Asymmetric inhibition by phlorizin of halide movements across the red blood cell membrane

Using human red cell ghosts, it was shown that external phlorizin inhibits Cl⁻ and I⁻ equilibrium exchange. Internal phlorizin has little effect on I⁻ exchange and no detectable effect on Cl⁻ exchange. This asymmetry is similar to that observed with the much more slowly exchanging SO₄²⁻ and different from that of sugars like l-arabinose or d-xylose which are inhibited by phlorizin from either surface.     

High-performance liquid chromatographic analysis of biogenic amines in biological materials as o-phthalaldehyde derivatives

A remarkably sensitive, simple and selective reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method has been developed, allowing, for the first time, the direct measurement of histamine, norepinephrine, octopamine, normetanephrine, dopamine, serotonin and tyramine in a single sample of plasma (2 ml), tissue (0.2 g), or urine. The biogenic amines were modified by pre-column derivatization with o-phthalaldehyde which stabilizes the molecules, aids in extraction, and improves HPLC detection at the nanogram level. To minimize losses during the sampling procedure a careful collection procedure was designed.     

Anaerobic extremely thermophilic carboxydotrophic bacteria in hydrotherms of Kuril Islands

A new group of extremely thermophilic, obligately anaerobic, carboxydotrophic eubacteria is described. The organisms are characterized by a novel type of chemotrophic metabolism in thermophilic environments. They grow at temperatures up to 80–85°C chemolithotrophically with 100% CO in the gas phase as the sole energy source. The CO oxidation is coupled to H₂ and CO₂ formation according to the equation CO+H₂O → H₂+CO₂. No other products of metabolism are produced. The group of CO-utilizing, H₂-producing anaerobes includes diverse bacteria. They are non-sporeforming rods differing in morphology, CO uptake rates, habitats, and maximum growth temperatures. The new carboxydotrophic thermophilic anaerobes are widely distributed in freshwater and coastal marine hydrotherms of the Kuril Islands. Offprint requests to: V. A. Svetlichny.     

Ultrastructural Visualization of Surface Carbohydrate Structures on Mycoplasma Membranes by Concanavalin A

Surface carbohydrates of Mycoplasma mycoides var. capri were made visible by the cytochemical staining procedure with concanavalin A, horseradish peroxidase, and diaminobenzidine.     

Effects of diode laser therapy on the acellular dermal matrix

Acellular dermal matrix (ADM) was subcutaneously implanted into calvarian skin of male Wistar rats (n = 40). Low-level laser (λ 685 nm, 4 J/cm²) was locally applied in experimental group (n = 20) above the skin flap. Grafts were harvested at 1, 3, 7 and 14 days after surgery and underwent histological analyses. In treated animals, the extent of edema and the number of inflammatory cells were reduced (P < 0.05). The amount of collagen in graft treated with low-level laser were significantly higher than those of controls (P < 0.05) and were statistically more prominent on the 14th day after surgery. The mean count of fibroblasts was significantly higher in the low-laser therapy group within the 3rd day, showing a marked influx of fibroblasts into area. In conclusion, wound healing of the ADM appear to be positively affected by laser therapy.
