Plankton were sampled for 6 years in a subtropical eutrophiclake in FL, USA, and absolute and relative carbon biomass wasdetermined for bacteria, phytoplankton, heterotrophic and phototrophicnanoflagellates, ciliates, rotifers and crustacean zooplankton.We compared the results with findings from a comprehensive studyof carbon biomass partitioning in eutrophic German lakes withelucidate common patterns and differences. Similarities betweenthe temperate and subtropical systems included: similar seasonaldynamics, with maximal carbon biomass of nanoflagellates andmetazoan zooplankton in spring and phytoplankton in summer toautumn, yearly averaged carbon occurring mainly in the phytoplanktonand phytoplankton accounting for a much greater proportion ofcarbon than bacteria. There also were differences: the Floridalake had lower absolute and relative carbon biomass in crustaceanzooplankton, stronger dominance of protozoa in total grazercarbon biomass, a lower ratio of zooplankton to phytoplanktoncarbon and almost a monoculture of predation-resistant copepods(versus a relatively balanced distribution of carbon among cladocerans,copepods and rotifers in the temperate lakes). The subtropicallake also had 4-fold higher relative biomass of small filamentouscyanobacteria in its phytoplankton, which we attribute to lightlimitation. Although the Florida and German studies did notmeasure biomass of planktivorous fish, the differences observedhere are consistent with a recent hypothesis that fish predationexerts stronger top–down control on the pelagic food webin subtropical lakes than in temperate lakes of similar trophicstatus.  相似文献

Scl/Tal1 confers hemogenic competence and prevents ectopic cardiomyogenesis in embryonic endothelium by unknown mechanisms. We discovered that Scl binds to hematopoietic and cardiac enhancers that become epigenetically primed in multipotent cardiovascular mesoderm, to regulate the divergence of hematopoietic and cardiac lineages. Scl does not act as a pioneer factor but rather exploits a pre‐established epigenetic landscape. As the blood lineage emerges, Scl binding and active epigenetic modifications are sustained in hematopoietic enhancers, whereas cardiac enhancers are decommissioned by removal of active epigenetic marks. Our data suggest that, rather than recruiting corepressors to enhancers, Scl prevents ectopic cardiogenesis by occupying enhancers that cardiac factors, such as Gata4 and Hand1, use for gene activation. Although hematopoietic Gata factors bind with Scl to both activated and repressed genes, they are dispensable for cardiac repression, but necessary for activating genes that enable hematopoietic stem/progenitor cell development. These results suggest that a unique subset of enhancers in lineage‐specific genes that are accessible for regulators of opposing fates during the time of the fate decision provide a platform where the divergence of mutually exclusive fates is orchestrated.  相似文献

1. Seasonal dynamics of the exotic Daphnia lumholtzii and native macro-zooplankton species were studied for 2 years in six inter-connected lakes in Florida, U.S.A. The lakes ranged widely in pH, colour and trophic status, and were dominated by copepods.
2. All six lakes contained both D. lumholtzii and the native D. ambigua , but the two species did not overlap in time. D. ambigua was dominant in autumn–spring, coinciding with lower water temperature, higher transparency and lower nutrient and chlorophyll a (Chl a ) concentrations than in summer, when D. lumholtzii was dominant.
3. Based on the field observations, temperature optima were 24 °C for D. ambigua and 29 °C for D. lumholtzii , suggesting that temperature plays a role in determining dominance among the daphnids of subtropical Florida lakes.
4.  D. lumholtzii has not displaced native cladocerans but occupies a 'vacant' seasonal niche, unexploited due to the inability of native taxa to tolerate high temperature. Furthermore, D. lumholtzii did not significantly alter algal–zooplankton interactions. There was evidence of top–down control by grazing, but it was primarily attributable to the native taxa.  相似文献

The role of light and nutrient availability in controlling theabundance and structure of phytoplankton populations was studiedin Lake Okeechobee, a large eutrophic lake in south florida,USA. Measurement of selected environmental parameters at samplingsites within four ecologically distinct regions of the lakewere combined with direct experimental determinations of limitinglevels of light and nutrients for phytoplankton growth to determinespatial and temporal variations in the relative roles of theselimiting factors. Estimated mean light availability in the mixedlayer, Im, was significantly lower in the turbid central regionof the lake than in other regions. Correlations between Im andphytoplankton standing crops led to the conclusion that lowlight availability in the central region of the lake, and toa lesser extent in other areas, restricts phytoplankton standingcrops to levels below the potential provided by the nutrientsavailable. The results of the irradiance-growth experimentsconfirmed the conclusions of the correlation analyses that phytoplanktongrowth is restricted by the levels of light availability experiencedduring the winter and spring in the central region of the lake.Bioassays indicated that nitrogen was the most frequently limitingnutrient for phytoplankton growth. High rates of nitrogen fixationwere frequently observed in the lake, along with correspondinglyhigh abundances of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria and nitrogenfixation activity. Elevated concentrations of soluble inorganicnitrogen appeared to suppress both nitrogen fixation and therelative abundance of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria.  相似文献

