The influence of age, gender and sexual activity on both hepatic levels of some trace elements (Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Se) and the
activities of glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) was investigated in Wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus) and Algerian mice (Mus spretus). Animals were taken from a riverside community of an unpolluted area of central Portugal. Adult A. sylvaticus presented the highest hepatic mean concentrations of Cu and Mn, whereas adult M. spretus had the highest Fe concentration in the liver. Moreover, an influence of age on the contents of Fe, Zn, and Mn has been observed
in A. sylvaticus, whereas in M. spretus an influence of gender and sexual activity was only detected on Zn levels. In contrast, enzyme activities were not influenced
by the studied variables, despite a tendency for an increase in SOD activity in sexually active M. spretus. GST activity was species dependent, whereas SOD activity was similar between species. These findings were analyzed regarding
the relationship of both essential trace elements and the two antioxidant enzymes with physiological and metabolic pathways
related to life cycles in the two species of mice. Results enhanced the understanding of A. sylvaticus and M. spretus as biological models, allowing their future use as bioindicators of environmental toxicity. 相似文献

To monitor the colonization of wheat roots by Azospirillum brasilense, we constructed several plasmids based on the pBBR1 replicon expressing the gfp and gusA genes constitutively. Both genes were placed under control of the gentamycin resistance gene promoter resulting in high levels of expression in Escherichia coli and A. brasilense. The constructed plasmids were stably maintained in A. brasilense strains even in the absence of selective pressure. The colonization of wheat plants grown under controlled conditions in sterilized vermiculite by A. brasilense strain FP2 (a Sp7-derivative) transconjugants containing these plasmids was monitored. Bacteria expressing GFP were easily observed in fresh plant material by fluorescence microscopy. Cell aggregates and single bacteria were visualized on the surfaces of young root zones, such as roots hairs and lateral roots. Large cellular clumps were observed at the points of lateral root emergence or at intercellular spaces of root epidermal cells 30 days after inoculation. Although we failed to detected bacteria in internal cortical and xylem tissues of wheat roots, the initial stage of endophytic colonization by A. brasilense may involve the sites detected in this work. 相似文献

We studied the influence of metabolites of -aminobutyric shunt of the tricarboxylic acid cycle on the activities of aconitate hydratase (EC.4.2.1.3) as well as NAD- and NADP-specific isocitrate dehydrogenases (EC.1.1.1.41 and EC.1.1.1.42, respectively) using purified enzyme preparations from pea leaves (Pisum sativum L.) and maize scutellum (Zea mays L.). -Aminobutyric acid and succinate proved to have no significant effect on these enzymes, while 0.1–0.2 mM glutamate markedly activated NADP isocitrate dehydrogenase from both sources, especially at unsaturating concentrations of the substrate. Succinic semialdehyde stimulated the activities of aconitate hydratase and NADP isocitrate dehydrogenase. The obtained data point to a similar pattern of the effect of intermediates of -aminobutyric shunt on the studied enzymatic activities for both photosynthetic tissues (pea leaves) and those with acidifying, transport, and digestive functions (maize scutellum). However, the absence of pronounced control effects of most metabolites on the studied enzymes allows us to assign them to a relatively inert pool of metabolites. 相似文献

Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is an organism that is frequently transmitted in hospitals and perinatal units. The MRSA is considered a public health problem in neonatology because of its strong potential for dissemination in the wards associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. In this study we describe the bacteriological, epidemiological and molecular characteristics of MRSA isolated from anterior nares and blood cultures of newborns hospitalized in a public maternity hospital in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The frequency of MRSA isolated from nasal swabs of newborns was 47.8% (43/90). The genetic analysis of MRSA strains from anterior nares, showed 8 different pulsed field gel electrophoresis patterns (PFGE). Upon analysis of PFGE patterns of the 12 MRSA strains isolated from blood cultures, 8 different patterns were observed, 9 (75%) strains were genetic related to nasal secretion isolates patterns. In conclusion, our data demonstrate the importance of screening of newborns for the presence of MRSA in Brazilian hospitals and the usefulness of genetic typing of these pathogen during epidemiologic studies. This should lead to a better knowledge on the significancy and spreading of MRSA in the hospitals. 相似文献

