Some lacewings occur in winter as larvae and may be efficient predators, either under Mediterranean and mild temperate climates, or in cold greenhouses. They can be used to help controlling aphids in winter. Among chrysopids,Dichochrysa spp. overwinter as second and/or third instars; they show a low preying rate, both a moderate cold hardiness and a minimal activity threshold.Nineta pallida overwinters as first instars which have a very low activity threshold and a high cold hardiness. In hemerobiids — namely various spp. ofHemerobius, Wesmaelius, Micromus — hibernating larvae manifest prey searching and feeding activity at low temperatures. Minimal thermal thresholds may be very low in embryos and in larvae. Adults often are insensitive to photoperiod and so do not exhibit any diapause under short daylength conditions; they have a low minimal activity threshold for preying and reproducing.  相似文献

Background

The durability of Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs) in field conditions is of great importance for malaria prevention and control efforts; however, the physical integrity of the net fabric is not well understood making it challenging to determine overall effectiveness of nets as they age. The 2011 World Health Organization Pesticide Evaluation Scheme (WHOPES) guidelines provide a simple, standardized method using a proportional hole index (PHI) for assessing net damage with the intent to provide national malaria control programs with guidelines to assess the useful life of LLINS and estimate the rate of replacement.

Methods

We evaluated the utility of the PHI measure using 409 LLINs collected over three years in Nampula Province, Mozambique following a mass distribution campaign in 2008. For each LLIN the diameter and distance from the bottom of the net were recorded for every hole. Holes were classified into four size categories and a PHI was calculated following WHOPES guidelines. We investigate how the size, shape, and location of holes influence the PHI. The areas of the WHOPES defined categories were compared to circular and elliptical areas based on approximate shape and actual measured axes of each hole and the PHI was compared to cumulative damaged surface area of the LLIN.

Results

The damaged area of small, medium, large, and extra-large holes was overestimated using the WHOPES categories compared to elliptical areas using the actual measured axes. Similar results were found when comparing to circular areas except for extra-large holes which were underestimated. (Wilcoxon signed rank test of differences p< 0.0001 for all sizes). Approximating holes as circular overestimated hole surface area by 1.5 to 2 times or more. There was a significant difference in the mean number of holes < 0.5 cm by brand and there were more holes of all sizes on the bottom of nets than the top. For a range of hypothetical PHI thresholds used to designate a “failed LLIN”, roughly 75 to 80% of failed LLINs were detected by considering large and extra-large holes alone, but sensitivity varied by brand.

Conclusions

Future studies may refine the PHI to better approximate overall damaged surface area. Furthermore, research is needed to identify whether or not appropriate PHI thresholds can be used to deem a net no longer protective. Once a cutoff is selected, simpler methods of determining the effective lifespan of LLINs can help guide replacement strategies for malaria control programs.  相似文献

Solar lentigines and ephelides are different types of pigmented skin lesions predominantly present on sun-exposed skin. Both lesions are risk indicators for melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. Solar lentigines are considered as a sign of photodamage although well-conducted epidemiological studies are lacking on this subject. Ephelides are associated with fair skin type and red hair. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relation of sun-exposure estimates with solar lentigines and ephelides. In the Leiden Skin cancer Study 577 patients with malignant melanoma and/or non-melanoma skin cancer and 385 individuals without a history of skin cancer were studied. The presence of solar lentigines and ephelides in the face and on the back was assessed. Data on skin type, hair color, sun-exposure variables and cutaneous signs of photodamage were collected, by questionnaire and physical examination. Data were analyzed by chi-square or Student t-tests and with multivariable regression. Exposure odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated to estimate the relative risk for the presence of solar lentigines and ephelides dependent on signs of photodamage. The association with age was strongly positive for solar lentigines whereas it was strongly negative for ephelides (P-values for trend <0.0001). After adjustment for age, sex and skin type, solar lentigines on the back were positively associated with cumulative (P = 0.01) and intermittent (P = 0.0002) sun exposure. After adjustment, solar lentigines on the back were also associated with a history of sunburns before the age of 20 yr (P = 0.0003) and the number of sunburns in childhood (P = 0.002). Solar lentigines in the face were significantly associated with cutaneous signs of photodamage, i.e. elastosis (odds ratio 2.4, 95% CI 1.7-3.3) and actinic keratosis (odds ratio 1.8, 95% CI 1.3-2.4) whereas ephelides were not. Ephelides in the face and on the back showed an inverse association with chronic sun exposure but after adjustment theses associations disappeared. Sunburns before the age of 20 appeared to be positively associated with ephelides on the back (P = 0.04). In contrast to lentigines, ephelides were much more associated with constitutional host factors such as fair skin and/or red hair (both P < 0.0001). This study indicates that both chronic and acute sun exposure are important in the pathogenesis of solar lentigines.  相似文献

