The application of an averaging method to intermittently modified and endogenously generated spike activities of neurons in mollusc ganglia

The averaging method was applied for the analysis of the effect of intermittent light as well as for the analysis of the spontaneous spike activities of burster neurons in Helix pomatia and Aplysia depilans ganglia. Owing to such analyses by means of which the unwanted effects of permanently present noise (i.e., irregular frequency modulation of neuron impulse activity) were diminished, the dynamics of the neurons reaction to light and the longer time effects of intermittent illumination on neurons spontancous activity could be observed. The functional characteristics of burster neurons were determined by averaging and the least squares and equalization methods. The results were presented in the table and in two average curves which are asymmetrical with a horizontal asymptote. From these data it was concluded that the dynamics of the spontaneous activity of the two burster neurons in both specia is similar. The possibilities and limitations of the method in physiological analyses are discussed.     

Eiweißkristalloide inOpuntia inermis

Zusammenfassung In den Epidermiszellen der Blätter vonOpuntia inermis wurden neben den X-Körpern und Eiweißspindeln auch echte Eiweißkristalle in Form rhombenförmiger Plättchen gefunden. Diese Kristalle sind vermutlich im Zellsafte lokalisiert.Die spindelhaltigen Exemplare vonOpuntia inermis unterschieden sich auch dadurch von anderen spindelführenden Kakteen, daß sie auch in Schließzellen Eiweißspindeln enthielten. Das Ausbleiben der Eiweißspindeln in den Schließzellen der Kakteen ist demnach keine regelmäßige Erscheinung.Prof. Dr. V.Vouk zum 70. Geburtstag gewidmet.

Mutation affecting normal colony formation inEscherichia coli K-12

The effect of a mutation in a gene located near thepro marker and determining the normal colony formation and the cell density inEscherichia coli has been analyzed. Thencf mutation has no effect on the permeability of the cell to actinomycin D. On the other hand, a higher level of ATP and a defect in the accumulation of the reserve material in the mutant cell were detected.     

Xylosandrus germanus in Central Europe: Spread into and within the Czech Republic

Invasive organisms represent great threats to ecosystems and great challenges to forest management. In Europe, the black timber bark beetle (Xylosandrus germanus) is an invasive secondary pest that mostly attacks the logs of felled trees. We showed the invasion history for Europe and using many local surveys, we summarize the current distribution and other available information on X. germanus in the Czech Republic. We report that this species is distributed from the lowlands to the mountains in the Czech Republic; it is widespread in the eastern half of the country, where it is more abundant in the warmer south and southeast areas than in the cooler areas. Most (78%) of the known localities are at elevation below 400 m a.s.l. Although an ice storm greatly increased X. germanus abundance near the border with Austria, its high abundance did not result in damage to standing trees. Presence of X. germanus in the Czech Republic for over 10 years has not led to heavy tree infestation.
