Antibiotic resistance plasmids from staphylococci and soil bacilli have been isolated and compared. A tetracycline resistance (Tcr) plasmid, indistinguishable from pT181, which is typical of Tcr plasmids that are widely dispersed among human clinical isolates of S. aureus, has been found also in bovine mastitis isolates. This plasmid, however, shows no detectable homology to a family of related Tcr plasmids, typified by pBC16, that is widely dispersed among aerobic spore-forming bacilli. However, and rather unexpectedly, pBC16 is highly homologous to and incompatible with pUB110, an S. aureus plasmid specifying kanamycin resistance. The two plasmids are homologous except for the region occupied by their resistance determinants, which has the appearance of a heterologous substitution. These results suggest the occurrence of natural plasmid transfer between staphylococci and soil bacilli. 相似文献

Visible light of moderate intensity inhibits growth, respiration, protein synthesis, and membrane transport in bakers' yeast and has a deleterious effect on membrane integrity. The results of this study indicate that these effects require the presence of cytochromes b and a/a(3). The light sensitivities of growth rate and [(14)C]histidine uptake in wild-type rho(+) Y185 and D225-5A strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were compared with those in a variety of mutants lacking cytochrome b or a/a(3) or both; a close correlation was found between the presence of these respiratory pigments and photosensitivity. Thus, strain TL5-3C, a nuclear petite lacking cytochromes b, a, and a(3), was resistant to light; strain GL5-6A, another nuclear petite having reduced amounts of cytochromes a and a(3), was partially resistant; strains MB127-20C and MB1-6C, nuclear petites lacking only cytochrome b, were also only partially resistant to light; whereas mutants containing all three cytochromes but having their respiratory chain either nonfunctional (strain ZK3-6B) or uncoupled (strain 18-27/t12) were fully sensitive to light. Finally, an equal-energy, broad-band action spectrum for the light inhibition of growth and transport indicated that blue light (408 nm) was most effective; these wavelengths correspond to the Soret region of the cytochrome absorption spectrum. The results suggest, therefore, that the yeast cytochromes b, a, and a(3) are the primary photoreceptors for the inhibitory effects of light and, perhaps, for other processes, such as the entrainment of biological rhythms in this species. 相似文献

Frog skin has been used as a model epithelial sodium-transporting system to study the effect of ethanol on ion transport. Treatment of the outside of frog skin with ethanol decreased the net sodium transport due to inhibition of 22Na+ influx. Ethanol did not alter sodium outflux when bathing the outside of the skin. The inhibition was in proportion to the concentration of ethanol, 0.25 M resulting in 50% inhibition. The chloride permeability of the skin was increased several-fold when the skin was exposed to ethanol in either bathing solution. With 0.4 M ethanol in the inner bathing solution, all the unidirectional fluxes of Na+ and Cl? were increased. The movement of Cl? was evaluated by comparison of Cl? flux with urea flux, since urea is thought to move passively across frog skin via an extracellular (shunt) pathway. Chloride flux was increased to a greater extent than urea flux. These experiments indicate that ethanol affects chloride permeability beyond an increase in extracellular ion flow and independent of its effect on Na+ transport. 相似文献

Despite their high theoretical energy density and low cost, lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) suffer from poor cycle life and low energy efficiency owing to the polysulfides shuttle and the electronic insulating nature of sulfur. Conductivity and polarity are two critical parameters for the search of optimal sulfur host materials. However, their role in immobilizing polysulfides and enhancing redox kinetics for long‐life LSBs are not fully understood. This work has conducted an evaluation on the role of polarity over conductivity by using a polar but nonconductive platelet ordered mesoporous silica (pOMS) and its replica platelet ordered mesoporous carbon (pOMC), which is conductive but nonpolar. It is found that the polar pOMS/S cathode with a sulfur mass fraction of 80 wt% demonstrates outstanding long‐term cycle stability for 2000 cycles even at a high current density of 2C. Furthermore, the pOMS/S cathode with a high sulfur loading of 6.5 mg cm?2 illustrates high areal and volumetric capacities with high capacity retention. Complementary physical and electrochemical probes clearly show that surface polarity and structure are more dominant factors for sulfur utilization efficiency and long‐life, while the conductivity can be compensated by the conductive agent involved as a required electrode material during electrode preparation. The present findings shed new light on the design principles of sulfur hosts towards long‐life and highly efficient LSBs. 相似文献

There is evidence that copepods undertake vertical migrations in shallow waters off the north coast of Java. They aggregate at the surface of the sea at dawn and dusk but sink to deeper levels in the middle of the day. Chaetognaths feed on copepods and tend to occur in areas which are rich in their prey.
