The sediments and various organisms in Lake Päijänne were examined for contaminants. The average mercury content of water plants was 9, of plankton 14, of sediment 114, of zoobenthic predators 83, of fish 332–1510 and of birds 240–13685 μg kg−1 (wet weight). The average PCB content of plants was 3, of plankton 21, of the zoobenthos 44, of fish 36-117 and of birds 219–13490 μg kg−1. The average ΔDDT content of plants was 0.5, of plankton 6, of the zoobenthos 14, of fish 7–42 and of birds 144-8262 μg kg−1. Regional differences in mercury content were most pronounced in sediment and fish. PCB concentration was highest near a town. ΔDDT was quite evenly distributed. Water plant species did not differ from each other, nor did the plankton fractions. The zoobenthic predators contained more chlorinated hydrocarbons than did the herbivores. There were clear differences between most species of fish and the chlorinated hydrocarbon content was highest in vendace. In adult birds levels of all residues were significantly higher than in juveniles. In most cases PCB content was positively correlated with ΔDDT and in birds PCB, ΔDDT and mercury levels were correlated. DDT residues occurred mostly as DDE, but in vendace the proportion of DDT was high. At most trophic levels, ΔDDT/PCB was 0.15-0.40 but in birds it reached 1–2. 相似文献
Variants of B 16-F 1 mouse melanoma cells selected for resistance to wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) toxicity were found to have undergone a stable surface change correlated both to lectin resistance and reduced metastasizing potential. The surface alteration, as indicated by the increased electrophoretic mobilities of several lactoperoxidase-iodinated cell surface proteins in SDS-PAGE, was restricted to polypeptides able to interact with WGA. The availability of lectin-resistant melanoma cell variants having altered metastasizing behavior provides a promising approach to studies of the role of specific cell surface components in the metastasizing process. 相似文献
The derivatives obtained by per-methylation of unsubstituted 2-amino-2-deoxy-hexitols and of these compounds monosubstituted at C-3. C-4, or C-6, and disubstituted at C-3 and C-6, have been analysed by g.l.c.-m.s. Each derivative can be identified on the basis of retention time and mass spectrum. In methylation analysis, methanolysis gave one derivative of each hexitol, whereas a mixture of products was formed when degradation was effected by acetolysis followed by hydrolysis. An application in the analysis of amino-sugar linkages in alkali-labile O-glycosylic oligosaccharides from rat-brain glycoproteins is described. 相似文献
The site of substitution of the peripheral branches on the core mannose-residues in the complex-type carbohydrate units of glycoproteins has been studied by Smith degradation. By using glycopeptides of known structure, it is shown that the site of attachment of the (1→4)-linked, third branch to the mannose core in tri- and tetra-antennary structures may be conveniently demonstrated by this technique. A critical factor was found to be the concentration of acid used for cleavage of the periodate-oxidized product. This finding could explain discrepancies concerning the previously published structures of fetuin glycopeptides. The technique was applied for study of the branching pattern in human transferrin, porcine thyroglobulin, and rat plasma and brain glycoproteins. The results support the concept that, in glycoproteins from most sources, the third (1→4)-linked branch is attached to the (1→3)-linked mannose residue of the core portion in the complex-type structures. An indication for a novel type of branching pattern in human transferrin was, however, also obtained. 相似文献
In a large majority of animal species, the only contribution of males to the next generation has been assumed to be their genes (sperm). However, along with sperm, seminal plasma contains a wide array of extracellular factors that have many important functions in reproduction. Yet, the potential intergenerational effects of these factors are virtually unknown. We investigated these effects in European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) by experimentally manipulating the presence and identity of seminal plasma and by fertilizing the eggs of multiple females with the manipulated and unmanipulated semen of several males in a full‐factorial breeding design. The presence of both own seminal plasma and foreign seminal plasma inhibited sperm motility, and the removal of own seminal plasma decreased embryo survival. Embryos hatched significantly earlier after both semen manipulations than in control fertilizations; foreign seminal plasma also increased offspring aerobic swimming performance. Given that our experimental design allowed us to control potentially confounding sperm‐mediated (sire) effects and maternal effects, our results indicate that seminal plasma may have direct intergenerational consequences for offspring phenotype and performance. This novel source of offspring phenotypic variance may provide new insights into the evolution of polyandry and mechanisms that maintain heritable variation in fitness and associated female mating preferences. 相似文献
Estimates of regional and global freshwater N2O emissions have remained inaccurate due to scarce data and complexity of the multiple processes driving N2O fluxes the focus predominantly being on summer time measurements from emission hot spots, agricultural streams. Here, we present four‐season data of N2O concentrations in the water columns of randomly selected boreal lakes covering a large variation in latitude, lake type, area, depth, water chemistry, and land use cover. Nitrate was the key driver for N2O dynamics, explaining as much as 78% of the variation of the seasonal mean N2O concentrations across all lakes. Nitrate concentrations varied among seasons being highest in winter and lowest in summer. Of the surface water samples, 71% were oversaturated with N2O relative to the atmosphere. Largest oversaturation was measured in winter and lowest in summer stressing the importance to include full year N2O measurements in annual emission estimates. Including winter data resulted in fourfold annual N2O emission estimates compared to summer only measurements. Nutrient‐rich calcareous and large humic lakes had the highest annual N2O emissions. Our emission estimates for Finnish and boreal lakes are 0.6 and 29 Gg N2O‐N/year, respectively. The global warming potential of N2O from lakes cannot be neglected in the boreal landscape, being 35% of that of diffusive CH4 emission in Finnish lakes. 相似文献
In 2016, an outbreak of anthrax killing thousands of reindeer and affecting dozens of humans occurred on the Yamal peninsula, Northwest Siberia, after 70 years of epidemiological situation without outbreaks. The trigger of the outbreak has been ascribed to the activation of spores due to permafrost thaw that was accelerated during the summer heat wave. The focus of our study is on the dynamics of local environmental factors in connection with the observed anthrax revival. We show that permafrost was thawing rapidly for already 6 years before the outbreak. During 2011–2016, relatively warm years were followed by cold years with a thick snow cover, preventing freezing of the soil. Furthermore, the spread of anthrax was likely intensified by an extremely dry summer of 2016. Concurrent with the long-term decreasing trend in the regional annual precipitation, the rainfall in July 2016 was less than 10% of its 30-year mean value. We conclude that epidemiological situation of anthrax in the previously contaminated Arctic regions requires monitoring of climatic factors such as warming and precipitation extremes.
To examine lipid peroxidation during radiotherapy (RT), exhaled pentane samples were collected from 11 lung cancer patients before RT and 30 and 120 min after the start of RT on days 1, 4 and 5 and at 30 and 40 Grays, if possible. Exhaled pentane samples were collected once from 30 healthy controls. Serum thiobarbituric-acid-reactive substances (TBARS) and conjugated dienes (CD) were obtained from patients on each exhaled air collection day. Lung cancer patients had higher exhaled pentane levels than controls (1.73 ng/L vs 0.83 ng/L, p=0.017). Exhaled pentane levels tended to decrease during the first RT day (p=0.075) and levels of CD decreased during the first week of RT (p=0.014). Higher pre-treatment pentane levels predicted better survival (p=0.003). Elevated exhaled pentane levels before RT may be due to the lipid peroxidation burden associated with cancer. The decrease of lipid peroxidation markers during RT may be attributable to enhanced antioxidant defense mechanisms. 相似文献
