In a synthetic route that varies from the standard procedure requiring irradiation, the (η6-C6H5Cl)Cr(CO)2PPh3 complex is obtained upon reacting (η6-C6H5Cl)Cr(CO)3 with tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(0), CuI, and trimethylsilylphenylacetylene in triethylamine. The X-ray crystal structure of the yellow–orange crystals of (η6-C6H5Cl)Cr(CO)2PPh3 allows structural comparisons to related (arene)Cr(CO)2PR3 complexes.  相似文献

Little is known about processes regulating population dynamics in termites. We investigated the distribution of mound-colonies of the fungus-cultivating termite Macrotermes bellicosus (Smeathman) in two habitats in the Comoé National Park (Côte d'Ivoire) with nearest-neighbour analysis differentiating between different age classes. These results were compared with ecological data on processes influencing population dynamics. High mound densities were recorded in shrub savannah while only a few mounds were found in gallery forest. Mounds were distributed randomly in both habitats when all mounds were considered together, and when inhabited and uninhabited mounds were treated separately. However, distinctive non-random patterns were revealed in the savannah when we distinguished between different age classes. Small, young colonies were aggregated when they coexisted with larger, older colonies, which were more regularly distributed. This indicates that the distribution of older colonies is influenced by intraspecific competition whereas that of younger colonies is influenced by opposing factors that lead to aggregation. This is in accordance with ecological data. Food is a limiting resource for large colonies, while patchily distributed appropriate microclimatic conditions seem to be more important for young colonies. Colonies that had formerly coexisted (i.e. living colonies and recently dead colonies) showed aggregated, random and regular distribution patterns, suggesting several causes of mortality. Colonies that had never had contact with each other were randomly distributed and no specific regulation mechanism was implicated. These results show that different age classes seem to be regulated by different processes and that separation between age classes is necessary to reveal indicative spatial patterns in nearest-neighbour analysis.  相似文献

Variability in stream macroinvertebrates at multiple spatial scales   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10  
1. We intensively sampled 16 western Oregon streams to characterize: (1) the variability in macroinvertebrate assemblages at seven spatial scales; and (2) the change in taxon richness with increasing sampling effort. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) model calculated spatial variance components for taxon richness, total density, percent individuals of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera (EPT), percent dominance and Shannon diversity.
2. At the landscape level, ecoregion and among‐streams components dominated variance for most metrics, accounting for 43–72% of total variance. However, ecoregion accounted for very little variance in total density and 36% of the variance was attributable to differences between streams. For other metrics, variance components were more evenly divided between stream and ecoregion effects.
3. Within streams, approximately 70% of variance was associated with unstructured local spatial variation and not associated with habitat type or transect position. The remaining variance was typically split about evenly between habitat and transect. Sample position within a transect (left, centre or right) accounted for virtually none of the variance for any metric.
4. New taxa per stream increased rapidly with sampling effort with the first four to eight Surber samples (500–1000 individuals counted), then increased more gradually. After counting more than 50 samples, new taxa continued to be added in stream reaches that were 80 times as long as their mean wetted width. Thus taxon richness was highly dependent on sampling effort, and comparisons between sites or streams must be normalized for sampling effort.
5. Characterization of spatial variance structure is fundamental to designing sampling programmes where spatial comparisons range from local to regional scales. Differences in metric responses across spatial scales demonstrate the importance of designing sampling strategies and analyses capable of discerning differences at the scale of interest.  相似文献

Polymorphic microsatellite loci were developed for Western Hemlock [Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg], a prominent forest tree species in Western North America. Microsatellite‐enriched libraries were screened for (CA)n dinucleotide repeats from which 33 positive clones were sequenced. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers for 16 microsatellite loci were prepared and tested against DNA from unrelated Western Hemlock trees. The 12 most informative microsatellite loci are reported here. From four to 22 alleles per locus were observed, with an average expected heterozygousity of 0.799.  相似文献

IFN-β treatment is emerging as a potentially effective form of therapy in various immune-mediated conditions. The present review addresses the possible role of IFN-β in immune-mediated diseases such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Several placebo-controlled trials are discussed, as are the available immunological data that are relevant to this field. Review of these data provides evidence that IFN-β has some beneficial therapeutic effect in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis and might also have antirheumatic potential. This notion is supported by recent studies showing a critical role for IFN-β in bone homeostasis.  相似文献

