We consider the problem of testing whether an identified treatment is better than each of K treatments. Suppose there are univariate test statistics Si that contrast the identified treatment with treatment i for i = 1, 2,...., K. The min test is defined to be the alpha-level procedure that rejects the null hypothesis that the identified treatment is not best when, for all i, Si rejects the one-sided hypothesis, at the alpha-level, that the identified treatment is not better than the ith treatment. In the normal case where Si are t statistics the min test is the likelihood ratio test. For distributions satisfying mild regularity conditions, if attention is restricted to test statistics that are monotone nondecreasing functions of Si, then regardless of their covariance structure the min test is an optimal alpha-level test. Tables of the sample size needed to achieve power .5, .8, .90, and .95 are given for the min test when the Si are Student's t and Wilcoxon. 相似文献

Serial measurements of estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P) were used to describe the ovarian cycle of the Bolivian squirrel monkey. Group-caged, sexually mature female squirrel monkeys, housed with males, were sampled daily between 0900 and 1100 hr. Sampling was carried out during the breeding and nonbreeding seasons, for periods of 19–20 days from September 1981 to May 1982. Seasonal differences in serum concentrations of E2 and P were found with low levels of E2 and P and an absence of preovulatory surges of E2 during the nonbreeding season. This pattern was also observed in some animals during the breeding season. An abrupt increase in serum P concentrations in December appeared to signal the onset of cycling. Cycling animals had well-defined peaks of E2 (450–9,500 pg/ml) followed by increasing levels of P, which were >200 ng/ml in some animals. After the breeding season, E2 and P levels returned to their initially low levels. Levels of both steroids in cycling animals were higher than those reported for other primates and for previous measurements made in squirrel monkeys. In order to study the possible mutagenic properties of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), human lymphocyte cultures were examined for chromosome breakage, rearrangements, sister-chromatid exchange, and mitotic delay. The present study, which used cyclophosphamide as a positive control, shows that one planar PCB congener, 3,4,3',4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl, caused dose-related chromosome breakage in human lymphocytes exposed in vitro to 0.1-10(-4) micrograms/ml. In contrast, the non-planar PCB, 2,5,2',5', did not cause chromosome damage in comparable tests even at concentrations as high as 1 microgram/ml. However, when 3,4,3',4' at a concentration lower than that which causes chromosome breakage (10(-5) micrograms/ml) was combined with a non-clastogenic concentration of 2,5,2',5', the chromosomal damage observed was far in excess of what one would expect from higher doses of 3,4,3',4' alone. Prolonged fetal tracheal occlusion (TO) accelerates lung growth but leads to loss of alveolar epithelial type II (AE2) cells. In contrast, temporary TO leads to recovery of AE2 cells and their ability to produce surfactant. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of temporary TO in fetal sheep with lung hypoplasia on postnatal lung function, structure, and surfactant protein mRNA expression. Diaphragmatic hernia (DH) was created in 22 fetal sheep at 65 days of gestation. TO was performed between 110 days of gestation and full term (DH/TO, n = 7) and between 110 and 130 days of gestation (DH/TO+R, n = 6). Sham-operated fetuses (n = 11) served as controls. Lambs were delivered at approximately 139 days of gestation, and blood gas tensions were monitored over a 2-h resuscitation period. Temporary TO increased growth of the hypoplastic lung and restored surfactant protein mRNA expression and AE2 cell density but did not improve respiratory function above that of animals that underwent prolonged TO; DH/TO and DH/TO+R lambs were hypoxic and hypercapnic compared with Sham animals. Lung compliance remained low in DH/TO+R lambs, most likely as a consequence of the persistent increase in alveolar wall thickness in these animals. 相似文献
