We used data on loud duetted and solo songs collected from one habituated polygynous group of black‐crested gibbons (Nomascus concolor jingdongensis) on Mt. Wuliang, Yunnan, to test several hypotheses about the functions of these songs. The major functions proposed for loud gibbon songs include resource defense, mate defense, pairbonding, group cohesion and mate attraction. Duet bouts are generally initiated by adult males, who select the highest trees near to ridges or on steep slopes as singing trees. Such trees facilitate voice transmission and inter‐group communication. Singing trees tended to be located near important food patches and sleeping sites, which supports the resource defense hypothesis. The adult male and two adult females always sang interactively, alternating male phrases with the females' stereotyped great calls, to produce the duets, and females rarely produced great calls if they were more than 30 m from the male. The two females usually produced great calls synchronously during the duet, especially when they were close together. These features support both the mate defense and pairbonding hypotheses. The number of great calls and their degree of synchrony transmit information about spatial relationships and possibly pairbond strength to members to neighboring groups and floating animals. During or after the duet bouts, the adult females and juvenile moved toward to the adult male; and group members maintained a close spatial relationship, which supports the group cohesion hypothesis. Other incidents observed suggest a mate competition role for duets. The adult male always sang when the females started duetting with the subadult male. The subadult male sang solo bouts, but they were not more frequent or longer than bouts initiated by the adult male. Although mate attraction is the likely function of subadult solos, it was not convincingly demonstrated. In conclusion, all hypotheses concerning the function of singing are supported by at least some of the data, and none can be excluded. Am. J. Primatol. 71:539–547, 2009. © 2009 Wiley‐Liss, Inc. 相似文献

Background
Influenza H7N9 and H1N1pdm can cause severe human infections. It is important to investigate the distinguishing clinical features between these two diseases. Several studies have compared the differences in general, however, age and gender adjusted comparisons may be more useful and informative to the health professionals. Methods
A total of 184 severe H1N1pdm patients and 37 severe H7N9 patients from Jiangsu Province were included in this analysis to perform age and gender adjusted comparison of clinical features. Results
After adjusting age and gender, no significant differences in chronic medical conditions or treatment were found between severely ill patients with H7N9 and H1N1pdm. Severely ill patients with H7N9 had significantly longer interval from onset of illness to neuraminidase inhibitor treatment and to death. They were more likely to have complications such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), liver and renal dysfunctions, and had a significantly higher risk of death. Conclusion
Our results suggests that age and gender should be adjusted as important confounding factors when comparing the clinical features between severe H7N9 and H1N1pdm patients to avoid any misunderstanding regarding the differences between these two diseases particularly in terms of clinical severity and prognosis. 相似文献83.

PHR protein family consists of C. elegan Rpm-1/Drosophila Highwire/Zebrafish Esrom/Mouse Phr-1/Human Pam. Esrom is required for correct neurites exiting the paused state at intermediate targets as well as pteridine synthesis. This study reports the identification and characterization of two novel Esrom splice variants, named splice variants 2 (splicing out 5′ 24 bp of exon 17) and 3 (splicing out 5′ 24 bp of exons 17 and 18). Polypeptides encoded by 5′ 24 bp of exons 17 and 18 are part of basic amino-acid-rich region inside Esrom RCC1-like domain (RLD). These two splice variants maintain the whole protein reading frame and alternative exons usage patterns are conserved with mammal. At different developmental stages and adult zebrafish tissues, abundances of these splice variants are different. Importantly, by yeast two-hybrid screen and confocal colocalization analysis, it was found that alternative splicing of exon 18 regulates Esrom RLD interaction with kinesin family member 22 and G protein beta-subunit 1. Taken together, these results suggest that Esrom RLD functions are regulated by alternative splicing at temporal and spatial-specific manner. 相似文献

The symbiosis between legumes and rhizobia results in the development of a new plant organ, the nodule. A role for polar auxin
transport in nodule development in Medicago truncatula has been demonstrated using molecular genetic tools. The expression of a DR5::GUS auxin-responsive promoter in uninoculated
M. truncatula roots mirrored that reported in Arabidopsis, and expression of the construct in nodulating roots confirmed results reported in white clover. The localization of a root-specific
PIN protein (MtPIN2) in normal roots, developing lateral roots and nodules provided the first evidence that a PIN protein is expressed in
nodules. Reduced levels of MtPIN2, MtPIN3, and MtPIN4 mRNAs via RNA interference demonstrated that plants with reduced expression of various MtPINs display a reduced number of
nodules. The reported results show that in M. truncatula, PIN proteins play an important role in nodule development, and that nodules and lateral roots share some early auxin responses
in common, but they rapidly differentiate with respect to auxin and MtPIN2 protein distribution. 相似文献

