The family of polygyrid land snails in North America is significant for its sympatric shell convergences, diversity of mating systems and complex zoogeography; its monophyly and its relation to other families has long been questionable. Cladistic analysis has been performed on one representative each of 17 subfamilies, including all three polygyrid subfamilies and one or more subfamilies each from all ten of the families that have been proposed as the polygyrid sister groups. Eighteen anatomical synapomorphies are used, of which eight are newly discovered, four are differently assessed from previous studies, and six are traditional. The resulting strict consensus tree of alternative maximum-parsimony cladograms is: (Acavidae (Ammonitellidae Corillidae ((Discidae Oreohelicidae) (Helminthoglyptidae Bradybaenidae Polygyridae (Thysanophoridae (Camaenidae Sagdidae)))))).
According to this working hypothesis, the Polygyridae are monophyletic, and their sister group remains unresolved, although the Acavidae, Ammonitellidae, Corillidae, Discidae and Oreohelicidae can be ruled out. Of the five classifications of stylommatophoran families that have been proposed in the past 12 years, the consensus tree is closest to that of Nordsieck. For future morphological work, three regions are recommended as potentially rich in unused phylogenetic information: the fertilization pouch-seminal receptacle complex, the ureter at the pneumostome and the ventral-chain ganglia. Simultaneous dissection, wkh side-by-side comparisons, is recommended over other methods for detecting homologies in land snails. Molecular characters should be exploited, because of the scarcity and the frequent homoplasy of morphological characters.  相似文献

Using microsatellite DNA variation, morphological measurements and sonagrams made from tape-recordings in the field, we examine die allopatric differentiation of six populations of the sharp-beaked ground finch, Geospiza difficilis , in the Galapagos archipelago. We ask how and why die populations became differentiated, and consider what die differences imply about speciation. An important factor is time; G. difficilis is one of the phylogenetically oldest species. Populations became differentiated by adapting in beak morphology to different food supplies. Since beak size and shape also function in conspecific mate recognition and choice, die potential for reproductive isolation from sister and parental taxa arose as a correlated effect of natural selection on resource-exploiting traits. This conforms to a standard explanation for the origin of pre-mating isolation as a byproduct of adaptive changes in allopatry without being adaptive itself. However, diis explanation is incomplete. Vocal characteristics also differentiated, partly as a result of natural and sexual selection independent of beak size change in environments with different sound transmitting properties. An additional element of chance is indicated by a comparison of closely-related populations on two islands, Wolf and Darwin, that are geographically close, and topographically and floristically similar. The populations have markedly different vocalizations. Morphological characters, vocalizations and genetic traits do not vary concordandy among die six populations. One population (Genovesa) is genetically more similar to other congeneric species. Phenotypic similarities with G. difficilis are the result of a uniquely long retention of shared ancestral traits. Arguments under the phylogenetic species concept justify recognizing this population as a separate species, Geospiza acutirostris. Under the biological species concept it should remain as currentiy classified, G. difficilis.  相似文献

The tyrosinase gene family is currently composed of three members, tyrosinase and two tyrosinase-related proteins, TRP-1 and TRP-2. These three gene products have all been found to act in the synthesis of melanin pigments with the enzyme tyrosinase catalyzing the initial rate-limiting steps. Thus far these genes have primarily been analyzed in higher vertebrates. We have used degenerate PCR primers to isolate a large fragment of an axolotl tyrosinase-related protein. Sequence analysis of the entire 1,057-bp fragment isolated indicates a high degree of similarity to the mouse TRP-1, the product of the brown locus. Phylogenetic analysis supports the conclusion that the fragment isolated corresponds to the axolotl TRP-1 homolog. This is the first TRP-1 gene to be identified in an amphibian species.  相似文献

