In many wild animal populations, hosts are at risk of parasites and malnutrition and resource costs of defence may be difficult to afford. We postulate that proteins, important in homeostasis and immunity, play a complex but central role in condition dependence and resource costs of mammalian immune defence. To test this, we measured plasma concentrations of albumin, total proteins. Self‐reactive antibodies and parasite‐specific IgG in female Soay sheep. Using a principal component analysis, we found a new metric of condition reflecting individual variation in acquisition, assimilation and/or recycling of plasma proteins that predicted overwinter survival. Controlling for this metric, an age‐dependent trade‐off between antibody titres and protein reserves emerged, indicating costs of mounting an antibody response: younger individuals survived best when prioritising immunity while older individuals fared better when maintaining high‐protein nutritional plane. These findings suggest fascinating roles for protein acquisition and allocation in influencing survival in wild animal populations. 相似文献

Meiotic division in Fomes annosus is similar to that reported for other higher fungi. Nuclei in dikaryotic cells prior to fusion in the basidia are long, thin, and double-stranded with paired heterochromatic areas. Various stages of prophase are similar to those in higher plants. At metaphase I and II seven pairs of chromosomes are aligned in a circle and the chromatids migrate to opposite poles established by two centrioles. The centrioles function in the movement of the nuclei in the basidium, nuclear alignment prior to fusion, establishment of poles for division, and the migration of the nuclei into the basidiospore. The pineal hormone melatonin is potentially useful in the treatment of disorders, especially sleep disorders, associated with circadian rhythm disturbance. We have examined its effects on sleep, mood, and behaviour in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study of a small group of police officers working spans of seven successive night shifts. Compared to placebo, and to no treatment, melatonin (5 mg) taken at the desired bedtime improved problems related to sleep and increased alertness during working hours, especially during the early morning. In letter-target performance tests visual search speed and accuracy were either unchanged or slightly improved. Memory scanning speed and perception of mental load were adversely affected. This preliminary study suggests that melatonin has beneficial effects on sleep and alertness, but that its effects on performance need careful evaluation. 相似文献

Mice living in tussock grass on a remote headland of the South Atlantic island of South Georgia (54°S) where the mean temperature is less than 2°C and the monthly average below 0°C for four months each year have been studied. They are big animals (although not as large as those on some North Atlantic islands) and have much brown fat, showing their response to their cold environment. Only two out of 27 gene loci scored electrophoretically were segregating (3·4% heterozygosity); these ( Es-6, Got-2 ) are four cross-over units apart on chromosome 8, and were in strong linkage disequilibrium. There were marked changes in allele frequencies with age which go in opposite directions in males and females, showing the action of stabilizing selection: Es-6 a increased from 16% in males of less than three months, to 35% in older animals; it declined in females from 36 to 19%. 相似文献

Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent form of regulated necrosis associated with lipid peroxidation. Despite its key role in the inflammatory outcome of ferroptosis, little is known about the molecular events leading to the disruption of the plasma membrane during this type of cell death. Here we show that a sustained increase in cytosolic Ca2+ is a hallmark of ferroptosis that precedes complete bursting of the cell. We report that plasma membrane damage leading to ferroptosis is associated with membrane nanopores of a few nanometers in radius and that ferroptosis, but not lipid peroxidation, can be delayed by osmoprotectants. Importantly, Ca2+ fluxes during ferroptosis induce the activation of the ESCRT-III-dependent membrane repair machinery, which counterbalances the kinetics of cell death and modulates the immunological signature of ferroptosis. Our findings with ferroptosis provide a unifying concept that sustained increase of cytosolic Ca2+ prior to plasma membrane rupture is a common feature of regulated types of necrosis and position ESCRT-III activation as a general protective mechanism in these lytic cell death pathways.Subject terms: Cell biology, Molecular biology 相似文献
