The lipid and sterol fractions of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and the anemone Actinia equina were analyzed before and after incubation with cobalt ions. There were significant changes in the lipid and sterol composition, strongly depending on the cobalt ions concentrations. The changes in the lipid composition of both invertebrates were different for neutral lipids and phospholipids. These changes concern the length of the fatty acid chains as well as their unsaturation. The cobalt ions inhibited the oxidation of sterols and their alkylation at C-24. Because of these results we can assume that some of the changes caused by cobalt ions might possess adaptive value. 相似文献

An improved electron density map of photosystem I from Synechococcus elongatus calculated at 4-A resolution for the first time reveals a second phylloquinone molecule and thereby completes the set of cofactors constituting the electron transfer system of this iron-sulfur type photosynthetic reaction center: six chlorophyll a, two phylloquinones, and three Fe4S4 clusters. The acid tolerance of Escherichia coli O157:H7 strains can be overcome by addition of lactate, ethanol, or a combination of the two agents. Killing can be increased by as much as 4 log units in the first 5 min of incubation at pH 3 even for the most acid-tolerant isolates. Exponential-phase, habituated, and stationary-phase cells are all sensitive to incubation with lactate and ethanol. Killing correlates with disruption of the capacity for pH homeostasis. Habituated and stationary-phase cells can partially offset the effects of the lowering of cytoplasmic pH. 相似文献
