Acute experiments on cats enabled spontaneous epileptogenic foci to be produced by means of electrical stimulation of the cerebral cortex. The central area of the suprasylvian gyrus was stimulated by 5-sec stimuli at 3-sec intervals. The strength of neuronal response gradually increased until spontaneous electrical activity set in as stimulation was set at a fixed intensity which had originally evoked local residual discharge at stimulation foci only, i.e., the phenomenon of "kindling" was observed. When "kindling" was produced in the cortical area under study, bursts of spindle activity were recorded on all ECoG with increasing frequency. Recordings of spindle activity then changed to a "spike-wave" pattern of activity. The results of these investigations, which were performed on an isolated strip of cortex, point to the involvement of subcortical structures in mediating "kindling" of the cortical focus.Institute of Clinical and Experimental Neurology, Ministry of Public Health of the Georgian SSR, Tbilisi. To investigate mechanisms of formation of the electrocorticographic slow negative potential (SNP) evoked by direct electrical stimulation of the cortical surface, poststimulus single unit activity in the stimulated area was studied in anesthetized cats and changes in SNP in the depth of the cortex were analyzed. The results showed that membrane hyperpolarization, accompanied by cessation of action potential generation, develops parallel with SNP in neuron bodies in the stimulated area. Investigation of the nature of this hyperpolarization showed that during its development excitability of the neuron and resistance of the postsynaptic membrane fall. It is concluded from the results that this membrane hyperpolarization is an indicator of IPSP development in the neuron bodies. The results of laminar recording showed that SNP may diminish or even disappear in the depth of the cortex without subsequent reversal. Determination of dipoles formed along an axis perpendicular to the cortical surface showed that SNP has one source and two sinks, which are located symmetrically relative to it. The presence of two symmetrical sinks must indicate an active source, formed as a result of hyperpolarization of the neuron membrane. It has been well established that “normal” pregnancy gives rise to much anxiety whose source is variable. When not adequately dealt with, the anxiety may masquerade in the guise of physical symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, or, more often, as disquieting emotional counterparts, like irritability and depression.A study was undertaken in the outpatient obstetrical department at U.C.L.A. utilizing a group psychotherapeutic approach. The results helped the patients and offered training to staff in dealing with emotional problems of pregnancy. Patients were seen in groups of seven, twice a month for one-hour sessions. Participating in each group were an obstetrical resident, a psychiatric resident and a nurse. The subject material was not selected beforehand. Groups were similar in that the expected time of delivery of the patients was approximately the same. Results of the study suggested that the much needed emotional support may be supplied in this way with little to no additional time expenditure on the part of the physician or nurse.  相似文献

Apples ( Malus domestica Borkh.) were heated for 4 days at 38°C immediately after harvest and then placed at 20°C for 7–10 days. Protein synthesis, ethylene production and fruit softening were reversibly inhibited by the heat treatment. Fruit respiration, membrane permeability and chlorophyll degradation in the fruit peel were enhanced during the treatment. The heat-treated apples ripened normally but more slowly than untreated apple We hypothesize that heat treatment differentially affects processes which normally increase simultaneously during fruit ripening, by inhibiting those processes which require tie novo protein synthesis and enhancing those that do not.  相似文献

Endothelin has been characterized as a potent constricting factor. The purpose of this study was to investigate possible dilator effects of this peptide and to examine whether dilator responses occur through an endothelium-mediated mechanism in guinea pig coronary resistance vessels and isolated aortic rings. Changes in perfusion pressure after bolus injections of endothelin were measured using a constant-flow modified Langendorff preparation with a transducer between the flow pump and the heart. An immediate fall in perfusion pressure, averaging 6 mmHg, was observed after injection of endothelin (10(-14)-10(-12) moles). This effect was maximal at 1 minute and tended to return toward baseline levels within 4 minutes. In response to endothelin (10(-9) M), isolated aortic rings relaxed 35% after being contracted with prostaglandin F2 alpha (10(-7) M). In both preparations, dilation was converted to constriction after endothelium damage by oxygen radicals or endothelium removal (mechanical rubbing). Dilator responses to endothelin were blocked by pretreatment for 30 minutes with indomethacin (14 microM) in the presence of an intact endothelium in coronary resistance vessels, whereas in the abdominal aorta they were not. We conclude that endothelin has significant dilator properties and that this effect is opposed by its constrictor action at higher doses. In addition, dilator responses to endothelin require an intact endothelium in both coronary vessels and abdominal aorta. Finally, endothelin-induced dilation in coronary resistance vessels appears to occur through a cyclooxygenase product-mediated mechanism.  相似文献

The Alu family of intersperesed repeats is comprised of ovr 500,000 members which may be divided into discrete subfamilies based upon mutations held in common between members. Distinct subfamilies of Alu sequences have amplified within the human genome in recent evolutionary history. Several individual Alu family members have amplified so recently in human evolution that they are variable as to presence and absence at specific loci within different human populations. Here, we report on the distribution of six polymorphic Alu insetions in a survey of 563 individuals from 14 human population groups across several continents. Our results indicate that these polymorphic Alu insertions probably have an African origin and that there is a much smaller amount of genetic variation between European populations than that found between other populations groups. The transfer of a nucleus into a cytoplasm of a genetically foreign cell and its subsequent multiplication in the cytoplasm of this cell characterize most parasitic red algal species and their interactions with specific red algal hosts. Nuclei enter the host's cytoplasm upon cell fusion of parasite and host cell; here, they replicate, are spread to contiguous host cells, and ultimately are packaged into spores that reinfect other host thalli. In this study, we examined whether the proplastids and mitochondria that occur in these red algal adelphoparasites are acquired from their host or whether they are unique to the parasite and are brought into the host along with the parasite nucleus. To establish their origins and fates, plastid and mitochondrial restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) of parasite cells were compared with those of their host plastid and mitochondrial DNA in three host and parasite pairs. For plastids, no RFLP differences were found between hosts and parasites, supporting an earlier conclusion, based on microscopic studies, that the proplastids of parasites are acquired from their hosts. For mitochondria, characteristic RFLP differences were detected between host and parasite for two of the pairs of species but not for the third. Evidence of the evolutionary difference between hosts and their parasites was shown by RFLP differences between nuclear ribosomal repeat regions.  相似文献
