In 2001, Urbani and Palmer published a review of the epidemiological situation of helminthiases in the countries of the Western Pacific Region of the World Health Organization indicating the control needs in the region. Six years after this inspiring article, large-scale preventive chemotherapy for the control of helminthiasis has scaled up dramatically in the region. This paper analyzes the most recent published and unpublished country information on large-scale preventive chemotherapy and summarizes the progress made since 2000. Almost 39 million treatments were provided in 2006 in the region for the control of helminthiasis: nearly 14 million for the control of lymphatic filariasis, more than 22 million for the control of soil-transmitted helminthiasis, and over 2 million for the control of schistosomiasis. In general, control of these helminthiases is progressing well in the Mekong countries and Pacific Islands. In China, despite harboring the majority of the helminth infections of the region, the control activities have not reached the level of coverage of countries with much more limited financial resources. The control of food-borne trematodes is still limited, but pilot activities have been initiated in China, Lao People's Democratic Republic, and Vietnam. 相似文献

Fourteen species of non-pathogenic corynebacteria have been examined for the presence of DNases. Seven of the species were found to be DNase positive when assayed in Toluidine Blue-DNA-containing agar whereas only one, Corynebacterium callunae, could be detectable as DNase positive when the test was performed in DNA-methyl green-containing agar. Electrophoretic patterns obtained from sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gels containing DNA showed the presence of one or two bands of nucleolytic activity in two species of Brevibacterium and of several bands in C. callunae. A recent demonstration of markedly reduced (-50%) activity of cytochrome oxidase (CO; complex 4), the terminal enzyme of the mitochondrial enzyme transport chain, in platelets of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) suggested the possibility of a systemic and etiologically fundamental CO defect in AD. To determine whether a CO deficiency occurs in AD brain, we measured the activity of CO in homogenates of autopsied brain regions of 19 patients with AD and 30 controls matched with respect to age, postmortem time, sex, and, as indices of agonal status, brain pH and lactic acid concentration. Mean CO activity in AD brain was reduced in frontal (-26%: p less than 0.01), temporal (-17%; p less than 0.05), and parietal (-16%; not significant, p = 0.055) cortices. In occipital cortex and putamen, mean CO levels were normal, whereas in hippocampus, CO activity, on average, was nonsignificantly elevated (20%). The reduction of CO activity, which is tightly coupled to neuronal metabolic activity, could be explained by hypofunction of neurons, neuronal or mitochondrial loss, or possibly by a more primary, but region-specific, defect in the enzyme itself. The absence of a CO activity reduction in all of the examined brain areas does not support the notion of a generalized brain CO abnormality. Although the functional significance of a 16-26% cerebral cortical CO deficit in human brain is not known, a deficiency of this key energy-metabolizing enzyme could reduce energy stores and thereby contribute to the brain dysfunction and neurodegenerative processes in AD. 相似文献

Activities of prevalent protein phosphatases decreased by nearly 95% and those of individual protein kinases were differentially reduced at low temperature. Inhibition of phosphatase activity at temperatures below 12°C resulted in marked hyperphosphorylation of a 58-kDa protein (PP58). The temperature threshold for hyperphosphorylation of PP58 coincided with the known threshold for cold-induced calcium influx. Since calcium influx is triggered by several environmental stresses, we propose that the observed direct effects of cold on the phosphorylation of specific proteins enable cells to couple a shared calcium signal to a cold-specific transduction pathway. 相似文献

We analyzed the impact of ethylene and auxin disturbances on callus, shoots and Agrobacterium rhizogenes-induced hairy root formation in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.). The auxin low-sensitivity dgt mutation showed little hairy root initiation, whereas the ethylene low-sensitivity Nr mutation did not differ from the control Micro-Tom cultivar. Micro-Tom and dgt hairy roots containing auxin sensitivity/biosynthesis rol and aux genes formed prominent callus onto media supplemented with cytokinin. Under the same conditions, Nr hairy roots did not form callus. Double mutants combining Rg1, a mutation conferring elevated shoot formation capacity, with either dgt or Nr produced explants that formed shoots with little callus proliferation. The presence of rol + aux genes in Rg1 hairy roots prevented shoot formation. Taken together, the results suggest that although ethylene does not affect hairy root
induction, as auxin does, it may be necessary for auxin-induced callus formation in tomato. Moreover, excess auxin prevents

Obesity is considered as a strong risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. 3D-wall motion tracking echocardiography (3D-WMT) provides information regarding different parameters of left ventricular (LV) myocardial deformation. Our aim was to assess the presence of early myocardial deformation abnormalities in nonselected obese children free from other cardiovascular risk factors. Thirty consecutive nonselected obese children and 42 healthy volunteer children were enrolled. None of them had any cardiovascular risk factor. Every subject underwent a 2D-echo examination and a 3D-WMT study. Mean age was 13.9 ± 2.56 and 13.25 ± 2.68 years in the nonobese and obese groups, respectively (59.7% and 40.3% male). Statistically significant differences were found for: interventricular septum thickness, LV posterior wall thickness, LV end-diastolic volume, LV end-systolic volume, left atrium volume, LV mass, and lateral annulus peak velocity. Regarding the results obtained by 3D-WMT assessment, all the evaluated parameters were statistically significantly different between the two groups. When the influence of obesity on the different echocardiographic variables was evaluated by means of multivariate logistic regression analysis, the strongest relationship with obesity was found for LV average circumferential strain (β-coefficient: 0.74; r(2): 0.55; P: 0.003). Thus, obesity cardiomyopathy is associated not only with structural cardiac changes, but also with myocardial deformation changes. Furthermore, this association occurs as early as in the childhood and it is independent from any other cardiovascular risk factor. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a bioactive polyphenol in green tea, may augment metabolic and vascular actions of insulin. Therefore, we investigated effects of EGCG treatment to simultaneously improve cardiovascular and metabolic function in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR; model of metabolic syndrome with hypertension, insulin resistance, and overweight). In acute studies, EGCG (1-100 microM) elicited dose-dependent vasodilation in mesenteric vascular beds (MVB) isolated from SHR ex vivo that was inhibitable by N(omega)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME; nitric oxide synthase antagonist) or wortmannin [phosphatidylinositol (PI) 3-kinase inhibitor]. In chronic studies, 9-wk-old SHR were treated by gavage for 3 wk with EGCG (200 mg.kg(-1).day(-1)), enalapril (30 mg.kg(-1).day(-1)), or vehicle. A separate group of SHR receiving L-NAME (80 mg/l in drinking water) was treated for 3 wk with either EGCG or vehicle. Vasodilator actions of insulin were significantly improved in MVB from EGCG- or enalapril-treated SHR (when compared with vehicle-treated SHR). Both EGCG and enalapril therapy significantly lowered systolic blood pressure (SBP) in SHR. EGCG therapy of SHR significantly reduced infarct size and improved cardiac function in Langendorff-perfused hearts exposed to ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. In SHR given L-NAME, beneficial effects of EGCG on SBP and I/R were not observed. Both enalapril and EGCG treatment of SHR improved insulin sensitivity and raised plasma adiponectin levels. We conclude that acute actions of EGCG to stimulate production of nitric oxide from endothelium using PI 3-kinase-dependent pathways may explain, in part, beneficial effects of EGCG therapy to simultaneously improve metabolic and cardiovascular pathophysiology in SHR. These findings may be relevant to understanding potential benefits of green tea consumption in patients with the metabolic syndrome. 相似文献
