1. Sampling of lake fish assemblages is a challenging task in fish science, and the information obtained strongly depends on the choice of sampling gear. The use of more than one sampling technique is generally preferred in order to achieve a comprehensive view on fish assemblage structure. Therefore, the knowledge of whether catches between fishing gears are comparable is crucial. 2. We compared catches in benthic multi‐mesh gillnets with fish biomass estimates obtained by vertical hydroacoustics in 18 European lakes strongly varying in morphometry and trophic status. Separate analyses were conducted for different depth strata and for several fish length thresholds to account for depth‐ and size‐selective gillnet catches. 3. Gillnet catches and hydroacoustically obtained fish biomass estimates were significantly correlated. The strength of correlations was independent of the fish length thresholds applied, but varied across different depth strata of the lakes, with the strongest correlations occurring in the shallow strata. 4. The results support the applicability of vertical hydroacoustics for the quantification of fish biomass in stratified lakes. Survey designs combining hydroacoustics with limited gillnetting at sampling dates shortly one after the other, the latter for the purpose of inventory sampling only, are a cost‐effective strategy for sampling fish assemblages in lakes. However, gillnet sampling does not provide reliable fish density estimates in very deep lakes with separate, pelagic‐dwelling fish assemblages.  相似文献

Convergent evolution of shell shape is a well known phenomenon in gastropods that has caused much confusion in taxonomic and systematic studies. A paradigm is the patelliform shell shape in several taxa of the order Basommatophora. Historically, most freshwater limpets were assigned to the family Ancylidae. Based on anatomical data, some taxa were subsequently moved to different families. However, there are still doubts about the monophyly of the remaining ancylids. This is also true for the African limpets and particularly for species of the genus Burnupia Walker, 1912. In the present paper, two independent molecular markers (COI, 18S rRNA) are used to (a) infer the position of Burnupia within the Basommatophora and (b) to test whether the shell shape of Burnupia evolved independently. Bayesian and maximum likelihood analyses of 12 genera of limnic Basommatophora indicate that Burnupia not only appears to be distinct from the Ancylidae, but also from all other representatives of the superfamily Planorboidea studied here. Based on a generally well-supported phylogeny and preliminary anatomical data, it is concluded that patelliform shell shapes evolved at least three times in the taxa studied here and that the shell shape of Burnupia represents another case of convergent evolution. Global climate change impacts can already be tracked in many physical and biological systems; in particular, terrestrial ecosystems provide a consistent picture of observed changes. One of the preferred indicators is phenology, the science of natural recurring events, as their recorded dates provide a high-temporal resolution of ongoing changes. Thus, numerous analyses have demonstrated an earlier onset of spring events for mid and higher latitudes and a lengthening of the growing season. However, published single-site or single-species studies are particularly open to suspicion of being biased towards predominantly reporting climate change-induced impacts. No comprehensive study or meta-analysis has so far examined the possible lack of evidence for changes or shifts at sites where no temperature change is observed. We used an enormous systematic phenological network data set of more than 125 000 observational series of 542 plant and 19 animal species in 21 European countries (1971–2000). Our results showed that 78% of all leafing, flowering and fruiting records advanced (30% significantly) and only 3% were significantly delayed, whereas the signal of leaf colouring/fall is ambiguous. We conclude that previously published results of phenological changes were not biased by reporting or publication predisposition: the average advance of spring/summer was 2.5 days decade−1 in Europe. Our analysis of 254 mean national time series undoubtedly demonstrates that species' phenology is responsive to temperature of the preceding months (mean advance of spring/summer by 2.5 days°C−1, delay of leaf colouring and fall by 1.0 day°C−1). The pattern of observed change in spring efficiently matches measured national warming across 19 European countries (correlation coefficient r =−0.69, P <0.001).  相似文献

