Sexual generations in cyclical parthenogens are typically separated by multiple generations of clonal reproduction. In contrast to sexual reproduction, during parthenogenesis the genome of the parent is passed on to the offspring as a unit. The absence of recombination during parthenogenesis leads to differences in the action of natural selection in the two reproductive phases. In addition, since recombination is a sampling process, random genetic drift is potentially more important in sexual reproduction than in parthenogenesis. A recent development in the study of rotifer population genetics is the use of microsatellites to characterize natural populations. Microsatellites are selectively neutral, show patterns of Mendelian inheritance and tend to be much more variable than allozymes. An advantage over allozymes is that microsatellite DNA can be cloned with PCR and thus multiple loci can be assayed from a single individual. We use a new computer model in this paper to investigate the response of selectively active and selectively neutral genes to evolutionary forces during cyclical parthenogenesis. Selectively active alleles may respond differently to selection in the parthenogenetic and sexual phases of cyclical parthenogenesis. Even when strong clonal selection is acting on loci associated with adaptation, the view that emerges with microsatellites may be one of Hardy-Weinberg and linkage equilibrium. Thus studies using selectively neutral loci may fail to detect clonal selection even when it is an important feature of the rotifer population's adaptive structure.  相似文献

Density-dependent dispersal in host-parasitoid assemblages   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Most spatial population models assume constant rates of dispersal. However, in a given community, dispersal may not only depend on the density of conspecifics, i.e. density‐dependent dispersal, but also on the density of other species, a phenomenon we term ‘community‐dependent dispersal’. We co‐vary the densities of both the beetle host Callosobruchus chinensis and its parasitoid wasp, Anisopteromalus calandrae, in a laboratory study and record the proportions of each species that disperse within a two‐hour period. The parasitoid in these systems exhibits community‐dependent dispersal – dispersing more frequently when parasitoid density is high and larval host density is low. This supported our prediction that individuals should disperse according to competition for available resources. However, in this study the host's dispersal was independent of density. We suggest that this may be due to less intense selection acting on host dispersal strategies than on the parasitoid. We consider some possible consequences of community‐dependent dispersal for a number of spatial population processes. A well‐known host‐parasitoid metapopulation model is expanded so that it includes a greater range of dispersal functions. When the model is parameterised with the parasitoid community‐dependent dispersal function observed in the empirical study, similar population dynamics are obtained as when fixed‐rate dispersal functions are applied. The importance of dispersal functions for invasions of both competitive and host‐parasitoid systems is also considered. The model results demonstrate that understanding how individuals disperse in response to different species’ population densities is important in determining the rate of spread of an invasion. We suggest that more empirical studies are needed to establish what determines dispersal rate and distance in a range of species, combined with theoretical studies investigating the role of the dispersal function in determining spatial population processes.  相似文献

HgCl2 was used at up to 10 mg l–1 as an elicitor of phytoalexins in sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam. cv Centennial) cell suspension cultures. Maximum stimulation of a coumarin compound was after one day of exposure using 1 mg HgCl2 l–1. The compound was identified by HPLC and GC-MS analyses as 7-hydroxycoumarin (umbelliferone).  相似文献

Endophytic filamentous actinobacteria were isolated from surface-sterilized roots of wheat plants. Endophytic colonization of germinating wheat seed was examined using one of these endophytes, Streptomyces sp. strain EN27, tagged with the egfp gene. Endophytic colonization was observed from a very early stage of plant development with colonization of the embryo, endosperm, and emerging radicle.  相似文献

Summary. Oligonucleotide primers were designed to discriminate between the Gp-9B and Gp-9b alleles found in monogyne and polygyne colonies of fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren. Primers specific for the Gp-9B allele produced a 517 bp amplicon and primers specific for Gp-9b allele produced a 423 bp amplicon. When both sets of primers were multiplexed, homozygous monogyne ants produced a single 517 bp amplicon (specific for Gp-9B), whereas heterozygous polygyne ants produced one 517 bp amplicon and one 423 bp amplicon (specific for Gp-9B and Gp-9b, respectively) which allowed the Gp-9 alleles to be discerned in a single reaction. This method was tested on ants from 20 monogyne colonies and 20 polygyne colonies and was 100% accurate in discriminating the two forms.  相似文献

