The effect of whole-body cryotherapy (WBC) on rectal and skin temperatures was measured in healthy subjects before, during and after WBC exposure. WBC did not cause any significant change in rectal temperature. The lowest local skin temperatures were recorded in the forearm, 5.2 (2.8)°C, and in the calf, 5.3 (3.0)°C. WBC involves no risk for frostbites. After WBC, all skin temperatures recovered rapidly, indicating that the analgetic effects of WBC only occur during a limited period after the exposure.  相似文献

Osteopetrosis is a metabolic bone disease with increased skeletal density radiographically and increased risk of fracture. Experimental studies with rat osteopetrotic mutations have shown increased bone density and decreased bone strength. However, it is not known if this reduction in bone strength is only due to changes in structure and geometry or if the tissue properties of bone material itself are changed as well. We have evaluated bone tissue properties with nanoindentation in three osteopetrotic mutations in the rat (incisors-absent ia/ia, osteopetrosis op/op and toothless tl/tl) to test the hypothesis that reduced bone resorption in these mutations results in reduced tissue properties of bone material. No significant differences in elastic modulus or hardness were found between osteopetrotic mutants and their normal littermates (NLMs) in any of the three stocks. This indicates that the tissue properties of bone material are not changed significantly in osteopetrosis, even if the mechanical strength is decreased at the macroscopic level.  相似文献

Sympatric species are known to host the same parasites species. Nevertheless, surveys examining parasite assemblages in sympatric species are rare. To understand how parasite assemblages in sympatric host species differ in a given locality, we used a noninvasive identification method based on high-throughput sequencing. We collected fecal samples from sympatric species in Ranomafana National Park, Madagascar, from September to December in 2010, 2011, and 2012 and identified their parasites by metabarcoding, sequencing a region of the small ribosomal subunit (18S) gene. Our survey included 11 host species, including endemic primates, rodents, frogs, gastropods, and nonendemic rats and dogs. We collected 872 samples, of which 571 contained nematodes and 249 were successfully sequenced. We identified nine putative species of parasites, although their correspondence to actual parasite species is not clear as the resolution of the marker gene differs between nematode clades. For the host species that we successfully sampled with 10 or more positive occurrences of nematodes, i.e., mouse lemurs (Microcebus rufus), black rats (Rattus rattus), and frogs (Anura), the parasite assemblage compositions differed significantly among host species, sampling sites, and sampling years. Our metabarcoding method shows promise in interrogating parasite assemblages in sympatric host species and our results emphasize the importance of choosing marker regions for parasite identification accuracy.  相似文献

  • 1 The induced resistance of the subarctic mountain birch Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii is a well‐characterized phenomenon, whereas the induced responses of Betula nana L., one of the parental species of mountain birch, have not yet been characterized. Betula nana is more resistant to several classes of insectivorous herbivores than the mountain birch, although the mechanisms responsible for the better ability to resist herbivores are not known.
  • 2 The present study aimed to determine the metabolic changes that are induced by early season herbivory in B. nana leaves and to study the effects of rapidly induced resistance on the growth of Epirrita autumnata larvae.
  • 3 Defoliation of B. nana was accomplished by E. autumnata larvae and leaf samples for chemical analyses were collected when the defoliating larvae were at their third and fifth instar. At the same time, laboratory assays for the growth and consumption rates of E. autumnata larvae were conducted.
  • 4 The wounding of leaves by E. autumna larvae induced the production of ellagitannins (ETs) in B. nana. Intriguingly, the concentrations of protein‐bound amino acids were also induced by herbivory; however, an increase in proteins was not mirrored in the growth rate of larvae, which was less on the induced foliage. The decreased growth rate of larvae was apparently linked to the increased concentrations of oxidatively‐active ETs and the high concentration of ETs may explain the better resistance of this parental species compared with the hybrid mountain birch with its lower levels of ETs.

