In this article, the upper cervical spine remains recovered from the Sima de los Huesos (SH) middle Pleistocene site in the Sierra de Atapuerca (Burgos, Spain) are described and analyzed. To date, this site has yielded more than 5000 human fossils belonging to a minimum of 28 individuals of the species Homo heidelbergensis. At least eleven individuals are represented by the upper cervical (C1 and C2) specimens: six adults and five subadults, one of which could represent an adolescent individual. The most complete adult vertebrae (three atlases and three axes) are described, measured, and compared with other fossil hominins and modern humans. These six specimens are associated with one another and represent three individuals. In addition, one of these sets of cervical vertebrae is associated with Cranium 5 (Individual XXI) from the site. The metric analysis demonstrates that the Sima de los Huesos atlases and axes are metrically more similar to Neandertals than to our modern human comparative sample. The SH atlases share with Neandertals a sagittally elongated canal. The most remarkable feature of the SH (and Neandertal) axes is that they are craniocaudally low and mediolaterally wide compared to our modern male sample. Morphologically, the SH sample shares with Neandertals a higher frequency of caudally projected anterior atlas arch, which could reflect greater development of the longus colli muscle. In other features, such as the frequency of weakly developed tubercles for the attachment of the transverse ligament of the atlas, the Sima de los Huesos fossils show intermediate frequencies between our modern comparative samples and the Neandertals, which could represent the primitive condition. Our results are consistent with the previous phylogenetic interpretation of H. heidelbergensis as an exclusively European species, ancestral only to H. neanderthalensis.  相似文献

A key issue in the treatment of many cancers is the development of resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs. Resistance mechanisms are numerous and complex. One of them is mediated by the overexpression of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters able to efflux drugs out of the tumor cell. The last two decades have seen notable growth of knowledge concerning the involvement of ABC transporters in resistance to chemotherapy. This review emphasizes these transporters, their clinical relevance and the diagnostic methods and strategies to circumvent multidrug resistance (MDR) mediated by ABC transporters.  相似文献

We have aimed at detecting prelaying maternal effects on nestling antibody defences and growth through experimental food supplementation of female pied flycatchers Ficedula hypoleuca and subsequent exchange of whole clutches with control nests. The levels of immunoglobulins and the mass and size of chicks at 12 days of age were ascertained. This is the first study controlling for maternal incubation effects by exchanging eggs rather than nestlings. Our prediction is that the females' availability of pre-laying nutritional resources affects offspring immune capacity and growth through maternal effects in the eggs when conditions during incubation and rearing are controlled for. Nestling immunoglobulin Y (IgY) levels and tarsus length were indeed positively associated with maternal food supplementation at laying. The only rearing environmental effect detected was that of mite infestation which affected both IgY levels and growth of nestlings. Nestlings that recruited to the population in the subsequent 2 years had higher IgY levels than those that did not. Maternal adaptations for allocating resources to eggs play an important role in moulding offspring phenotypes and may affect their survival prospects.  相似文献

Rapid methods for the characterization of biomass for energy purpose utilization are fundamental. In this work, near infrared spectroscopy is used to measure ash and char content of various types of biomass. Very strong models were developed, independently of the type of biomass, to predict ash and char content by near infrared spectroscopy and multivariate analysis. Several statistical approaches such as principal component analysis (PCA), orthogonal signal correction (OSC) treated PCA and partial least squares (PLS), Kernel PCA and PLS were tested in order to find the best method to deal with near infrared data to classify and predict these biomass characteristics. The model with the highest coefficient of correlation and the lowest RMSEP was obtained with OSC-treated Kernel PLS method.  相似文献

Recognition of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), the endotoxin of gram-negative bacteria, by microglia occurs through its binding to specific receptors, cluster of differentiation 14 and toll-like receptor-4. LPS binding to these receptors triggers the synthesis of proinflammatory cytokines that coordinate the brain innate immune response to protect the CNS of the infection. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a n -3 polyunsaturated fatty acid highly incorporated in the brain, is a potent immunomodulator. In this study, we investigated whether DHA modulates LPS receptor localization and, as a consequence, LPS-induced signaling pathway and proinflammatory cytokine production. We demonstrated that DHA, when added exogenously, is specifically enriched in membrane phospholipids, but not in raft lipids of microglial cells. DHA incorporation in membrane impaired surface presentation of LPS receptors cluster of differentiation 14 and toll-like receptor-4, but not their membrane subdomain localization. LPS-induced nuclear factor kappa B activation was inhibited by DHA, hence, LPS-induced proinflammatory cytokine synthesis of interleukin-1β and tumor necrosis factor α was strongly attenuated. We suggest that DHA is highly anti-inflammatory by targeting LPS receptor surface location, therefore reducing LPS action on microglia. This effect represents a new insight by which DHA modulates in the brain the expression of proinflammatory cytokines in response to bacterial product.  相似文献

