Chemical communication systems controlling reproductive behaviour have been shown in a number of marine polychaetes. This study investigated the use of sex pheromones to coordinate spawning behaviour in gravid lugworms (Arenicola marina). Lugworms typically reproduce in the autumn, during low water of spring tides, and often exhibit epidemic spawning. Females release gametes within the burrow whereas males deposit spermatozoa on to the beach surface. The incoming tide dilutes the spermatozoa and transports them to the females'' burrows. Sperm is diluted rapidly and sperm concentrations fall below the minimum required for fertilization within a few minutes. The present investigation establishes the existence of chemical signals synchronizing spawning for the first time in an iteroparous polychaete. The process can be divided into two steps, the induction of gamete release by waterborne chemical cues and burrow irrigation behaviour in females: burrow irrigation representing the means by which spermatozoa are carried to the eggs. In both sexes, the release of gametes can be induced by exposure to sea water into which other individuals had previously spawned. Males also respond to odour compounds from other males. The overall effect of the chemical signals results in synchronized, mass spawning of a population. 相似文献

Abstract Species-specific oligonucleotide probes and a universal oligonucleotide probe derived from sequences of 16S rRNA were hybridised to chromosomal DNA from Streptococcus agalactiae, S. dysgalactiae, S. parauberis and S. uberis following digestion with Eco RI. Due to the presence of a unique Eco RI site in each 16S rRNA gene, the number of hybridised fragments was indicative of the number of 16S rRNA genes. Southern hybridisation indicated six 16S rRNA genes in ten isolates of S. agalactiae , five genes in ten isolates of S. uberis , five genes in six isolates and six in another isolate of S. dysgalactiae , and six genes in four isolates of S. parauberis . For a fifth isolate of S. parauberis , six 16S rRNA genes were indicated by the universal probe but only five when hybridised to the species-specific probe, indicating sequence variation (microheterogeneity) within the probe target region. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine whether hemorrhage altered the caspase-3 activity and the ATP levels in rat lung and ileum tissues and determine whether resuscitation with lactated Ringer solution (LR) or whole blood (WB) reversed these changes. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were briefly anesthetized with isoflurane, and their mean arterial blood pressure was reduced from 110 to 40 mmHg by bleeding. The bled rat was then resuscitated with LR or autologous WB to bring mean arterial blood pressure back to 80 mmHg. Lung and ileum tissues were removed at the end of hemorrhage or at the end of the resuscitation period for specified bioassays. Hemorrhage increased cellular caspase-3 activity in the lung and the ileum. After the hemorrhaged rats received LR or WB, caspase-3 activity returned to the basal level in the lung and ileum, respectively. Likewise, hemorrhage decreased cellular ATP levels in lung and ileum. After LR or WB resuscitation, the cellular ATP level returned to the basal level only in the lung resuscitated with LR. The increased caspase-3 activity was associated with the increased expression of caspase-3 mRNA, which also returned to normal levels after either resuscitation. Similarly, hemorrhage increased the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase and Kruppel-like factor 6 and decreased expression of Kruppel-like factor 4. Subsequent LR resuscitation normalized the expression of these genes in the lung tissue. Our results demonstrate that resuscitation with LR can reverse the expression of genes and their products that are thought to contribute to hemorrhage-induced lung injury. 相似文献

Iqg1p is a component of the actomyosin contractile ring that is required for actin recruitment and septum deposition. Cells lacking Iqg1p function have an altered bud-neck structure and fail to form a functional actomyosin contractile ring resulting in a block to cytokinesis and septation. Here it is demonstrated that increased expression of the actin cytoskeleton associated protein Bsp1p bypasses the requirement for contractile ring function. This also correlates with reduced bud-neck width and remedial septum formation. Increased expression of this protein in a temperature-sensitive iqg1-1 background causes remedial septum formation at the bud neck that is reliant upon chitin synthase III activity and restores cell separation. The observed suppression correlates with a restoration of normal bud-neck structure. While Bsp1p is a component of the contractile ring, its recruitment to the bud neck is not required for the observed suppression. Loss of Bsp1p causes a brief delay in the redistribution of the actin cytoskeleton normally observed at the end of actin ring contraction. Compromise of Iqg1p function, in the absence of Bsp1p function, leads to a profound change in the distribution of actin and the pattern of cell growth accompanied by a failure to complete cytokinesis and cell separation. 相似文献

Prolonged exposure to conspecific song stimulates gonadal function and reproductive hormone secretion in female birds but few studies have investigated the physiological effects of conspecific song exposure on males outside of short-term, aggressive interactions. We exposed male Rufous-winged Sparrows, Aimophila carpalis, either to conspecific song (CS Song), to heterospecific song (Black-throated Sparrow, Amphispiza bilineata; HS Song), or to no recorded song (No Song) for 59 consecutive days (two h per day). Birds were exposed to short days (8L:16D) for the first 21 days of treatment and were then transferred to long days (13L:11D) for the remaining 38 days. During long day exposure, CS Song birds experienced faster growth of testes than HS Song and No Song birds. HS Song birds also grew their testes faster than No Song birds. Plasma luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone did not differ between CS Song and No Song birds. However, plasma LH was higher in HS Song birds compared to other groups. There were no differences in hypothalamic immunocytochemical labeling for gonadotropin-releasing hormone, its precursor proGnRH, or gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone, nor were there differences in two song control nuclei volumes (HVC and RA) between CS Song and No Song treatment groups. Furthermore, we found no effect of heterospecific song on free-living Rufous-winged Sparrow aggressive behaviors. These data indicate that long-term exposure to auditory stimuli, such as song, can influence the reproductive system of male songbirds and different types of auditory stimuli can have differential effects on reproductive function. 相似文献

Positive autoregulation in gene regulation networks has been shown in the past to exhibit stochastic behavior, including stochastic bistability, in which an initially uniform cell population develops into two distinct subpopulations. However, positive autoregulation is often mediated by signal molecules, which have not been considered in prior stochastic analysis of these networks. Here we propose both a full model of such a network that includes a signal molecule, and a simplified model in which the signal molecules have been eliminated through the use of two simplifications. The simplified model is amenable to direct mathematical analysis that shows that stochastic bistability is possible. We use stochastic Petri networks for simulating both types of models. The simulation results show that 1), the stochastic behavior of the two models is similar; and 2), that the analytical steady-state distribution of the simplified model matches well the transient results at times equal to that of a cell generation. A discussion of the simplifications we used in the context of the results indicates the importance of the signal molecule number as a factor determining the presence of bistability. This is further supported from a deterministic steady-state analysis of the full model that is shown to be a useful indicator of potential stochastic bistability. We use the regulation of SdiA in Escherichia coli as an example, due to the importance of this protein and of the signal molecule, a bacterial autoinducer, that is involved. However, the use of kinetic parameter values representing typical cellular activities make the conclusions applicable to other signal-mediated positive autoregulation networks as well. 相似文献
