Size-correlated variations of sugar maple (Acer saccharum L.)leaf anatomy and mechanical properties were determined for twosaplings (from open and wind protected sites) to examine theeffects of chronic wind-induced mechanical disturbance on leafsize, rigidity and flexibility. Based on a total sample of 78leaves, comparisons indicated that the mean size of the opensite leaves (n =37) was smaller in every measured respect comparedwith that of the closed site leaves (n =41). Open site leaveshad, on average, smaller lamina surface area, shorter and narrowerpetioles with a smaller volume fraction of lignified tissuesthan those from the closed site. Biomechanical comparisons alsoindicated that the petioles of open site leaves were significantlyless rigid and more flexible than the petioles of closed siteleaves. Despite differences in mean leaf size and petiolar rigidityand flexibility, allometric comparisons indicated the size-dependentvariations in leaf properties were continuous across the twosites. Also, the allocation of leaf biomass with respect tostem biomass along the lengths of the two saplings was statisticallyidentical and indistinguishable from an isometric relationship.However, the smaller diametered branches of the open site saplingbore smaller and fewer leaves with less stiff and rigid petiolesthan those of the closed site sapling. The differences betweenopen and closed site leaves are interpreted to be functionallyadaptive and to indicate that chronic mechanical disturbanceof developingAcer saccharum leaves prefigures mature leaf sizeand petiole properties that have the capacity to reduce winddrag. 2-Amino (1-14C) isobutyric acid (AIB) was applied to the leaf tips of thirteen-day-old primary leaves of Zea mays L. cv. Goldprinz. Simultaneously, the leaves were treated in the basal region with solutions of kinetin (KN), abscisic acid (ABA) and mixtures of both hormones. The distribution of the radioactive material was determined after 72 h. Treatment with KN caused an accumulation of radioactive material at the point of application (KN spot). In comparison to controls, the leaf zones between the KN spot and the leaf tip contained lower amounts of radioactive material. Treatment with ABA caused a pattern of distribution opposite to that induced by KN. The ABA point of application (ABA spot) was depleted of radioactive material, whereas the leaf area between the ABA spot and the leaf tip showed enhanched levels of radioactive AIB. The effect of ABA was reduced by application of ABA and KN in equimolar amounts. The results are discussed in relation to the possible role of ABA in hormone-directed transport processes.  相似文献

Fire is a common disturbance in many ecosystems, including arid Australia. Understanding whether fauna respond in a deterministic manner towards a single end‐point, or to multiple states, is of crucial importance for conservation management. Why different taxa or assemblages display single or multiple end‐points is also important to develop a synthetic theory of succession. To examine the post‐fire changes in assemblages of spiders, we established a chronosequence study in spinifex habitat of central Western Australia. Ground‐active spiders were pitfall‐trapped over nine months in sites representing experimental fires (0 and 0.5 years post‐fire) and wildfires (3, 5, 8 and 20 years post‐fire). There were significant non‐linear changes in species richness, evenness and composition of spiders with increasing post‐fire age. For all three measures, the assemblage appeared highly deterministic, converging towards the long unburnt state. Similarity in richness, evenness and species composition to the 20‐year‐old sites all increased with increasing time since fire (3–8 years). However, experimentally burnt sites did not neatly fit this sequence. We consider two alternative hypotheses to explain this second trajectory: inertia within the system or the rapid migration and recolonization from nearby surrounding unburnt areas. Analyses indicated that half of the 179 species had significant preferences for, or were restricted to, particular post‐fire ages. This suggests that adequate pyrodiversity, both in terms of post‐fire ages and/or scale and intensity of fires, may be important for the conservation of spiders in this habitat. However, owing to the high number of singletons and low indicator values, the significance of this result for conservation management remains equivocal. Despite this, the high degree of determinism provides hope that managers can develop a good predictive understanding of post‐fire successional changes in spider assemblages in arid Australia.  相似文献

