Mass (TM) and relative mass (organ mass/body mass; RTM) of the right testis and epididymis (EM and REM, respectively) were determined every 14 days from 10 to 122 days of age for intact boars (I) and boars hemicastrated on Day 10 (HC) in two crossbred herds (Trial 1 and Trial 2). Plasma follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), prolactin, growth hormone (GH), and testosterone were determined in four blood samples from each pig, three collected 24 h prior to castration and one immediately prior to castration. Values for TM and RTM of HC boars were approximately double (p less than 0.0001) those of I boars by 38 days of age, and these differences were maintained through Day 122. Both EM and REM were greater (p less than 0.05) in HC than in I boars from Day 52 to Day 122. The TM, RTM, EM and REM were greater (p less than 0.05) in Trial 1 than in Trial 2 for both I and HC boars from Day 80 to Day 122, indicating an earlier onset of pubertal testicular growth in the Trial-1 boars. Plasma GH concentration was greater (p less than 0.05) in HC than in I boars from Day 16 to Day 38. A transient increase in plasma FSH (p less than 0.05) was observed from Day 24 to Day 38. After Day 38, there was no difference (p greater than 0.05) in FSH or GH between HC and I boars, or between trials. The gallbladder has both storage and contractile properties, but is pressure-volume characteristics have not been fully described. We studied gallbladder pressure, compliance, stress relaxation, and the work performed during infusion-withdrawal of fixed volumes of bile at increments of base-line volume under halothane anesthesia in 13 dogs. Two cannulae were inserted in the gallbladder fundus: one for cyclic infusion-withdrawal of bile, and one for pressure monitoring. Following ligation of the cystic duct, the gallbladder was fully aspirated and then filled to successive predetermined base-line volumes (15, 20, 25, 30, or 35 mL). At each base-line volume, 5 mL of bile was infused and withdrawn at 2.47 mL/min. Studies were performed under basal conditions and with cholecystokinin octapeptide (CCK) infusion (10 or 30 ng.kg-1.h-1iv). Pressure was measured at base-line, after infusion, and after withdrawal. Compliance during infusion (delta V/delta P) was calculated for each cycle. Stress relaxation was defined as the difference between base-line pressure and any reduction in pressure after withdrawal. Hysteresis, the difference between work of infusion and work of withdrawal, was calculated. The results were such that base-line, end-infusion, and end-withdrawal pressures; work of infusion, work of withdrawal, and hysteresis; and stress relaxation all increased significantly with increases in the predetermined base-line volumes (p less than 0.001). Compliance decreased significantly (p less than 0.001) with increasing base-line volume. CCK at 10 ng.kg-1.h-1iv had no effect, but infusion of CCK at 30 ng.kg-1.h-1 significantly (p less than 0.05) increased pressure and work, decreased compliance, and increased stress relaxation compared with controls.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

A theory is developed for the flow of suspensions of blood cells through filters in which the properties of the cells are defined by statistical distributions. It is shown that conditions are generally transient, and computational procedures are developed to compute the pressure drop and the fraction of the pores of the filter containing cells of various types as a function of time. The computations show a large influence of very small concentrations of stiff cells which gradually collect in the filter and effectively plug the filter during the time of a typical test. It is also shown that the mean value of the resistance offered by a cell population with a limited distribution of resistances is more important than dispersion of resistances about the mean in determining the observable pressure curve. Experimental data are presented demonstrating that the drug pentoxifylline reduces the stiffness of leukocytes.  相似文献

Summary An analysis of the allometric relations of the total volumes occupied by prolactin (PRL) and corticotropic (ACTH) cells (PRL volume and ACTH volume, respectively) to body length and a study of the immunocytochemical staining intensity of PRL and ACTH cells were used to determine the differences in activity of PRL and ACTH cells in freshwater-reared and in saltwater-reared Cynolebias whitei during the entire lifespan of this annual cyprinodont fish. An inflection in the allometric relation of PRL volume to body length was observed in fish of one-week old. The relatively large PRL volume in younger fish may be related to PRL cell activity before hatching. No inflections were observed in the allometric relations of PRL volume and ACTH volume to body length at the onset of maturation and the onset of ageing, indicating that the increased pituitary growth in maturing and ageing C. whitei is not the result of changes in PRL or ACTH cells. The slope of the allometric relation of PRL volume to body length in freshwater-reared fish was significantly steeper than the slope in saltwater-reared fish. The PRL volume in adult freshwater-reared fish was eight times larger than that in saltwater-reared fish of the same length. The intensity of immunocytochemical staining of saltwater PRL cells was significantly reduced. These volumetric and staining differences correspond to the low functional demand put upon PRL cells in saltwater-adapted fish. In contrast, the slope of the allometric relation of ACTH volume to body length and the intensity of immunocytochemical staining of ACTH cells were similar in freshwater-reared and in saltwater-reared fish. It is concluded that the functional demand put upon ACTH cells is similar in freshwater-reared and saltwater-reared C. whitei; the involvement of ACTH cells in the osmoregulation of the fish in both environments is similar.  相似文献

The synthesis of N4-methyl-2'-deoxycytidine and its fully protected mononucleotide, suitable for the oligonucleotide synthesis by phosphotriester method is described. A set of octanucleotides - d(CGCGCGCG), d(CG5mCGCGCG), d(CG4mCGCGCG) and dodecanucleotides - d(GGACCCGGGTCC), d(GGA5mCCCGGGTCC), d(GGA4mCCCGGGTCC) has been synthesized in a solution. Physical characterization of the oligonucleotide duplexes by means of UV and CD spectrometry provides the evidence that 4mC similarly to 5mC favours the B--greater than Z transition, although both of these methylated cytosines inhibit the B--greater than A conformational change. N4-Methylcytosine in contrast to 5-methylcytosine reduces the DNA double helix thermal stability.  相似文献

The effect of an antioxidant dibunol and calcium antagonist verapamil on postperfusion release of myoglobin (Mb) and MB-creatine kinase (MB-CK) has been assessed in 30 dogs with experimental coronary occlusive myocardial infarction. It has been shown that reperfusion after 3-hour ischemia does not only accelerate the release of intracellular proteins, but also leads to pronounced myoglobinemia and blood enzymes. In postischemic blood flow recovery with combined dibunol and verapamil preliminary injections, an almost threefold decrease in MB-CK and Mb blood content, as compared to "reperfusion" indexes, was observed by the 10th minute of reperfusion.  相似文献