Here we study the evolution of nucleotide composition in third codon-positions of CO1 sequences of Chelicerata, using a phylogenetic framework, based on 180 taxa and three markers (CO1, 18S, and 28S rRNA; 5,218?nt). The analyses of nucleotide composition were also extended to all CO1 sequences of Chelicerata found in GenBank (1,701 taxa). The results show that most species of Chelicerata have a positive strand bias in CO1, i.e., in favor of C nucleotides, including all Amblypygi, Palpigradi, Ricinulei, Solifugae, Uropygi, and Xiphosura. However, several taxa show a negative strand bias, i.e., in favor of G nucleotides: all Scorpiones, Opisthothelae spiders and several taxa within Acari, Opiliones, Pseudoscorpiones, and Pycnogonida. Several reversals of strand-specific bias can be attributed to either a rearrangement of the control region or an inversion of a fragment containing the CO1 gene. Key taxa for which sequencing of complete mitochondrial genomes will be necessary to determine the origin and nature of mtDNA rearrangements involved in the reversals are identified. Acari, Opiliones, Pseudoscorpiones, and Pycnogonida were found to show a strong variability in nucleotide composition. In addition, both mitochondrial and nuclear genomes have been affected by higher substitution rates in Acari and Pseudoscorpiones. The results therefore indicate that these two orders are more liable to fix mutations of all types, including base substitutions, indels, and genomic rearrangements.  相似文献

The European Union (EU)’s Water Framework Directive (WFD) requires that all Member States participate in intercalibration exercises in order to ensure that ecological status concepts and assessment levels are consistent across the EU. This paper describes one such exercise, performed by the countries in the Central/Baltic Geographical Intercalibration Group stretching from Ireland in the west to Estonia in the east and from the southern parts of Scandinavia to the northern regions of Spain and Italy (but excluding alpine regions, which were intercalibrated separately). In this exercise, methods used to measure ecological status of rivers using benthic diatoms were compared. Ecological status is estimated as the ratio between the observed value of a biological element and the value expected in the absence of significant human impact. Approaches to defining the ‘reference sites’, from which these ‘expected’ values were derived, varied from country to country. Minimum criteria were established as part of the exercise but there was still considerable variation between national reference values, reflecting typological differences that could not be resolved during the exercise. A simple multimetric index was developed to compare boundary values using two widely used diatom metrics. Boundary values for high/good status and good/moderate status set by each participant were converted to their equivalent values of this intercalibration metric using linear regression. Variation of ±0.05 EQR units around the median value was considered to be acceptable and the exercise provided a means for those Member States who fell significantly above or below this line to review their approaches and, if necessary, adjust their boundaries. A new comparative study of the two crania, LGPUT RZO-03 and LGPUT RZO-68 attributed to Palaeoreas zouavei Bouvrain, 1980 from the Late Miocene of Axios Valley, Greece reveals great morphological and metric differences between them, which require the exclusion of LGPUT RZO-68 from this species and even from Palaeoreas Gaudry, 1861. This decision leaves unsupported many diagnostic features of P. zouavei applied by previous authors and along with recent data from Bulgaria put in doubt the validity of P. zouavei as a whole. As a result, the genus Palaeoreas is re-defined as monotypic and the cranial morphometric changes of P. lindermayeri (Wagner, 1848) are discussed on a temporal basis. An updated taxonomic analysis confirms the presence of P. lindermayeri in the Late Turolian mammal assemblage of Dytiko-1 (Axios Valley, Greece) but rejects its occurrence at Dytiko-2. Instead, a re-examination of old cranial specimens and a study of new ones suggest the presence in both sites of Majoreas Kostopoulos, 2004 a Late Miocene taxon previously mostly known from the eastern banks of the Aegean Sea. A reassessment of the LGPUT RZO-68 cranium, and its comparison with Palaeoreas and Criotherium Forsyth-Major, 1891, suggests that it deserves taxonomic distinction at genus and species levels: Stryfnotherium exophthalmon.  相似文献

The oxidative interaction of cytochrome c (Cyt c) with liposomes of Palmitoyl Linoleyl Phosphatidyl Choline (PLPC) initiated by radio-induced free radicals was investigated. Results showed that the peroxidation of PLPC is decreased in the presence of Cyt c, meaning that this latter is the preferential target of hydroxyl radicals. In addition, when Cyt c was incubated with peroxidized PLPC, it was found to be able to decompose hydroperoxides of PLPC into hydroxides. The peroxidase activity of Cyt c proceeded via the opening of the tertiary structure of Cyt c, as suggested by the loss of the sixth coordination bond of the heme-iron. Even if it is known to preferentially interact with cardiolipin, this work shows that Cyt c is also able to interact with hydroperoxide species of non-anionic phospholipids.  相似文献

Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are rare quiescent cells that continuously replenish the cellular components of the peripheral blood. Observing that the ataxia-associated gene Ataxin-1-like (Atxn1L) was highly expressed in HSCs, we examined its role in HSC function through in vitro and in vivo assays. Mice lacking Atxn1L had greater numbers of HSCs that regenerated the blood more quickly than their wild-type counterparts. Molecular analyses indicated Atxn1L null HSCs had gene expression changes that regulate a program consistent with their higher level of proliferation, suggesting that Atxn1L is a novel regulator of HSC quiescence. To determine if additional brain-associated genes were candidates for hematologic regulation, we examined genes encoding proteins from autism- and ataxia-associated protein–protein interaction networks for their representation in hematopoietic cell populations. The interactomes were found to be highly enriched for proteins encoded by genes specifically expressed in HSCs relative to their differentiated progeny. Our data suggest a heretofore unappreciated similarity between regulatory modules in the brain and HSCs, offering a new strategy for novel gene discovery in both systems.  相似文献