Global warming, increasing CO2 concentration, and environmental disturbances affect grassland communities throughout the world. Here, we report on variations in the C3/C4 pattern of Inner Mongolian grassland derived from soil and vegetation. Soil samples from 149 sites covering an area of approximately 250 000 km2 within Inner Mongolia, People's Republic of China were analyzed for the isotopic composition (δ13C) of soil organic carbon (SOC). The contrast in δ13C between C3 and C4 plants allowed for calculation of the C3/C4 ratio from δ13C of SOC with a two‐member mixing model, which accounted for influences of aridity and altitude on δ13C of the C3 end‐member and for changes in δ13C of atmospheric CO2. Maps were created geostatistically, and showed a substantially lower C4 abundance in soil than in recent vegetation (?10%). The difference between soil and vegetation varied regionally and was most pronounced within an E–W belt along 44°N and in a mountainous area, suggesting a spread of C4 plants toward northern latitudes (about 1°) and higher altitudes. The areas of high C4 abundance for present vegetation and SOC were well delineated by the isotherms of crossover temperature based on the climatic conditions of the respective time periods. Our study indicates that change in the patterns of C3/C4 composition in the Inner Mongolia grassland was mainly triggered by increasing temperature, which overrode the antagonistic effect of rising CO2 concentrations.  相似文献

The electric organ discharges (EODs) of five mormyrid species ( Marcusenius senegalensis , Brevimyrus niger , Petrocephalus bovei , Pollimyrus isidori , Hippopotamyrus pictus ) from different sampling sites from the Upper Volta system in West Africa were investigated. EOD waveforms were recorded at high sampling rates in order to compare signal waveform parameters of the different species from different locations. Except for H. pictus , EODs within a species differed significantly from one another in some parameters and waveform variability at least between some sampling sites. In addition, each species showed a continuous spectrum of waveform variations, all or only parts of which were found at certain localities. Although there was variability and sometimes similarities between species, the EOD waveforms were species specific. Knowing their variation spectrum, they can be used for species determination and are probably used for species recognition by the mormyrids. Similarities or differences in EOD waveform expression within a species were not related to geographical distance. By contrast, we suggest that biotic environmental factors at a given location influence the expression of EOD waveforms. These factors affect absolute measurements such as EOD duration and fast Fourier transformation peak frequency as well as the amount of variation for certain waveform parameters across species in a similar manner for a given site. Although EOD waveform might be important for the establishment of reproductive barriers between species, our results suggest that differences in waveforms may not necessarily reflect different species or speciation processes in progress.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 94 , 61–80.  相似文献

Recent studies on urotensins I and II and experiments on urophysialfunction are described. Chemical and pharmacological studies showed that: (i) The isoelectricpoints of urotensins I and II are pI 5.5 ± 0.05 and 5.9± 0.05, respectively; (ii) two active peaks of urotensinI are obtained by gel chromatography of HCl-extracted urophyseson Bio-Gel P6, one corresponding to a substance of mol wt 4000,the other, mol wt 2000; (iii) the rat-hypotensive activity ofurotensin I affects peripheral blood vessels at an undeterminedreceptor site(s) and is not mediated by cholinergic, adrenergic,or histaminergic receptors or the corresponding transmittersubstances; and (iv) urotensins I and II increase blood pressureand urine flow in the American eel (Anguilla rostrata). Urophysial content of urotensin II in the white sucker (Catostomuscommersoni) was high during about 3 months preceding spawningand was considerably lower during the remainder of the year.Pituitary content of isotocin is significantly higher in malesuckers after spawning as compared with the content before spawning.The reverse was found on urophysial content of urotensin IIin the male fish.  相似文献