Abstract:  Ontogenies are described for the first time for three species of Early Cambrian oryctocephalid trilobites: the oryctocephaline Changaspis elongata Lee, in Chien and the oryctocarines Duyunaspis duyunensis Chang and Chien, in Zhou et al . and Balangia balangensis Chien from the Balang Formation in eastern Ghuizhou Province, south-west China. The complete protaspid to holaspid ontogeny for Duyunaspis duyunensis and incomplete meraspid to holaspid ontogenies for Changaspis elongata and Balangia balangensis are described. The relative degree of ontogenetic variation within the lineage Duyunaspis duyunensis – Balangia balangensis is analysed and indicates that Balangia may have evolved from Duyunaspis by paedomorphosis. Decrease in thoracic segment number and concomitant increase in pygidial segment number in the later genus mirrors the pattern seen in the evolution of another oryctocephalid genus, Arthricocephalus . In both cases, selection was probably targeting an increase in cephalic convexity. This resulted in the evolution of a larger pygidium due to increased elevation of the axis above the substrate. The ontogenetic development of Changaspis provides evidence supporting the view that the Oryctocarinae may be considered as paedomorphic descendants of the Oryctocephalinae.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Colonisation of host trees by an endophytic herbivore, the spruce beetle, Dendroctonus rufipennis , is accompanied by invasion of its galleries by a number of fungal species. Four of these associated species were identified as Leptographium abietinum , Aspergillus fumigatus , Aspergillus nomius , and Trichoderma harzianum .
2.  Trichoderma and Aspergillus significantly reduced spruce beetle survival and reproduction in controlled assays.
3. A previously undescribed behaviour was observed, in which spruce beetle adults exuded oral secretions, especially within fungus-pervaded galleries.
4. These oral secretions inhibited the growth of fungi except A. nomius , and disrupted the morphology of the latter. Administration of these secretions indicated a dose-dependent inhibitory effect.
5. Oral secretions cultured on microbiological media yielded substantial bacterial growth.
6. Filter-sterilised secretions failed to inhibit fungal growth, evidence that the bacteria are responsible for the antifungal activity.
7. Nine bacterial isolates belonging to the Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, Gammaproteobacteria, and Betaproteobacteria taxa were obtained from the secretions.
8. Bacterial isolates showed species-specific inhibitory activity against the four fungi antagonistic to spruce beetle. The bacterium with the strongest fungal inhibition activity was the actinomycete Micrococcus luteus .
9. The production of bark beetle secretions containing bacteria that inhibit fungal growth is a novel finding. This suggests an additional level of complexity to ecological associations among bark beetles, conifers, and microorganisms, and an important adaptation for colonising subcortical tissue.  相似文献

This report describes a new, gentle procedure for rapid and efficient excystation of large numbers of infective sporozoites of Eimeria vermiformis and Eimeria stiedai. Excysted sporozoites are purified using modifications of a previously described ion-exchange chromatography method. The procedure avoids physical breakage of oocysts and results in greater than 70% recovery of the sporozoites present as sporulated oocysts (i.e. 5–6 sporozoites per sporulated oocyst). The recovered sporozoites are greater than 95% pure and are infective in vivo. We routinely isolate greater than 2 times 108 sporozoites without the use of specialized or expensive equipment.  相似文献

Observations of freshwater drinking in Eiders feeding primarily on mussels led us to hypothesize that the highly saline sea water enclosed in mussels could cause salt-related dehydration problems in the ducks, since they consume entire mussels. The proportion of sea water increases with increasing mussel size. Smaller duck species are more sensitive to the higher salt content of larger mussels than are larger ducks; however, salt stress may be avoided by feeding in habitats with lower salinity, by feeding on less salty food items, by utilizing smaller mussels, by drinking fresh water, or by employing low energy foraging techniques. A possible evolutionary strategy for solving the salt problem might be to increase body mass, enabling ducks to utilize larger mussels without passing an upper salt consumption limit. At the same time, foraging on larger mussels is more economical. Although large size facilitates the utilization of brackish and marine environments, it may be selected against in ducks breeding in fresh water, where fish competition may reduce optimal food item size. In conclusion, salinity is an important habitat barrier in both breeding and overwintering diving ducks, but there are various ways of crossing this barrier. To understand better how ducks utilize their habitats, however, it is necessary to measure habitat salinity levels and the size of both ducks and their preferred and less-preferred food types.  相似文献
