Ideally, diurnal orb-web spiders should be able to ignore problems of insolation when siting their webs and should be able to operate such webs without the necessity of retiring into shade. Postures that minimize the surface area of the spider exposed to insolation may help to free the spider from the danger of overheating. Such postures are here described for the first time for Argiope argentata and three species of Gasteracantha . Experiments with dead Nephila clavipes show that postures described as thermoregulatory do, in fact, reduce absolute temperatures (and the rate of temperature increase) compared to normal predatory postures.
Metalic or other reflectant coloration occurs in many species of diurnal orb-web spiders. These are partly listed herein. Experiments with one such species, Argiope argentata , show that overpainting the silver parts increases both the rate of temperature increase and the absolute temperatures reached when naturally coloured and black-painted spiders are exposed to the same radiant heat sources.
It is suggested that these results on the probable thermoregulatory function of metallic coloration can provide insights into the probable habitat distributions of species whose coloration is known but whose ecology is presently unknown. The general question of adaptive coloration in spiders is discussed in the light of these results.  相似文献

Scent marking by deposition of urine, and the preputial glands, of adult, male, wild house mice, Mus mmmlus L., were studied and compared with those of an outbred domestic strain. The preputial glands of dominant wild mice were always heavier than those of subordinates. No dominance relationships could be established among the domestic mice. For study of scent marking each mouse was observed singly in a residential maze. Dominant wild mice marked more than the subordinates. The domestic mice scent-marked much less even than the subordinate wild mice. Subordinate wild mice spent less time than the dominant wild mice outside the nest; but the number of excursions outside the nest made by the subordinates resembled that of the dominants. Hence social status influenced the pattern of movements in a structured environment.  相似文献

The distribution pattern of the products of photosynthesis wasstudied in gladiolus plants (Gladiolus grandiflorus cv Eurovision)in four stages of development I, plants having a very younginflorescence still enclosed between the leaves; II, plantswith a young inflorescence just emerged from the leaves, III,plants at full bloom, IV, plants with young fruits. The first,third or sixth foliage leaf was labelled with 14CO2, and subsequentdistribution in the plant was determined Results were expressedas a percentage of translocated 14C accumulated by each partof the plant which gives a measure of its ‘sink strength’,or as ‘relative sink activity’ (RSA) which is independentof the size of the indicated organ. There are two competing sinks in the developing gladiolus—theinflorescence and the new corm. When RSA is the criterton theinflorescence constitutes the main sink irrespective of thesource leaf from the first stage until flowering. With the subsequentwilting of the flowers and fruit set RSA of the inflorescencedeclines rapidly and the new corm becomes the main sink When‘sink strength’ is the criterton it appears thatthe inflorescence acts as a very weak sink when it is youngand becomes increasingly stronger until flowering and then declinessteeply. Sink strength of the corm declines during the developmentof the inflorescence and then increases again steeply with wiltingof the flowers and fruit set. There are small differences betweenthe various source leaves. The young new corm acts as a strongsink for the lower foliage leaf and progressively weaker forupper leaves. Three species of Argiope: A. picta, A. aemula and A. reinwardti were studied at Wau, New Guinea. The stabilimenta in 548 webs of these species were classified into 18 categories, and the frequency of occurrence of each category was recorded. The data from this study are compared with previous records on the variation in the form of the devices built by spiders of the genera Argiope and Gasteracantha and related to theories about stabilimentum function.
Studies of the predatory behaviour of the three species show that this is, in general, similar to that of Argiope argentata . Data are cited to show that the spiders discriminate lepidopterans from insects of similar size. Particular attention was paid to the question of whether the species interrupt predatory sequences, after the attack phase, with a stage during which they rest at the hub of the web before transporting the prey. Unlike Argiope argentata these species interrupt a high proportion of predatory sequences that are initiated by bite/wrap attacks. This aspect of their behaviour is evaluated and discussed.  相似文献

