concentration-dependent increase in ethane production. The ethane production with CaCl2 was the lowest among the salts tested and only a minute increase was noticed with the increase of concentration from 0.01 to 1 kmol m?3. Ethane production showed a distinct maximum at 0.2 kmol m?3 MgCl2. The introduction of 0.01 kmol m?3 CaCl2, as well as anaerobic conditions obtained by purging vials with N2, eliminated that high ethane production. Respiratory activity of the mung bean hypocotyl sections in MgCl2 concentrations from 0 to 0.5 kmol m?3 was correlated with ethane but not with ethylene production. The ethane/ethylene ratio showed three patterns for the four salts tested. 相似文献
