Two high affinity estrogen binding proteins of different specificity in the immature rat uterus cytosol

The presence of two high affinity estrogen binding proteins in the uterine cytosol of the immature rat has been observed.Besides the 8 S cytosol estrogen $\text{receptor}$, there is a 4–5 S fraction binding estradiol and estrone with a large capacity. In fact, the two binding systems have a different affinity for estradiol and estrone, the receptor binding more the former and the 4–5 S fraction more the latter. Exposure of the cytosol to specific anti-α₁-Fetoprotein antibodies suppresses a large part of the 4–5 S binder, if not the totality. Moreover the estrogen binding 4–5 S fraction decreases with increasing age until puberty, while the $\text{receptor}$ increases. These results suggest therefore that the estradiol-estrone binding 4–5 S peak of the uterine cytosol is mainly made up of Estradiol Binding Plasma Protein-α₁-Fetoprotein (EBP-AFP). Also they confirm that “cytosol” should be taken as an operational fraction which may include extracellular components.During the course of these experiments, it has been observed that the increase of the estradiol $\text{receptor}$ is more rapid than the other uterine cytosol proteins until the 8th day, and that there is a second period of growth when it follows the development of the uterus and of the animal, as if it had reached a constant number of binding sites per cell.     

In vitro incorporation of 2′-deoxyadenosine and 3′-deoxyadenosine into yeast tRNAPhe using tRNA nucleotidyl transferase,and properties of tRNAPhe-C-C-2′dA and tRNAPhe-C-C-3′dA

2′-Deoxyadenosine and 3′-deoxyadenosine (cordycepin) can be incorporated into the 3′-terminal position of tRNA^Phe by tRNA nucleotidyl transferase. tRNA^Phe-C-C-2′dA and tRNA^Phe-C-C-3′dA, missing the cis-diol group at the 3′-terminal end are resistant to periodate oxidation and are not able to form borate complexes. In aminoacylation experiments only the tRNA^Phe-C-C-3′dA proved to be chargeable.     

Esterase-2 in Ephestia kühniella. II. Tissue-specific patterns

Esterase-2 polymorphism has been investigated quantitatively. Staining intensities of the homodimer bands mm, ff, and ss are not equally expressed but found in relative activities of 1:0.5:0.7 in fat bodies and 1:1:3 in testes and gut walls. Relative intensities of the parental bands are binomially distributed in the three-banded patterns of heterozygotes in an exactly tissue-specific manner. Organ-specific proportions of relative activity remain constant throughout postembryonic development. Among reasons which may influence genesis of allele- and organ-specific activities of homodimer bands in homozygotes and may lead to asymmetrical distribution of intensities in the patterns of heterozygotes, a hypothesis of differential allelic activity is discussed, according to which the structural alleles 2 ^m , 2 ^f , and 2 ^s are closely linked to the alleles RG ^a , RG ^b , and RG ^c of a controlling gene.This work was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and submitted with Part I in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Dr.-habil. at the University of Tübingen.

Chromosome Abnormalities in Patients Treated with Chlorpromazine,Perphenazine, and Lysergide

In a chromosome study on leucocyte cultures made in 13 patients treated with chlorpromazine, 15 treated with perphenazine, and nine treated with lysergide, a significantly higher frequency of gaps, breaks, and hypodiploid cells in the patients treated with perphenazine and lysergide occurred compared with the 41 controls studied. It is concluded that if some drugs can induce major chromosome abnormalities, and less toxic alternatives are available, the latter should be used in preference.     

Chromosomenabnormitäten und Behandlung mit Imuran® (Azathioprin) nach Nierentransplantationen

Zusammenfassung 19 Patienten, die nach einer Nierentransplantation mit Imuran behandelt wurden, wiesen eine erhöhte Anzahl Chromosomenabnormitäten im Vergleich zu 30 gesunden Kontrollpersonen der gleichen Altersklasse auf. Keine signifikant erhöhte Anzahl an Chromosomenabnormitäten fand sich jedoch bei 7 Patienten, die vor und unter der Imuran-behandlung untersucht wurden. Es wird vermutet, daß die Chromosomenabnormitäten bei den 19 mit Imuran behandelten Patienten wahrscheinlich nicht durch Imuran, sondern durch die Urämie entstanden sind.

Summary 19 patients treated with Imuran after a renal transplantation showed a high frequency of chromosome abnormalities, compared with 30 healthy control persons in the same age range. No significantly higher frequency of chromosome abnormalities was, however, found in 7 patients examined before and during treatment with Imuran. It is suggested that the chromosome abnormalities found in the 19 patients treated with Imuran were probably not due to Imuran but to Uremia.

To facilitate further physiological investigation, a survey was undertaken of all the slit sense organs to be found on the body of the spider Cupiennius salei. We counted and mapped more than 3 000 sensory slits in the cuticle about half of which are combined to small groups of up to 29 slits forming compound or lyriform organs.     

The Avena geo-curvature test

Summary The Avena geo-curvature test is a bioassay for auxin-type growth regulators. Etiolated oat coleoptiles are used and the test is conducted in special perspex trays under diffuse daylight. The coleoptiles, with the primary leaves intact, are arranged in grooves on the trays in 4 series of 6 coleoptiles each, and cut to a size of 10 mm. The test substance is applied on an agar strip covering only the lower halves of the apical cut surfaces of each series. After a 4-hour stay in the dark in moist Petri dishes the coleoptile cylinders are shadowgraphed on a 35-mm photographic film. The curvatures are measured from an enlarged projection (10 times natural size) of the shadowgraphs.The lowest IAA concentration which can be determined is around 30 to 60 g/l, i.e. about 1 to 2 ng IAA. The concentration response curves follow a logarithmic course up to 1,000 g/l. The standard error of the mean in a test series comprising 6 coleoptiles is on an average ± 7%. The simple and quick procedures make it possible for a worker to test 60 to 80 fractions a day.Dedicated to Professor Hans Söding on the occasion of his seventieth birthday.
