Alterations in the biomass-specific productivity of periphyton assemblages mediated by fish grazing 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
1. In an experimental flume, we examined the effects of a biomass reduction and alteration of taxonomic composition, because of grazing by the fish Plecoglossus altivelis, on the net biomass accumulation of periphyton. 2. Grazed and ungrazed assemblages with different biomass and taxonomic composition were first prepared in fish enclosures and exclosures, respectively. These assemblages were then set out in the flume and incubated for 2 days under grazing‐free conditions to examine (i) the relationship between biomass and biomass accumulation rate and (ii) the effect of taxonomic composition on the relationship between these two. 3. The grazed and ungrazed assemblages were dominated by upright filamentous cyanobacteria and diatoms, respectively. The rate of biomass accumulation decreased with increasing periphyton biomass in both the grazed and ungrazed assemblages, and was lower in the grazed than the ungrazed assemblages at any biomass level. 4. The results showed that the reduction in biomass and the alteration of taxonomic composition due to fish grazing have opposite effects on biomass‐specific productivity. Biomass accumulation rate increased in response to biomass reduction, although a shift in dominance from diatoms to upright filamentous cyanobacteria decreased the overall productivity of the periphyton. 相似文献

To elucidate the specific associations of insects with glandular plants, the relationship between a plant bug and a wild azalea was examined. The plant bug Orthotylus gotoi Yasunaga (Hemiptera: Miridae) was found only on shrubs of Rhododendron macrosepalum Maxim. (Ericaceae) in Kyoto, central Japan. R. macrosepalum has leaves, stems, and sepals with dense stalked glands that trap and kill many arthropods. However, nymphs and adults of O. gotoi are able to move freely on R . macrosepalum . O. gotoi frequently fed on carcasses of various arthropods trapped on R . macrosepalum , whereas it rarely fed upon plant tissues. In laboratory experiments, O. gotoi nymphs mainly fed on the carcasses of insects, which resulted in enhanced rates of growth and metamorphosis, and adult O. gotoi lived longer when they were provided with insect carcasses. These observations and experiments suggest that O. gotoi is a scavenger. Analyses of chlorophylls a and b and P700 in the wheat leaves grown for 8 days under illumination with white light at different intensities suggested selective formation of photosystem 1 of the photosynthesis at low light intensities. This was confirmed for the two types of chloroplasts isolated from leaves grown at light intensities of 1.1 and 240 μ W/cm2, respectively, by measuring their pigment compositions, activities of photosystems 1 and 2, and absorption and fluorescence spectra. The chloroplasts developed at the low intensity showed properties only of photosystem 1 while those developed at the high intensity showed properties of both photosystems 1 and 2. Only photosystem 1 particles were obtained by fractionation of low intensity chloroplasts by treatment with digitonin followed by centrifugation, while high intensity chloroplasts could be fractionated into photosystem-1 and photosystem-2 particles. When the leaves grown at low light intensity were illuminated with strong light, photosystem 2 was developed. The fluorescence emission spectrum of low intensity chloroplasts at 77°K showed two peaks at 685 and 734 nm, and the spectrum of high intensity chloroplasts showed three peaks at 685, 697 and 740 nm. 相似文献

1. The "indirect" thoracic muscles of adult dipterous and hymenopterous insects consist of a unique type of muscle characterized by the presence of numerous spherical, intracytoplasmic bodies termed "sarcosomes." 2. When the muscle is teased or ground, the sarcosomes are liberated as a turbid suspension of bodies ranging from 1 to 4 µ in diameter. A method is described for the isolation of sarcosomes by a simple differential centrifugation. 3. The cytochemical, chemical, and enzymatic properties of sarcosomes were examined for the purpose of appraising their relation to the cytoplasmic bodies of other tissues. 4. Fresh sarcosomes are slowly but selectively stained by the mitochondrial reagents, Janus green B and pinacyanol. Fixed sarcosomes give a positive reaction with Regaud's mitochondrial stain. 5. Chemical analyses show that approximately 29 per cent of the dry weight of sarcosomes consists of lipids and 60 per cent of protein. Microbiological assay indicates the presence of about 1 gamma of riboflavin per milligram of nitrogen. These values resemble those reported for isolated mitochondria of vertebrate liver and kidney. 6. When examined spectroscopically the sarcosomes, like the vertebrate mitochondria, show a high titer of cytochromes a, b, and c. 7. The titer of cytochrome oxidase varies systematically with the adult age of the insect. A similar relation is observed for the enzyme catalase. 8. Isolated sarcosomes show significant titers of succinoxidase, α-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase, malic dehydrogenase, and pyruvic dehydrogenase. The following dehydrogenases could not be demonstrated: xanthine, phenylalanine, glycine, lactic, choline, glutamic, and alcohol. These results are compared with those previously reported for vertebrate mitochondria. 9. In view of their manifold points of biochemical similarity, it is concluded that the sarcosomes are the mitochondria of this highly specialized muscular tissue. 相似文献