Centrosomes comprise a pair of centrioles surrounded by an amorphous pericentriolar material (PCM). Here, we have performed a microscopy-based genome-wide RNA interference (RNAi) screen in Drosophila cells to identify proteins required for centriole duplication and mitotic PCM recruitment. We analysed 92% of the Drosophila genome (13,059 genes) and identified 32 genes involved in centrosome function. An extensive series of secondary screens classified these genes into four categories: (1) nine are required for centriole duplication, (2) 11 are required for centrosome maturation, (3) nine are required for both functions, and (4) three genes regulate centrosome separation. These 32 hits include several new centrosomal components, some of which have human homologs. In addition, we find that the individual depletion of only two proteins, Polo and Centrosomin (Cnn) can completely block centrosome maturation. Cnn is phosphorylated during mitosis in a Polo-dependent manner, suggesting that the Polo-dependent phosphorylation of Cnn initiates centrosome maturation in flies.  相似文献

A set of gamma-lactones alpha,beta-fused and beta,gamma-fused to carbocycles have been synthesized and evaluated for their in vitro antiproliferative activities using the human cancer cell lines SW1573 (lung), T-47D (breast) and WiDr (colon). The compounds are obtained by intramolecular ring closing metathesis of the corresponding dienes. Active compounds exhibited GI(50) values in the range 8-18 microM. We study the problem of the emergence of cooperation in the spatial Prisoner's Dilemma. The pioneering work by Nowak and May [1992. Evolutionary games and spatial chaos. Nature 415, 424-426] showed that large initial populations of cooperators can survive and sustain cooperation in a square lattice with imitate-the-best evolutionary dynamics. We revisit this problem in a cost-benefit formulation suitable for a number of biological applications. We show that if a fixed-amount reward is established for cooperators to share, a single cooperator can invade a population of defectors and form structures that are resilient to re-invasion even if the reward mechanism is turned off. We discuss analytically the case of the invasion by a single cooperator and present agent-based simulations for small initial fractions of cooperators. Large cooperation levels, in the sustainability range, are found. In the conclusions we discuss possible applications of this model as well as its connections with other mechanisms proposed to promote the emergence of cooperation.  相似文献

The foraging behaviour (grazing time and diet composition), live-weight (LW) changes and parasitic infection (faecal egg counts of gastrointestinal nematodes) of 12 beef cows, 84 ewes and 84 goats suckling their offspring, managed in mixed grazing on heathlands with 24% of improved pasture of perennial ryegrass-white clover, were studied during the years 2003 and 2006. The results showed that goats tended to graze for a longer time, and utilised significantly more heathland vegetation than cattle and sheep, including in their diet in an average of 0.39 herbaceous plants, 0.11 gorse and 0.51 heather over the grazing season, comparing with respective mean values of 0.85, 0.02 and 0.13 in cattle and sheep. Dietary overlap was higher between cattle and sheep (0.76) than between sheep and goats (0.53) or between cattle and goats (0.47). Despite the high performance of autumn-calving cows in spring, sheep had the best LW changes per livestock unit (LU) during the whole grazing season. Goats' performance per LU was lower than in sheep but higher than in spring-calving cows. Regarding offspring production, lambs had higher LW gains per LU than calves and kids. Mean nematode eggs/g fresh faeces (epg) during the grazing season were higher in goats (91 epg) compared with sheep (34 epg) and cattle (14 epg), particularly from September to December. In conclusion, sheep performed best on these heathlands with improved pasture areas if the entire grazing season was considered, despite the good level of production in spring from autumn-calving cows. The results suggested the complementary use of goats in order to increase the effective utilisation of the available vegetation, achieving production levels similar to those from spring-calving cows. Therefore, mixed flocks of sheep and goats would be the most appropriate sustainable systems from the animal production and vegetation use points of view.  相似文献
