One of the classic examples of faunal turnover in the fossil record is the Miocene transition from faunas dominated by anchitheriine horses with low-crowned molar teeth to faunas with hipparionine horses characterized by high-crowned teeth. The spread of hipparionine horses is associated with increased seasonality and the expansion of open habitats. It is generally accepted that anchitheriine horses did not display an evolutionary increase in tooth crown height prior to their extinction. Nevertheless, to test whether anchitheriines showed any changes interpretable as adaptation to local conditions, we analyzed molar teeth from multiple populations of Anchitherium in three dimensions. Our results show differences in tooth morphology that suggest incipient hypsodonty in Spain, the first region experiencing increasingly arid conditions in the early Miocene of Europe. Furthermore, analyses of tooth wear show that Spanish specimens cluster with present ungulates that eat foliage together with grasses and shrubs, whereas German specimens cluster with present-day ungulates that eat mostly foliage. Taken together, even a taxon such as Anchitherium , with a long and successful history of forest adaptation, did respond to regional environmental changes in an adaptive manner. 相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that activation of angiotensin type 2 (AT(2)) receptors, by both exogenous and endogenous ANG II, modulates neurally mediated vasoconstriction in the renal cortical and medullary circulations. Under control conditions in pentobarbital-anesthetized rabbits, electrical stimulation of the renal nerves (RNS; 0.5-8 Hz) reduced renal blood flow (RBF; -88 +/- 3% at 8 Hz) and cortical perfusion (CBF; -92 +/- 2% at 8 Hz) more than medullary perfusion (MBF; -67 +/- 6% at 8 Hz). Renal arterial infusion of ANG II, at a dose titrated to reduce RBF by approximately 40-50% (5-50 ng.kg(-1).min(-1)) blunted responses of MBF to RNS, without significantly affecting responses of RBF or CBF. Subsequent administration of PD123319 (1 mg/kg plus 1 mg.kg(-1).h(-1)) during continued renal arterial infusion of ANG II did not significantly affect responses of RBF or CBF to RNS but enhanced responses of MBF, so that they were similar to those observed under control conditions. In contrast, administration of PD123319 alone blunted responses of CBF and MBF to RNS. Subsequent renal arterial infusion of ANG II in PD123319-pretreated rabbits restored CBF responses to RNS back to control levels. In contrast, ANG II infusion in PD123319-pretreated rabbits did not alter MBF responses to RNS. These data indicate that exogenous ANG II can blunt neurally mediated vasoconstriction in the medullary circulation through activation of AT(2) receptors. However, AT(2)-receptor activation by endogenous ANG II appears to enhance neurally mediated vasoconstriction in both the cortical and medullary circulations. 相似文献

The effect of irradiance on leaf construction costs, chemical composition, and on the payback time of leaves was investigated. To enable more generalized conclusions, three different systems were studied: top and the most-shaded leaves of 10 adult tree species in a European mixed forest, top leaves of sub-dominant trees of two evergreen species growing in small gaps or below the canopy in an Amazonian rainforest, and plants of six herbaceous and four woody species grown hydroponically at low or high irradiance in growth cabinets. Daily photon irradiance varied 3-6-fold between low- and high-light leaves. Specific leaf area (SLA) was 30-130% higher at low light. Construction costs, on the other hand, were 1-5% lower for low-irradiance leaves, mainly because low-irradiance leaves had lower concentrations of soluble phenolics. Photosynthetic capacity and respiration, expressed per unit leaf mass, were hardly different for the low- and high-light leaves. Estimates of payback times of the high-irradiance leaves ranged from 2-4 d in the growth cabinets, to 15-20 d for the adult tree species in the European forest. Low-irradiance leaves had payback times that were 2-3 times larger, ranging from 4 d in the growth cabinets to 20-80 d at the most shaded part of the canopy of the mixed forest. In all cases, estimated payback times were less than half the life span of the leaves, suggesting that even at time-integrated irradiances lower than 5% of the total seasonal value, investment in leaves is still fruitful from a carbon-economy point of view. A sensitivity analysis showed that increased SLA of low-irradiance leaves was the main factor constraining payback times. Acclimation in the other five factors determining payback time, namely construction costs, photosynthetic capacity per unit leaf mass, respiration per unit leaf mass, apparent quantum yield, and curvature of the photosynthetic light-response-curve, were unimportant when the observed variation in each factor was examined. 相似文献

The most crucial stage in the dynamics of virus infections is the mode of virus transmission. In general, transmission of viruses can occur through two pathways: horizontal and vertical transmission. In horizontal transmission, viruses are transmitted among individuals of the same generation, while vertical transmission occurs from mothers to their offspring. Because of its highly organized social structure and crowded population density, the honey bee colony represents a risky environment for the spread of disease infection. Like other plant and animal viruses, bee viruses use different survival strategies, including utilization of both horizontal and vertical routes, to transmit and maintain levels in a host population. In this review, we explore the current knowledge about the honey bee viruses and transmission routes of bee viruses. RIFIN proteins belong to the largest Plasmodium falciparum multicopy family of variant surface antigens (VSA) expressed by infected erythrocytes. VSA antibodies have been shown to be associated with protection against malaria. Here, antibody subclass responses to a recombinant RIFIN protein (RIF-29) in 116 Ghanaian children were determined by ELISA to investigate the relationship between severe malaria and anti-RIF-29 antibodies. The study group was composed of 23 children diagnosed exclusively for cerebral malaria and 35 children who had non-cerebral severe malaria. The remaining 58 individuals were age-, gender- and area-matched asymptomatic controls. The finding that IgG1 and IgG3 responses predominated in severe malaria patients compared to matched controls suggests that these antibodies are not protective, but are most probably induced by a current infection, an observation substantiated by the equally high reactivity to both recombinant RIF-29 protein and to P. falciparum crude lysate proteins. The exclusive detection of IgG2 and IgG4 antibodies to RIF-29 protein only in cerebral malaria children brings to mind the possibility that these antibodies are pathogenic. This is a new finding that may go some way towards explaining why these children are at risk of developing the life-threatening form of cerebral malaria. 相似文献

RNA-protein interactions are important in many biological contexts. Identification of the networks that connect regulatory proteins to one another and to the mRNAs they control is a critical need. Here, we use a yeast three-hybrid screening approach to identify RNAs that bind a known RNA regulatory protein, the Saccharomyces cerevisiae PUF protein, Mpt5p. The assay selects RNAs that bind in vivo using simple phenotypes and reporter genes. It enables rapid analyses of the affinity and specificity of the interaction. We show that the method identifies mRNAs that are genuinely regulated by the protein in vivo, and that it complements biochemical strategies, yielding a set of mRNAs that overlap with, but are distinct from, those obtained by biochemical means. The approach we describe facilitates construction of protein-RNA linkage maps. 相似文献