Summary 1. Habitats are often connected by fluxes of energy and nutrients across their boundaries. For example, headwater streams are linked to surrounding riparian vegetation through invertebrate and leaf litter inputs, and there is evidence that consumers in downstream habitats are subsidised by resources flowing from headwater systems. However, the strength of these linkages and the manner in which potential headwater subsidies vary along climatic and disturbance gradients are unknown. 2. We quantified the downstream transport of invertebrates, organic matter and inorganic sediment from 60 fishless headwater streams in the Wenatchee River Basin located on the eastern slope of the Cascade Range in Washington, U.S.A. Streams were classified into four groups (each n = 15) based on their position within two ecological subregions (wet and dry) and the extent of past timber harvest and road development (logged and unlogged). 3. Time and ecoregion were significant for all response variables as transport varied across sampling periods, and dry ecoregion streams displayed significantly higher mean values. Logged sites also generally showed higher mean transport, but only inorganic sediment transport was significantly higher in logged sites. Both ecoregion and land‐use interacted significantly with time depending on the response variable. Differences among stream categories were driven by relatively low levels of transport in unlogged drainages of the wet ecoregion. Interestingly, unlogged dry ecoregion streams showed comparable transport rates to logged sites in the wet ecoregion. Dominance by deciduous riparian vegetation in all but unlogged streams in the wet ecoregion is a primary hypothesised mechanism determining transport dynamics in our study streams. 4. Understanding the quantity and variation of headwater subsidies across climate and disturbance gradients is needed to appreciate the significance of ecological linkages between headwaters and associated downstream habitats. This will enable the accurate assessment of resource management impacts on stream ecosystems. Predicting the consequences of natural and anthropogenic disturbances on headwater stream transport rates will require knowledge of how both local and regional factors influence these potential subsidies. Our results suggest that resources transported from headwater streams reflect both the meso‐scale land‐use surrounding these areas and the constraints imposed by the ecoregion in which they are embedded.  相似文献

Abstract Territoriality in the flesh fly Sarcophaga crassipalpis (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) is studied in the laboratory. In rectangular enclosures, male flies exhibit a lower tolerance (occupation of the same physical space) of same‐sex conspecifics than do females. In circular arenas, male flies show significantly higher levels of spatial separation among themselves (as determined from nearest neighbour analyses) than do females: males show a slight tendency towards a uniform distribution, whereas females exhibit a slight tendency towards clustering. The male spatial behaviour occurs during the photophase but not the scotophase, suggesting that visual cues are required for maintenance of inter‐individual spacing. No significant differences in male spacing behaviour occur between subjective day and subjective night in either constant dark or constant light conditions, suggesting that spatial patterning is not driven by a circadian rhythm.  相似文献

Abstract The ability of the common field grasshopper Chorthippus brunneus to discriminate between different distances under binocular and monocular stimulus conditions is investigated based upon the peering‐jump behaviour. The results show that information obtained from only one eye is sufficient for the grasshopper to determine the jump direction and distance. However, information obtained from both eyes is advantageous for relative distance determination. It is hypothesized that the motion parallax signals from the left and right eye may be summed, thus improving performance. There is no behavioural evidence of a more complex correlation of the information from the two eyes.  相似文献

Mean summer water temperatures in the Fraser River (British Columbia, Canada) have increased by ~1.5 °C since the 1950s. In recent years, record high river temperatures during spawning migrations of Fraser River sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) have been associated with high mortality events, raising concerns about long‐term viability of the numerous natal stocks faced with climate warming. In this study, the effect of freshwater thermal experience on spawning migration survival was estimated by fitting capture–recapture models to telemetry data collected for 1474 adults (captured in either the ocean or river between 2002 and 2007) from four Fraser River sockeye salmon stock‐aggregates (Chilko, Quesnel, Stellako‐Late Stuart and Adams). Survival of Adams sockeye salmon was the most impacted by warm temperatures encountered in the lower river, followed by that of Stellako‐Late Stuart and Quesnel. In contrast, survival of Chilko fish was insensitive to the encountered river temperature. In all stocks, in‐river survival of ocean‐captured sockeye salmon was higher than that of river‐captured fish and, generally, the difference was more pronounced under warm temperatures. The survival–temperature relationships for ocean‐captured fish were used to predict historic (1961–1990) and future (2010–2099) survival under simulated lower river thermal experiences for the Quesnel, Stellako‐Late Stuart and Adams stocks. A decrease of 9–16% in survival of all these stocks was predicted by the end of the century if the Fraser River continues to warm as expected. However, the decrease in future survival of Adams sockeye salmon would occur only if fish continue to enter the river abnormally early, towards warmer periods of the summer, as they have done since 1995. The survival estimates and predictions presented here are likely optimistic and emphasize the need to consider stock‐specific responses to temperature and climate warming into fisheries management and conservation strategies.  相似文献
