Darstellung und Charakterisierung eines Lipoproteins mit Antigenwirksamkeit im Lp-System

Zusammenfassung Unter Anwendung verfeinerter Trennverfahren wurde das -Lp(a+)-Lipoprotein des menschlichen Serums in immunologisch und elektrophoretisch reiner Form dargestellt. Es wurde hinsichtlich seiner Lipidzusammensetzung analysiert und mit ebenfalls immunologisch und elektrophoretisch rein erhaltenen -Lp(a-)- und ₁-Lipoproteinen verglichen.

Separation and characterization of a lipoprotein with antigenic activity in the Lp-system

Summary Through application of refined separation techniques the -Lp(a+)-lipoprotein of human serum was characterized in an immunologically and electrophoretically pure form. It was analyzed with regard to its lipid-composition and compared to likewise electrophoretically and immunologically pure -Lp(a-)- and ₁-lipoproteins.

Ultrastructural localization of zinc in rat exocrine pancreas by autoradiography

Summary ⁶⁵Zn was infused at a constant rate for 10 days into a rat. Glutaraldehyde fixed, Epon-araldite embedded ultrathin sections of pancreatic tissue were coated with Ilford L4 emulsion and at 211 days exposure were developed. Silver grains were found over the zymogen granules and over the rough endoplasmic reticulum of exocrine cells. Islet tissue was not observed in these studies. The failure of other zinc localization methods to demonstrate zinc in acinar tissue is discussed as are some of the pitfalls of the autoradiographic method and suggestions for future improvement.Published with the approval of the Director of the Wisconsin Agricultural Experiment Station, Madison. The DNA of Acanthamoeba spp.; A Method for Extraction and Its Characterization

SYNOPSIS. A method is described which permits the recovery of a high yield of undegraded DNA from Acanthamoeba castellanii. The DNA of A. castellanii is comprised of 2 species: the buoyant density of the major component is 1.720 and of the minor component, 1.693. The renaturation characteristics of the minor component suggest that it is of mitochondrial origin. Two components are also present in the DNA of A. palestinensis, A. polyphaga and A. astronyxis. The buoyant densities of major and minor components differ between species.     

Carbohydrate Transport in Trypanosoma gambiense*

SYNOPSIS. The uptake of ¹⁴C-labeled carbohydrates by Trypanosoma gambiense was studied. Glucose, mannose, glycerol, 2-deoxyglucose and fructose were rapidly absorbed by the parasite, and all had saturation kinetics. The glucose analog 3-O-methylglucose was not taken up by T. gambiense. Competitive inhibition experiments indicate that there are 2 transport loci for the tested substrates. It is suggested that there is a “glucose site” thru which glucose, mannose and glycerol, but not fructose, are transported and a “fructose site” thru which only fructose is transported. The specificity of the glucose-transporting mechanism appears to differ from those of other animals.