Abstract Vespitinea gurkharum gen. et sp.n. is described from specimens reared from a bracket-fungus ( Ganoderma - Polyporaceae) from lowland rain-forest in Brunei. This striking wasp-like moth is suggested to be a Batesian mimic of species of Vespidae and Pompilidae (Hymenoptera) and the first example of this mimicry type recorded from the Tineoidea. Abdominal, eye and wing-coupling modifications suggest that it is diurnal and a behavioural mimic. The systematic position of Vespitinea is discussed with reference to biology and adult and larval morphology.  相似文献

1. Determined by landscape structure as well as dispersal‐related traits of species, connectivity influences various key aspects of population biology, ranging from population persistence to genetic structure and diversity. Here, we investigated differences in small‐scale connectivity in terms of gene flow between populations of two ecologically important invertebrates with contrasting dispersal‐related traits: an amphipod (Gammarus fossarum) with a purely aquatic life cycle and a mayfly (Baetis rhodani) with a terrestrial adult stage. 2. We used highly polymorphic markers to estimate genetic differentiation between populations of both species within a Swiss pre‐alpine catchment and compared these results to the broader‐scale genetic structure within the Rhine drainage. Landscape genetic approaches were used to test for correlations of genetic and geographical structures and in‐stream barrier effects. 3. We found overall very weak genetic structure in populations of B. rhodani. In contrast, G. fossarum showed strong genetic differentiation, even at spatial scales of a few kilometres, and a clear pattern of isolation by distance. Genetic diversity decreased from downstream towards upstream populations of G. fossarum, suggesting asymmetric gene flow. Correlation of genetic structure with landscape topography was more pronounced in the amphipod. Our study also indicates that G. fossarum might be capable of dispersing overland in headwater regions and of crossing small in‐stream barriers. 4. We speculate that differences in dispersal capacity but also habitat specialisation and potentially the extent of local adaptation could be responsible for the differences in genetic differentiation found between the two species. These results highlight the importance of taking into account dispersal‐related traits when planning management and conservation strategies.  相似文献

The uptake of lucifer yellow CH by suspension-cultured carrotcells and protoplasts has been studied by laser scanning microscopy.This fluorochrome, which does not diffuse across membranes,gradually accumulates in the cell vacuole over a period of hours.In contrast, the central vacuole of protoplasts did not showlucifer yellow fluorescence. The latter was restricted, in protoplasts,to punctate sources in the peripheral cytoplasm. Confocal opticsallowed the complexity of the vacuolar system to be dramaticallydepicted with the laser scanning microscope. Control experimentssupport the contention that lucifer yellow uptake, as in othereukaryotic systems, occurs via endocytosis. Although many studies report a difference in reproductive success between old and young birds, little is known about how, why and when productivity changes as individuals age. We examined age-dependent reproduction in two bird species that inhabit harsh tundra environments: White-tailed Ptarmigan Lagopus leucurus in alpine areas and Willow Ptarmigan Lagopus lagopus in subarctic Canada. We evaluated reproductive performance in the light of three hypotheses: constraint, restraint and selection. Using cross-sectional and longitudinal data, we observed significant age effects in seven of the eight life history and behavioural traits examined for the two species. However, the pattern of age effects variedconsiderably across life history stages; younger birds generally had smaller clutches, later laying dates and poorer spring body condition, but the nesting success did not vary with age. Brood-rearing and renesting abilities were greater for older parents. The oldest age class of White-tailed Ptarmigan showed reproductive senescence for laying date and clutch size but fledged such a large proportion of the brood that they had the highest overall production of any class. It thus appears that parental experience can compensate for reduced physical ability to produce eggs. Annual mortality rates for breeding females were U-shaped for White-tailed Ptarmigan, with higher rates for young and old birds, but mortality did not change with age in Willow Ptarmigan. Overall, the two species differed in the presence of age dependence for only two traits (renesting ability and annual survival). Age-dependent effects were generally greater for White-tailed Ptarmigan than for Willow Ptarmigan. The patterns of mortality and fecundity we observed in ptarmigan provide general support for the constraint hypothesis of reproductive performance. By examining discrete stages of reproduction, we identified the life history stages where age effects occur and propose proximate mechanisms responsible for these effects.  相似文献