Ladybirds of the cosmopolitan tribe Chilocorini prey mainly on coccids and include several important biocontrol agents. The phylogenetic relationships of Chilocorini are poorly known. In this paper, we provide a phylogenetic reconstruction of Chilocorini containing all 27 genera based on five molecular markers and 86 adult morphological characters. Morphological character states were mapped on the combined data tree from Bayesian inference to analyse morphological traits of each genus. Sixteen morphological characters were selected to reconstruct the ancestral states using maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood methods. Divergence times were estimated based on the relaxed molecular clock approach. Our results indicate that Chilocorini, excluding Chilocorellus Miyatake, is monophyletic and closely related to Plotinini. The crown group Chilocorini was estimated to date back to the Middle Cretaceous. Anisorcus Crotch, Egius Mulsant, Phaenochilus Weise and Simmondsius Ahmad & Ghani are synonymized here with Chilocorus Leach ( syn.n. ). The genus Chilocorellus is excluded from Chilocorini. The split of current genera was estimated to have occurred during the Middle Paleogene to Late Paleogene. 相似文献

Striatal‐enriched tyrosine phosphatase (STEP) is an important regulator of neuronal synaptic plasticity, and its abnormal level or activity contributes to cognitive disorders. One crucial downstream effector and direct substrate of STEP is extracellular signal‐regulated protein kinase (ERK), which has important functions in spine stabilisation and action potential transmission. The inhibition of STEP activity toward phospho‐ERK has the potential to treat neuronal diseases, but the detailed mechanism underlying the dephosphorylation of phospho‐ERK by STEP is not known. Therefore, we examined STEP activity toward para‐nitrophenyl phosphate, phospho‐tyrosine‐containing peptides, and the full‐length phospho‐ERK protein using STEP mutants with different structural features. STEP was found to be a highly efficient ERK tyrosine phosphatase that required both its N‐terminal regulatory region and key residues in its active site. Specifically, both kinase interaction motif (KIM) and kinase‐specific sequence of STEP were required for ERK interaction. In addition to the N‐terminal kinase‐specific sequence region, S245, hydrophobic residues L249/L251, and basic residues R242/R243 located in the KIM region were important in controlling STEP activity toward phospho‐ERK. Further kinetic experiments revealed subtle structural differences between STEP and HePTP that affected the interactions of their KIMs with ERK. Moreover, STEP recognised specific positions of a phospho‐ERK peptide sequence through its active site, and the contact of STEP F311 with phospho‐ERK V205 and T207 were crucial interactions. Taken together, our results not only provide the information for interactions between ERK and STEP, but will also help in the development of specific strategies to target STEP‐ERK recognition, which could serve as a potential therapy for neurological disorders.

Human isolated gingival fibromatosis is an oral disorder characterized by a slowly progressive benign enlargement of gingival
tissues. The most common genetic form, hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF), is usually transmitted as an autosomal dominant
trait. We report here for the first time a newly identified maternally inherited gingival fibromatosis in two unrelated Chinese
families and mapped this disease locus to human chromosome 11p15 with a maximum two point LOD score of 8.70 at D11S4046 (θ = 0) for family 1 and of 6.02 at D11S1318 for family 2. Haplotype analysis placed the critical region in the interval defined by D11S1984 and D11S1338. A cluster of maternally expressed genes is within this critical region. We screened individuals in these two families for
mutations for all known maternally expressed genes within this region. None was found either within the coding sequence or
at the intron–exon boundary of these genes. Neither did we detect any loss of imprinting in three informative imprinted genes
including H19, KCNQ1 downstream neighbor (KCNQ1DN) and cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 1C (CDKN1C). However, gene expression profile analysis revealed reduced expression of hemoglobin beta (HBB), hemoglobin delta (HBD), hemoglobin gamma A (HBG1) and hemoglobin gamma G (HBG2) genes at disease locus in HGF patients. This study suggests that genome imprinting might affect the development of HGF.