BackgroundThe aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of prophylactic corticosteroids to prevent pain flare (PF) in bone metastases treated with radiotherapy performing a meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials (RCT).Materials and methodsRCTs were identified on Medline, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and the proceedings of annual meetings through June 2020. We followed the PRISMA and MOOSE guidelines. A meta-analysis was performed to assess if corticosteroids reduce the PF, pain progression, and the mean of days with PF compared with the placebo. A p-value < 0.05 was considered significant.ResultsThree RCTs with a total of 713 patients treated were included. The corticosteroids reduced the occurrence of early PF 20.5% (51/248) versus 32% (80/250) placebo, OR = 0.55 (95% CI: 0.36–0.82, p = 0.002). The mean days of PF were reduced to 1.6 days (95% CI: 1.3–1.9, p = 0.0001). Prophylactic corticosteroids had more patients with no PF and no pain progression, OR = 1.63 (95% CI: 1.14–2.32, p = 0.007). No significant corticosteroids effect was observed for pain progression (p = ns) and late PF occurrence (p = ns).ConclusionProphylactic corticosteroids reduced the incidence of early PF, the days with PF, resulting in a superior rate of patients with no PF and no pain progression, but with no significant benefit for reducing pain progression or late PF occurrence. 相似文献

Trends in fish passage studies are increasingly moving towards a holistic approach in considering the movements of a wide range of fish species and other aquatic fauna. In this context, it is important to consider not only salmonids and other game species, but also coarse species such as cyprinids. Moreover, knowledge of their behaviour when confronted with fishways is limited, particularly their upstream movements with regard to different hydraulic configurations. To address this deficit, research was conducted in an indoor full-scale pool-type fishway to assess the cyprinid Iberian barbel Barbus bocagei (Steindachner, 1864) response to the simultaneous presence of submerged orifices and surface notches with adjustable dimensions in association with two different flow regimes over the notches, i.e. plunging and streaming. Overall, orifices (76%) were the clear choice to negotiate the fishway. When the flow was in the plunging mode, a significantly higher proportion of fish selected the orifices to move upstream, but the proportions were equal during the streaming mode. The time taken to enter the fishway differed significantly according to the chosen discharge device and was lower for submerged orifices (52 s to 35 min.). The present study identified key factors in Iberian barbel upstream movements, which provide direct applications to future fishway designs for this species. 相似文献

In a study of the causes of abortion and stillbirth in a Holstein-Friesian herd, the most probable cause detected was a lethal gene transmitted through the pedigree line. Findings of this nature have already been reported both in the United States and Canada for the same line.Replacing the sires with others solved the problem, thus demonstrating a genetic etiology for abortion and stillbirth in this lineage. The differences noted in the time of fetal mortality may indicate the action of more than one gene or variable expressivity of the mutant gene.The importance of the data is discussed in terms of the elimination of genetic factors that cause fetal mortality. 相似文献

The piprids (manakins) are small-bodied Neotropical birds characterized by sexual dimorphism of the plumage and elaborate courtship rituals. The phylogenetic relationships of some of piprid genera, in particular Pipra , are not well defined. Recently, Pipra was divided into three distinct groups, and the recognition of two new genera — Lepidothrix and Dixiphia — was suggested, based on the characteristic of the syringial morphology. In the present study, we analyse the phylogenetic relationships among these genera on the basis of data from the mitochondrial genes rRNA 16S and cytochrome b . Bayesian Inference (BI), Maximum Parsimony (MP) and Maximum Likelihood (ML) methods of analyses produced phylogenetic trees with very similar topologies with regard to the groupings formed by the species representing the three genera. These results indicate that the genera Pipra, Lepidothrix and Dixiphia do not constitute a single monophyletic clade, and support the current hypothesis of polyphyletism for the former representatives of the genus Pipra . However, the topologies presented do not coincide exactly with the phylogeny suggested by the morphological data with regard to the relationship between these three groups and the remaining piprid genera analysed here, emphasizing the need for further studies of this group of birds. The agreement between the molecular data presented here and the biogeographical information available for some of the species analysed appears to confirm the potential of using segments of the mitochondrial genome for the study of phylogeographical patterns in this group of organisms. 相似文献
