Neurotransmitters are the compounds which allow the transmission of signals from one neuron to the next across synapses. They are the brain chemicals that communicate information throughout brain and body. Fullerenes are a family of carbonallotropes, molecules composed entirely of carbon, that take the forms of spheres, ellipsoids, and cylinders. Various empty carbon fullerenes (Cn) with different carbon atoms have been obtained and investigated. Topological indices have been successfully used to construct effective and useful mathematical methods to establish clear relationships between structural data and the physical properties of these materials. In this study, the number of carbon atoms in the fullerenes was used as an index to establish a relationship between the structures of neurotransmitters (NTs) acetylcholine (AC) 1, dopamine (DP) 2, serotonin (SE) 3, and epinephrine (EP) 4 as the well-known redox systems and fullerenes Cn (n = 60, 70, 76, 82, and 86) which create [NT].Cn; A-1 to A-5 up to D-1 to D-5. The relationship between the number of carbon atoms and the free energy of electron transfer (ΔGet(n); n = 1–4) is assessed using the Rehm-Weller equation for A-1 to A-5 up to D-1 to D-5 supramolecular [NT].Cn complexes. The calculations are presented for the four reduction potentials (Red.E1 to Red.E4) of fullerenes Cn. The results were used to calculate the four free energy values of electron transfer (ΔGet(1) to ΔGet(4)) of the supramolecular complexes A-1 to A-8 up to D-1 to D-8 for fullerenes C60 to C120. The first to fourth free activation energy values of electron transfer and the maximum wavelength of the electron transfers, ΔG#et(n) and λet (n = 1–4), respectively, were also calculated in this study for A-1 to A-8 up to D-1 to D-8 in accordance with the Marcus theory.  相似文献

Habitat fragmentation reduces the available habitat area and increases both the distance between fragments and the amount of fragment edges. Therefore, there are more probabilities of plant population size reduction and species extinction. In the same way, biotic and abiotic changes associated with forest fragmentation can dramatically alter plant growth and phenological patterns. We conducted a 3-year study to analyze effects of habitat fragmentation and seasonal variation on host plant quality (quantity of leaves, diameter at breast height, tree height), gall abundance and species richness in a temperate oak forest. Our results show that host plant quality was significantly higher in isolated oaks and small fragments, increasing the abundance and species richness of oak gall wasp species in most fragmented habitats. Oak canopy cover is altered by forest fragmentation, there being higher production of leaves on trees that are more exposed to fragmentation, and can provide important resources for maintaining gall wasp species diversity in a fragmented landscape. We found higher gall wasp richness and abundance in autumn than in the spring, which matches with the higher quantity of leaves in this season.  相似文献

The year 2016 will see significant improvements for the Journal of Cell Communication and Signaling with the earning of an official Impact Factor and the merger of Springer Science + Business Media and part of Macmillan Sciences and Education. It will also be an important year for the International CCN Society (ICCNS) with the nomination of a new Scientific Board and reinforcement of interactions with other major scientific societies interested in various aspects of Cell Signaling. Starting this year the ICCNS will become an official provider of CCN3 knock out mice to ICCNS members. This first step in opening up access to certified reagents as a service for our CCN scientific community is part of our intention and efforts to attain the highest degree of assistance and enabler of scientific cooperation and communication in Science Communication.  相似文献

Many empirical food webs contain multiple resources, which can lead to the emergence of sub-communities—partitions—in a food web that are weakly connected with each other. These partitions interact and affect the complete food web. However, the fact that food webs can contain multiple resources is often neglected when describing food web assembly theoretically, by considering only a single resource. We present an allometric, evolutionary food web model and include two resources of different sizes. Simulations show that an additional resource can lead to the emergence of partitions, i.e. groups of species that specialise on different resources. For certain arrangements of these partitions, the interactions between them alter the food web properties. First, these interactions increase the variety of emerging network structures, since hierarchical bodysize relationships are weakened. Therefore, they could play an important role in explaining the variety of food web structures that is observed in empirical data. Second, interacting partitions can destabilise the population dynamics by introducing indirect interactions with a certain strength between predator and prey species, leading to biomass oscillations and evolutionary intermittence.  相似文献

