Objectives: We investigated the impact of serum sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) on thrombin generation (TG) in women according to hormonal contraception.

Patients and methods: A cross-sectional study of SHBG and TG measured via calibrated automated thrombography was conducted in 150 healthy women, including 75 users of combined oral contraceptives (COC), 22 users of progestin-only contraceptives (POC) and 53 nonusers.

Results: COC but not POC-users had significantly higher SHBG levels compared with nonusers. In hormonal contraceptive users, SHBG was positively associated with both activated protein C (APC) resistance and baseline TG, and protein S and prothrombin were important mediators.

Conclusion: These data provide further evidence that SHBG may be used as a biomarker in assessing prothrombotic profile of hormonal contraception.  相似文献

The RNA chaperone Hfq is a key regulator of the function of small RNAs (sRNAs). Hfq has been shown to facilitate sRNAs binding to target mRNAs and to directly regulate translation through the action of sRNAs. Here, we present evidence that Hfq acts as the repressor of cirA mRNA translation in the absence of sRNA. Hfq binding to cirA prevents translation initiation, which correlates with cirA mRNA instability. In contrast, RyhB pairing to cirA mRNA promotes changes in RNA structure that displace Hfq, thereby allowing efficient translation as well as mRNA stabilization. Because CirA is a receptor for the antibiotic colicin Ia, in addition to acting as an Fur (Ferric Uptake Regulator)‐regulated siderophore transporter, translational activation of cirA mRNA by RyhB promotes colicin sensitivity under conditions of iron starvation. Altogether, these results indicate that Fur and RyhB modulate an unexpected feed‐forward loop mechanism related to iron physiology and colicin sensitivity.  相似文献

We contrast two classes of choice processes, those assuming time-consuming comparisons and those where stimuli for each option act independently, competing for expression by cross censorship. The Sequential Choice Model (SCM) belongs in the latter category, and has received empirical support in several procedures involving deterministic alternatives. Here we test this model in risky choices. In two treatments, each with five conditions, European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) faced choices between options with unpredictable outcomes and risk-free alternatives. In the delay treatment the five conditions involved choices between a variable option offering two equiprobable delays to reward and a fixed option with delay differing between conditions. The amount treatment was structurally similar, but amount of reward rather than delay was manipulated. As assumed (and required) by the SCM, latency to respond in no-choice trials reflected each option's richness with respect to the background alternatives, and, crucially, preferences in simultaneous choices were predictable from latencies to each option in forced trials. However, we did not detect reliable differences in response times between forced and choice trials, neither the lengthening expected from evaluation models nor the shortening expected from the SCM.  相似文献

The Drosophila lymph gland (LG) is a model system for studying hematopoiesis and blood cell homeostasis. Here, we investigated the patterns of division and differentiation of pro-hemocytes in normal developmental conditions and response to wasp parasitism, by combining lineage analyses and molecular markers for each of the three hemocyte types. Our results show that the embryonic LG contains primordial hematopoietic cells which actively divide to give rise to a pool of pro-hemocytes. We found no evidence for the existence of bona fide stem cells and rather suggest that Drosophila pro-hemocytes are regulated as a group of cells, rather than individual stem cells. The fate-restriction of plasmatocyte and crystal cell progenitors occurs between the end of embryogenesis and the end of the first larval instar, while Notch activity is required for the differentiation of crystal cells in third instar larvae only. Upon parasitism, lamellocyte differentiation prevents crystal cell differentiation and lowers plasmatocyte production. We also found that a new population of intermediate progenitors appears at the onset of hemocyte differentiation and accounts for the increasing number of differentiated hemocytes in the third larval instar. These findings provide a new framework to identify parameters of developmental plasticity of the Drosophila lymph gland and hemocyte homeostasis in physiological conditions and in response to immunological cues.  相似文献

Gill monogeneans from the brownspotted grouper Epinephelus chlorostigma (Val.) collected in deep water off the coral barrier reef of New Caledonia, South Pacific, comprise seven species. These include the ancyrocephalid Haliotrema sp., the capsalid Allobenedenia cf. epinepheli Yamaguti, 1968, and five diplectanids, namely Pseudorhabdosynochus epinepheli (Yamaguti, 1938), reported in a previous paper, P. cyanopodus Sigura & Justine, 2008 and P. podocyanus Sigura & Justine, 2008, two species originally described from E. cyanopodus Richardson, P. stigmosus n. sp., P. exoticoides n. sp. and Diplectanum femineum n. sp. P. stigmosus is characterised by a sclerotised vagina with a straight primary canal, large ovoid primary chamber and spherical secondary chamber. P. exoticoides is a highly aberrant species, with a thick-walled male quadriloculate organ and a discoid sclerotised vagina with an exceptional structure. Interestingly, P. exoticoides resembles P. exoticus Sigura & Justine, 2008, a species from E. cyanopodus, and P. stigmosus resembles P. cyanopodus and P. podocyanus, also both from E. cyanopodus, suggesting close relationships between the diplectanid faunae of these two fish species. D. femineum belongs to a group of diplectanids, provisionally classified as ‘Diplectanum’ Diesing, 1858, which all share a small funnel-shaped male copulatory organ. In contrast to other members of this group which have no sclerotised vagina, D. femineum has a sclerotised vagina with the same organisation as those of species of Pseudorhabdosynochus Yamaguti, 1958. This suggests that the species of ‘Diplectanum’ from groupers are closer to Pseudorhabdosynochus than suggested by the structure of the male organs.  相似文献

Summry— Spermatogenesis in the primitive marine nematode Sphaerolaimus hirsutus (Chromadoria, Sphaerolaimidae) was investigated by examining the ultrastructure and cytochemistry. Spermatozoa are lenticular cells of about 15 μm in diameter and are devoid of flagellum and acrosome as in other nematodes. In spermatocytes, dictyosomes produced transient structures, the fibrous body-membranous organelle complexes (FB-MO). In spermatids, the FBs were arranged as cartwheel spokes, with the FBs in the centre and the MOs at the periphery. The FBs were first made up of parallel fibres and surrounded by a membrane, then, in a later stage, showed a dense central structure with a surrounding vermiculate region and were devoid of membrane. The FBs contain actin as shown by immunofluorescence using a monoclonal anti-actin antibody and by affinity cytochemistry using fluorescent phalloidin. MOs contained mainly F-actin as shown by their labelling by phalloidin. In spermatozoa, the MOs were no longer peripheral but arranged on a ring in the central region of the cell and the FBs disappeared to form the cytoskeleton of the cell outer region. It was assumed, by analogy with the ultrastructure of other nematodes, that this cytoskeleton was made up of major-sperm-protein (MSP). Labelling of spermatids of Caenorhabditis elegans also revealed the presence of actin, but cells and actin spots were very can be distinguished. In the few species in which it has been studied (C elegans and Ascaris suum), MSP is thought to constitute in spermatozoa a motile cytoskeleton excluding the presence of actin. However, the present study of Sphaerolaimus shows that the actin cytoskeleton is present during nematode spermiogenesis.  相似文献

We describe a fight between two female plains zebra (Equus burchelli). Plains zebra are ungulates with stable social groups known as harems. Female aggression rarely escalates to the level we observed. The fight immediately followed the birth of a foal to one of the females. The initiating female repeatedly kicked and bit the mother, who reacted aggressively and by guarding her foal. We present hypotheses on the causes underlying this rare event.  相似文献
