Hypochaeris salzmanniana DC. (Asteraceae, Lactuceae) is an endangered species on the Iberian Peninsula, known from only eight coastal populations. Most authors have treated it as a variety, subspecies or simply as a synonym of H. glabra L. On the basis of morphological and cytological characters, Talavera recently separated H. salzmanniana (2n = 8) from H. glabra (2n = 10). Material of H. salzmanniana, H. glabra and H. radicata was collected from Spain, Italy, Sicily and Tunisia in order to assess taxonomic status and population relationships. Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) analysis revealed three well-differentiated species. A close relationship between H. salzmanniana and H. radicata is also confirmed by AFLP analysis and chromosome number (2n = 8), morphology, and rDNA localization (FISH, fluorescence in situ hybridization). Hypochaeris salzmanniana and H. radicata share three fixed diagnostic AFLP fragments out of 348 fragments scored. The population structure of H. salzmanniana reveals distinct groups in southern Spain that are separated geographically. High differentiation among a western (Conil to Zahara), an intermediate (Punta Paloma and Los Algarbes) and an eastern (Algeciras and La Línea) group may reflect ancient separation. Population sizes and genetic compatibility differ greatly among populations and can be used to explain levels of within-population genetic diversity, together with recent documented loss of habitats resulting from tourist developments. Population structures of H. radicata and H. glabra show a similar geographical patterning: strongly differentiated populations from the Betic Cordillera and from the Iberian Massif, which are separated at present by the Guadalquivir river. Geological events at the end of the Tertiary (Tortonian–Messinian Miocene) might help explain patterns of differentiation in these three species of sect. In Mauritius, many of the worst invasive plant species have fleshy fruits and rely on animals for dispersal. The introduced red‐whiskered bulbul (Pycnonotus jocosus) feeds on many fleshy‐fruited species, and often moves from invaded and degraded habitats into higher quality native forests, thus potentially acting as a mediator of continued plant invasion into these areas. Furthermore, gut passage may influence seed germination. To investigate this, we fed fleshy fruits of two invasive plant species, Ligustrum robustum and Clidemia hirta, to red‐whiskered bulbuls. Gut passage times of seeds were recorded. Gut‐passed seeds were sown and their germination rate and germination success compared with that of hand‐cleaned seeds, as well as that of seeds in whole fruits. Gut passage and hand‐cleaning had significant positive effects on germination of both species. Gut‐passed seeds of both C. hirta and L. robustum germinated faster than hand‐cleaned seeds. However, for L. robustum, this was only true when compared with hand‐cleaned seeds with intact endocarp; when compared with hand‐cleaned seeds without endocarp, there was no difference. For overall germination success, there was a positive effect of gut passage for C. hirta, but not for L. robustum. For both C. hirta and L. robustum, no seeds in intact fruits geminated, suggesting that removal of pulp is essential for germination. Our results suggest that, first, the initial invasion of native forests in Mauritius may not have happened so rapidly without efficient avian seed dispersers like the red‐whiskered bulbul. Second, the bulbul is likely to be a major factor in the continued re‐invasion of C. hirta and L. robustum into weeded and restored conservation management areas.  相似文献

A technique was developed for the reliable inoculation of Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris into the cabbage host, in a manner which simulates a natural process of penetration. By introducing the inoculum into guttation droplets on the leaf margin, the bacteria are taken into the plant via the hydathodes, thereby avoiding mechanical injury to the plant and the possibility of producing artefacts. This technique, while being highly efficient, possesses several advantages over commonly used methods of inoculation.  相似文献

Fisahn, J. and Hansen, U-P. 1986. The influence of temperatureon a K+ -channel and on a carrier type transporter in Nilella—J.exp. Bot. 37. 440–460. In Nitella, the effects of temperature on membrane potentialand on resistance consist of several components. The evaluationof their associated time-constants measured in linear(ized)temperature responses at a resting potential of–120 mVprovides an approach to their identification. For changes slowerthan c. 1 s, the temperature effect on membrane potential andresistance does not originate from temperature action on theinvolved transporter, but is mediated by signals from temperaturesensitive metabolic processes. In the case of potential, theseprocesses seem to be identical to those which also mediate thelight effect: pH-regulation, and two direct signals from photosynthesis,as indicated by the similarities of the related time-constants( respectively). The temperature effect on resistance displays only one time-constant of 40 sinmost experiments. The related process is unknown. The non-coincidenceof the time-constants of the effect on potential and on resistanceimplies the involvement of a carrier-type transporter (H+-pumpor cotransporter) in the effect on potential, and of a K+channelin the effect on resistance. The K+-channel is identified bythe reversal potential of the effect on membrane potential measuredin cells depolarized or hyperpolarized by an injected electricalcurrent Under these conditions the temperature effect on resistancedominates the effect on potential.