Interspecific interactions may occur for just a brief period each year before the populations involved become spatially separated. For instance, the range of a migrating population may overlap with that of a population of predators for a single season. In this work, we outline a framework for examining how this kind of ‘transient’ predation influences the dynamics of the prey population. A time-dependent switching system is used to partition the annual cycle into distinct segments. We then consider the effect of a single predatory interaction during a particular season, with the associated predators characterised as either generalists or specialists. We show that generalist predation potentially can allow multiple stable limit cycles to exist. Predation by specialists may cause prey abundance to oscillate over long time periods. This is shown to be a consequence of over-exploitation of newborn prey individuals. The habitat-based formulation extends naturally to the study of interannual variation in environmental conditions. We illustrate how such changes may cause migrant populations to undergo sudden changes in numbers that are not readily reversible.  相似文献

The hooded pitcher plant, Sarracenia minor, is a carnivorous facultative wetland species native to the southeastern USA and is listed as threatened by the state of Florida. Pitchers of S. minor possess white, semitranslucent spots (areoles), which have been hypothesized to aid in the capture of prey (= visual lures) by increasing the amount of light entering the back of the hood, which persuades insects to enter and fall into the base of the pitcher. In this study, the role of the areoles in prey capture abundance and diversity were experimentally investigated under variable lighting conditions in situ. Plants in two populations experiencing different light intensities, which varied in the amount of canopy cover and incident light reaching the plants, were experimentally manipulated by coloring varying percentages of areoles, ranging from 0 to 100 % (in increments of 25 %), with indelible ink. After 2 months, pitchers were collected and dissected to determine the number and identity of prey captured (approximately 18,000 prey were sampled). Although total prey abundance was approximately five times higher at McGirt’s Creek (sunny site) compared to UNF (shaded site), the effect of areoles on prey capture rates and biodiversity was site dependent. Reducing the number of visual lures of plants at the sunny site produced a significant decrease in the number of prey captured, but prey biodiversity (community composition) was unaffected. However, total prey capture was unaffected at the shaded site, while prey biodiversity was negatively correlated with the percent of areoles colored. Results from the current study suggest that areoles conditionally act as visual lures, but their overall importance is dependent on local environmental variables—especially canopy cover and the amount of incident sunlight reaching the plants.  相似文献

The coffee berry borer (CBB), Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari), is the most important insect pest of coffee worldwide. In this study, we used headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry to sample and identify volatile compounds from Robusta coffee berries, Coffea canephora Pierre ex Froehner, infested with CBB and with mechanical damage. Furthermore, we evaluated the behavioral responses of the CBB and two of its parasitoids, Prorops nasuta Waterstone and Phymastichus coffea LaSalle, to three selected coffee volatile compounds in a Y-tube olfactometer. We found in the effluvia of red coffee berry compounds not previously reported for this coffee species. Our results show that Robusta coffee berries release induced volatiles either by insect herbivory or by mechanical damage. Small amount of butyl acetate, unknown compound 2, α-longipinene, longiborneol and longiborneol acetate are produced only in infested coffee berries fruits. Quantitatively, nine compounds account for the difference between healthy berries, infested, or mechanically damaged berries. Trans-ocimene, 4,8-dimethyl-3,7-nonadien-2-ol, α-copaene and kaurene increased amount levels in infested berries, while amount of methyl salicylate and linalool increased in mechanically damaged coffee berries. The olfactometric bioassays showed that CBB females and its two parasitoids were attracted to methyl salicylate. In addition, H. hampei and P. nasuta were attracted to linalool, and P. nasuta and P. coffea were attracted to trans-ocimene.  相似文献