There is increasing public, governmental and commercial interest in the welfare of intensively farmed fish and stocking density has been highlighted as an area of particular concern. Here we draw scientific attention and debate to this emerging research field by reviewing the evidence for effects of density on rainbow trout. Although no explicit reference to ‘welfare’ has been made, there are 43 studies which have examined the effects of density on production and physiological parameters of rainbow trout. Increasing stocking density does not appear to cause prolonged crowding stress in rainbow trout. However, commonly reported effects of increasing density are reductions in food conversion efficiency, nutritional condition and growth, and an increase in fin erosion. Such changes are indicative of a reduced welfare status—although the magnitude of the effects has tended to be dependent upon study‐specific conditions. Systematic observations on large scale commercial farms are therefore required, rather than extrapolation of these mainly small‐scale experimental findings. There is dispute as to the cause of the observed effects of increasing density, with water quality deterioration and/or an increase in aggressive behaviour being variously proposed. Both causes can theoretically generate the observed effects of increasing density, and the relative contribution of the two causes may depend upon the specific conditions. However, documentation of the relationship between density and the effects of aggressive behaviour at relevant commercial densities is lacking. Consequently only inferential evidence exists that aggressive behaviour generates the observed effects of increasing density, whereas there is direct experimental evidence that water quality degradation is responsible. Nevertheless, there are contradictory recommendations in the literature for key water quality parameters to ensure adequate welfare status. The potential for welfare to be detrimentally affected by non‐aggressive behavioural interactions (abrasion, collision, obstruction) and low densities (due to excessive aggressive behaviour and a poor feeding response) have been largely overlooked. Legislation directly limiting stocking density is likely to be unworkable, and a more practical option might be to prescribe acceptable levels of water quality, health, nutritional condition and behavioural indicators.  相似文献

Technological computation is entering the quantum realm, focusing attention on biomolecular information processing systems such as proteins, as presaged by the work of Michael Conrad. Protein conformational dynamics and pharmacological evidence suggest that protein conformational states-fundamental information units ('bits') in biological systems-are governed by quantum events, and are thus perhaps akin to quantum bits ('qubits') as utilized in quantum computation. 'Real time' dynamic activities within cells are regulated by the cell cytoskeleton, particularly microtubules (MTs) which are cylindrical lattice polymers of the protein tubulin. Recent evidence shows signaling, communication and conductivity in MTs, and theoretical models have predicted both classical and quantum information processing in MTs. In this paper we show conduction pathways for electron mobility and possible quantum tunneling and superconductivity among aromatic amino acids in tubulins. The pathways within tubulin match helical patterns in the microtubule lattice structure, which lend themselves to topological quantum effects resistant to decoherence. The Penrose-Hameroff 'Orch OR' model of consciousness is reviewed as an example of the possible utility of quantum computation in MTs.  相似文献

Abstract Observations of the large earth bumblebee, Bombus terrestris (L.), in native vegetation were collated to determine the extent to which this exotic species has invaded Tasmanian native vegetation during the first 9 years after its introduction. The range of B. terrestris now encompasses all of Tasmania's major vegetation types, altitudes from sea level to 1260m a.s.L, and the entire breadth of annual precipitation in the state from more than 3200 mm to less than 600 mm. Observations of workers carrying pollen, together with the presence of large numbers of bumblebees at many localities across this range indicate that colonies are frequently established in native vegetation. Evidence that colonies are often successful was obtained from repeated observations of the species during more than 1 year at particular sites. Unequivocal evidence of colonies was obtained from six National Parks, including four of the five in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area (WHA). Indeed, the species has been present in the WHA for at least as long as it has in the city of Hobart, where it was first recorded. In southwestern Tasmania, evidence of colonies was obtained up to 40km from gardens, 61 km from small towns and 93 km from large towns. Hence, contrary to previous suggestions, the species is established in the most remote parts of Tasmania and is not dependent on introduced garden plants. Given their strong record of invasion, it is likely that B. terrestris will form feral populations on the mainland of Australia and in many other parts of the world if introduced. Because of their likely negative impacts on native animals and plants, and potential to enhance seed production in weeds, the spread of bumblebees should be avoided.  相似文献