Molecular studies have demonstrated that the murine AN2 antigen is the mouse homologue of the rat NG2 and human MCSP protein. The molecule is a single-pass transmembrane protein which carries a variable number of glyco- and glycosaminoglycan chains according to cell type and developmental stage. AN2/NG2 has two extracellular Laminin G-like domains which are classically involved in cell adhesion and recognition. It possesses a single PDZ binding motif in the short intracellular tail. The AN2/NG2 antigen is expressed by glial progenitor cells in developing and adult CNS and also by immature Schwann cells. Antibodies against AN2/NG2 inhibit the migration of antigen-positive cells in in vitroassays, suggesting that the molecule plays a role in migration. Many AN2/NG2-positive cells surround synapses in the developing and adult brain. A recently identified intracellular partner of AN2/NG2 is the glutamate receptor interacting protein GRIP, which binds to the GluRB subunit of the AMPA subclass of glutamate receptors. The AN2/NG2 protein may position AMPA receptors on perisynaptic glial cells towards active synapses by binding to a neuronal receptor. Many highly migratory neural tumors including melanomas express AN2/NG2. In the demyelinating disease Multiple Sclerosis, some patients synthesise antibodies against the protein. Such antibodies may play a pathological role by inhibiting the migration of oligodendrocyte progenitor cells to demyelinated axons thus blocking remyelination, as well as possibly interfering with glial neuronal signalling at synapses and nodes of Ranvier.  相似文献

The alarm behavior of worker and soldier castes of four European subterranean termite species of the genus Reticulitermes (R. santonensis, R. lucifugus, R. grassei, R. banyulensis) is described. In petri dish bioassays we presented filter papers with squashed soldier heads as an odor source to trigger a alarm reaction. Untreated filter papers were used as controls. The behavioral patterns were alike for all four species. In the control situation (no alarm), only occasional workers and few soldiers were seen walking in the petri dish. When the odor source was presented, a general state of alertness was observed, showing as higher activity and presence, zigzag running, antennation of nestmates, jittering and jerking, mandible snapping, head-banging, and attraction to the odor source. Workers were attracted within a few seconds (6.9–13.4 s); soldiers followed much later (18.5–64.6 s). Both workers and soldiers inspected the odor source only briefly (workers for 8.7–12.8 s, soldiers for 10.0–19.5 s), with the exception of R. santonensis, where soldiers stayed an average of 209.8 s. The number of individuals, of 50 workers and 3 soldiers, near the odor source averaged 6.0–9.2 workers and 1.2–2.3 soldiers. The presence of workers is crucial: without workers, a significant alarm reaction in soldiers could not be induced. The roles of soldier and worker castes of Reticulitermes species within alarm communication and the origin and nature of possible alarm signals are discussed.  相似文献

Marsh vegetation plays an important role in trophic ecology of estuaries. Once broken down to detritus, it is an important food source for manyorganisms. In Atlantic Coast marshes, the reed Phragmites australis hasbeen invading many areas once dominated by smooth cordgrass, Spartina alterniflora. In this study we evaluated the growth of and trophictransfer of metals to estuarine invertebrates when fed diets of detritus fromthese different plant species. Decaying leaves from populations of Phragmites, natural Spartina, and restored Spartina from boththe Hackensack Meadowlands, New Jersey, and the more pristineAccabonac Harbor of East Hampton, New York, were collected from themarsh surface in the spring. Decaying leaves were pureed and fed to thefiddler crabs Uca pugnax and U. pugilator, and to the grassshrimp Palaemonetes pugio. In fiddler crabs we monitored limbregeneration, molting and weight. U. pugilator regenerated limbs andmolted equally well on all six diets. Most of the U. pugnax arrestedgrowth midway through regeneration on all 6 diets. A repeat experimentwith smaller crabs, which did complete the process, found no consistentdifferences among the six diets and control food, although control food andPhragmites detritus had higher N concentrations than the Spartinadetritus. Grass shrimp fed all six diets did not survive beyond 3 weeks. Inanother experiment using HM sediments from each vegetation type(containing detritus, meiofauna, and microflora), survival was equally highamong treatments and the shrimp fed sediments from the restored Spartina site or control food grew better than those fed sediments fromthe Phragmites or natural Spartina sites. Although metalconcentrations in detritus varied between sites and plant species, the crabsof each group did not differ in metal concentrations after the feedingexperiment. Our data do not support the general assumption that Phragmites leaf detritus is of poorer nutritional quality than Spartinaalterniflora leaf detritus to estuarine consumers.  相似文献