Diurnal variations in acetylene reduction and net hydrogen evolutionwere shown in five tropical and subtropical nitrogen-fixingtree symbioses. The symbioses studied in a growth chamber were:Acacia albida x TAL 1457, Leucaena leucocephala x TAL 1145,Prosopis chilensis x TAL 600, Casuarina glauca x HFP Cc13 andC. obesa x HFP Cc13. Acetylene reduction was highest at the end of the light periodin all symbioses studied. In the A. albida x TAL 1457 symbiosis,the diurnal variations in acetylene reduction and net hydrogenevolution showed a minor synchrony, while in the other symbiosesthe diurnal pattern of acetylene reduction and net hydrogenevolution clearly differed. Also, a diurnal variation in relativeefficiency of nitrogenase was shown in the A. albida x TAL 1457symbiosis. A hydrogen uptake enzyme was detected at a low substrate concentration(24.5 mmol m–3 H2) for L. leucocephala x TAL 1145, C.obesa x HFP Cc13 and has earlier been found for C. glauca xHFP CcI3. A hydrogen uptake system was also found for P. chilensisx TAL 600 and A. albida x TAL 1457 at a 17-fold higher substrateconcentration. The results show that a diurnal variation in C2H2 reductionand H2 evolution occurs, and that diurnal variation in the conversionfactor between C2H2 reduction and N2 fixation could occur. Three methods were used to study N2 fixation and effects ofwater deficit on N2 fixation: C2H2 reduction assay (ARA), 15Ndilution technique and accumulated N content. In addition, 15Ndilution was calculated both in a traditional way and in a modifiedway, which takes into consideration N and 15N content for theplants before the experiment started. The three methods wereapplied on the following Rhizobium-symbioses: Acacia albidaDel (Faidherbia albida (Del) A. Chev.) and Leucaena leucocephala(Lam) de Wit., and the Frankia-symbiosis Casuarina equisetifoliaL. The plants wereabout 4-months-old when they were harvested. Nitrogen derived from N2 fixation in control plants of Acaciaalbida was 54·2 mg as measured with ARA, while it was28·5 mg as measured with the 15N dilution technique,compared to 30·7 mg calculated as accumulated N. In comparison,L. leucocephala fixed 41·6 mg N (ARA), 53·5 mgN(15N dilution technique) and 56·3 mg N (accumulatedN). The Frankia-symbiosis had fixed 27·4 mg N as measuredby ARA, 8·1 mg N as measured by 15N dilution techniqueand 12·3 mg N as accumulated N. There were no differencesbetween the estimates based ontraditional and modified waysof calculating 15N dilution. The immediate effect of water deficit treatment on N2 fixationwas continuously measured inall species with ARA, which startedto decrease approximately 10 d after the initiation of the treatment,and declined to less than 5% of the initial level after 21–28d. The decrease in the amount of N derived from N2 fixation wasstudied in L. leucocephala during the period of treatment. Therewas a 26% decrease in amount of N derived from N2 fixation asresult of water deficit (as measured with ARA), while the decreasewas 23% when measured withboth the 15N dilution method and asaccumulated N. The three different methods for measuring N2 fixation and effectsof water deficit on N2 fixation are discussed. Frankia vesicle clusters were prepared from root nodules ofAlnus incana (L.) Moench inoculated either with a local sourceof Frankia or with Frankia Cpll. The capacity of vesicle clustersto respire was investigated by respirometric and enzymologicalstudies. Simultaneous addition of malate, glutamate, and NAD+supported respiration in both types of Frankia, though at asmaller rate compared to the substrates NADH or 6-phosphogluconate.The saturating concentrations of malate and glutamate were alsomuch higher than with the other substrates. No respiration wassupported by succinate. Activity of the enzymes malate dehydrogenase(EC 1.1.1.37 [EC] ) and glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (EC 2.6.1.1 [EC] )was demonstrated in crude extracts from both types of symbioticFrankia. Their maximum rates were high enough to account forthe respiration of malate and glutamate. This respiration wasinhibited by mersalylic acid, an inhibitor of the dicarboxylateshuttle in mitochondria, but it was shown that inhibition ofrespiration could be due to a direct effect on the enzymes.We conclude that respiration of malate and glutamate is mostlikely mediated by malate dehydrogenase and glutamate oxaloacetatetransaminase, but no explicit evidence for or against the presenceof a dicarboxylate carrier was found. The utilization of respiratorysubstrates was largely similar in the two types of Frankia,except for some differences in maximum rates and cofactor dependency. Nitrogenase Activity Measurements in Intact Plants of Alnus incana   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
A technique for C2H2-reduction assay on intact plants of Alnus incana (L.) Moench was evaluated. Cloned plants were grown, in pots, on fine gravel. During assay only the pot was inserted into a Perspex incubation chamber of simple construction. The incubation volume was rather small, plants with various shoot heights could be used, and the shoot was not exposed to the C2H4 produced. Intact plants showed high and constant C2H2-reduction rates during several hours of incubation. In comparison, excised nodulated roots conventionally incubated in test tubes showed low and decreasing rates, due to removal of the photo-synthesizing shoot and injury to the root nodules when drawn from the pot. Repeated nitrogenase activity assays on the same intact individual plants did not affect growth. The technique thus proved useful in studies. where repeated nitrogenase activity measurements are important.  相似文献