Sink conditions used in dissolution tests lead to rapid dissolution rates for nanosuspensions, causing difficulties in discriminating dissolution profiles between different formulations. Here, non-sink conditions were studied for the dissolution testing of poorly water-soluble drug nanosuspensions. A mathematical model for polydispersed particles was established to clarify dissolution mechanisms. The dissolution of nanosuspensions with either a monomodal or bimodal size distribution was simulated. In the experimental part, three different particle sizes of indomethacin nanosuspensions were prepared by the wet milling technique. The effects of the dissolution medium pH and agitation speed on dissolution rate were investigated. The dissolution profiles in sink and non-sink conditions were obtained by changing the ratio of sample amount to the saturation solubility. The results of the simulations and experiments indicated that when the sample amount was increased to the saturation solubility of drug, the slowest dissolution rate and the best discriminating dissolution profiles were obtained. Using sink conditions or too high amount of the sample will increase the dissolution rate and weaken the discrimination between dissolution profiles. Furthermore, the low solubility by choosing a proper pH of the dissolution medium was helpful in getting discriminating dissolution profiles, whereas the agitation speed appeared to have little influence on the dissolution profiles. This discriminatory method is simple to perform and can be potentially used in any nanoproduct development and quality control studies.  相似文献

The brain is a trait of central importance for organismal performance and fitness. To date, evolutionary studies of brain size variation have mainly utilized comparative methods applied at the level of species or higher taxa. However, these studies suffer from the difficulty of separating causality from correlation. In the other extreme, studies of brain plasticity have focused mainly on within‐population patterns. Between these extremes lie interpopulational studies, focusing on brain size variation among populations of the same species that occupy different habitats or selective regimes. These studies form a rapidly growing field of investigations which can help us to understand brain evolution by providing a test bed for ideas born out of interspecific studies, as well as aid in uncovering the relative importance of genetic and environmental factors shaping variation in brain size and architecture. Aside from providing the first in depth review of published intraspecific studies of brain size variation, we discuss the prospects embedded with interpopulational studies of brain size variation. In particular, the following topics are identified as deserving further attention: (i) studies focusing on disentangling the contributions of genes, environment, and their interactions on brain variation within and among populations, (ii) studies applying quantitative genetic tools to evaluate the relative importance of genetic and environmental factors on brain features at different ontogenetic stages, (iii) apart from utilizing simple gross estimates of brain size, future studies could benefit from use of neuroanatomical, neurohistological, and/or molecular methods in characterizing variation in brain size and architecture.  相似文献

Ultra-low-field (ULF) MRI (B 0 = 10–100 µT) typically suffers from a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). While SNR can be improved by pre-polarization and signal detection using highly sensitive superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) sensors, we propose to use the inter-dependency of the k-space data from highly parallel detection with up to tens of sensors readily available in the ULF MRI in order to suppress the noise. Furthermore, the prior information that an image can be sparsely represented can be integrated with this data consistency constraint to further improve the SNR. Simulations and experimental data using 47 SQUID sensors demonstrate the effectiveness of this data consistency constraint and sparsity prior in ULF-MRI reconstruction.  相似文献

Analysis of partial ADP/ATP Translocase gene (Aat) sequences from 11 species of Ranid frogs (Amphibia: Ranidae) identified multiple Aat gene copies. All frog species examined had at least one of the 2 Aat gene copies differing mainly by presence or absence of an approximately 85-bp intron sequence. The sequence data suggest that the gene variant with intron is the ancestral Aat form, whereas the other variants are retroposed copies. Surprisingly, a phylogenetic analysis suggests that multiple reptroposition events have taken place in the Ranid frogs. An analysis including sequences from Drosophila, zebra fish, Xenopus, mouse, and human indicated that all the frog Aat sequences form a monophyletic group with mammalian X-chromosomal Ant2 as a sister unit. Furthermore, the selection test suggested that different variants of the Aat gene appear to have evolved under different modes of evolution (viz., neutral, purifying, and positive selection), and the evolutionary history of different AAT variants appears to differ even among different species.  相似文献