1. Variations in the relative biovolumes of dominant cyanobacterial taxa were evaluated in the context of environmental conditions using canonical correlation analysis (CCorrA) and Redundancy Analysis (RDA). The objective was to test a conceptual model in which underwater irradiance determines dominance by bloom-forming (high light adapted) or non-blooming (low light adapted) taxa. 2. The data set consisted of 404 contiguous observations, collected over a 3-year period at eight pelagic sites, in shallow Lake Okeechobee, Florida, U.S.A. Data included species biovolumes, total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), dissolved oxygen (DO) and chlorophyll a concentrations, as well as two indices: underwater irradiance (Secchi depth) and the ratio of Secchi:total depth. 3. The first environmental canonical variable was strongly correlated with the two light-related indices, and negatively correlated with TP. This reflects the predominant role of resuspended P-rich lake sediments in controlling underwater irradiance in the shallow lake. The first species canonical variable displayed a strong negative correlation with Lyngbya limnetica and L. contorta, and positive correlations with Anabaena circinalis, Aphanizomenon flos aquae and Microcystis spp. The results support the conceptual model; the first pair of canonical variables explained 55% of the variation in the species–environmental data set. RDA results provided further support for the hypothesis that irradiance was the major force controlling community structure. 4. One unexpected result was a positive association between Oscillatoria spp. dominance and indicators of high irradiance. This conflicts with past research indicating that Oscillatoria is a low light adapted taxon, and the finding that it is the most abundant taxon in Lake Okeechobee. This may reflect the fact that the two Lyngbya taxa were more strongly associated with low light conditions than Oscillatoria. CCorrA results indicated that Oscillatoria densities are strongly controlled by water temperature. There is a need for more detailed studies of cyanobacteria ecophysiology in order to explain fully the seasonality of phytoplankton in this and other shallow subtropical lakes.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Indirect immunofluorescence performed using sections of actively growing maize root apices fixed and then embedded in low-melting-point Steedman's wax has proved efficient in revealing the arrangements and reorganizations of motility-related cytoskeletal elements which are associated with root cell development and tissue differentiation. This powerful, yet relatively simple, technique shows that specific rearrangements of both microtubular (MT) and actin microfilament (MF) arrays occur in cells as they leave the meristem and traverse the transitional region interpolated between meristem and elongation region. Cytoskeletal and growth analyses have identified the transition zone as critical for both cell and root development; it is in this zone that cell growth is channelled, by the cytoskeleton, into a strictly polarized mode which enables root tips to extend rapidly through the soil in search of water and nutrients. An integrated cytoskeletal network is crucial for both the cytomorphogenesis of individual cells and the overall morphogenesis of the plant body. The latter process can be viewed as a reflection of the tight control which cytoskeletal networks exert not only over cell division planes in the cells within meristematic apices but also over the orientation of cell growth in the meristem and elsewhere. Endoplasmic MTs interconnecting the plasma membrane with the nucleus are suggested to be involved in cell division control; they may also act as a two-way cytoskeletal communication channel for signals passing to and fro between the extracellular environment and the genome. Moreover, the dynamism of endoplasmic MTs exerts direct effects on chromatin structure and the accompanying nuclear architecture and hence can help exert a cellular level of control over cell growth and cell cycle progression. Because the inherent dynamic instability of MTs depends on the concentration of tubulin dimers within the cytoplasm, we propose that when asymmetric cell division occurs, it will result in two daughter cells which differ in the turnover rates of their MTs. This phenomenon could be responsible for different cell fates of daughter plant cells produced by such cell divisions.  相似文献

Current guidance on sourcing native plants to support ecosystem function focuses on the high risk of failure when unsuitable material is used in ecological restoration. However, there is growing recognition that risks may be lower and rewards higher at highly disturbed sites isolated from remnant populations, especially when considering support for pollinators, wildlife, and other ecosystem functions. We developed the first decision support tool using expert opinion to assess suitability of different native plant sources, including horticultural cultivars, in two different planting contexts. We assessed the suitability of 761 sources for 72 commonly sold native species in two different planting contexts (small, isolated, highly disturbed sites vs. large, undisturbed sites near remnant populations). Information on genetic and adaptive backgrounds of sources was strikingly lacking, forcing us to exclude one‐third of sources from our assessment. While only 3% of cultivars received high suitability scores for use in large, undisturbed sites near remnant populations, 52% received high suitability scores in small, isolated, highly disturbed sites. However, nearly 25% of cultivars had floral or leaf traits that differed from wild plants in ways that may compromise their ability to support pollinators and other wildlife. Forbs and cultivars lacking genetic diversity and source information were most likely to have altered traits. We recommend that native plant breeders and sellers work together to ensure ecosystem function, adaptation, and diversity information is available to consumers, that consumers request this information to drive demand, and that researchers further investigate how context influences risks and benefits of different sources.  相似文献
