Cyanobacteria blooms are common in the Baltic Sea and are consideredto be a poor food source and sometimes toxic to zooplankton. Most experiments demonstrating harmful effects have been short-termincubations with monocultures or simple mixtures of food. Inthis study, a mesocosm approach was used to examine zooplanktonresponses over generation timescales. A toxic strain of thecyanobacterium Nodularia spumigena was added to bag enclosuresof ambient water. The initial mesozooplankton concentrationwas either reduced by prescreening the water or enriched withlocally caught zooplankton. Experiments ran for 15 days, longenough to monitor reproductive success and development of thenext mesozooplankton generations. There was no major harmfuleffect on the zooplankton assemblage, even though the concentrationof the toxin nodularin was in the upper range of field observations. The copepod Eurytemora affinis, rotifers Synchaeta spp. andthe cladoceran Bosmina longispina maritima were able to developand reproduce successfully in the presence of N. spumigena. The only species showing impaired recruitment was the copepodAcartia bifilosa. The general lack of population level effectsfrom N. spumigena in this study can be reconciled with previousobservations of adverse effects. Cyanobacteria alone may bepoor food and toxic to zooplankton, but in the mesocosms a richassemblage of microbiota developed, similar to that associatedwith blooms in the field. We suggest that, in the context ofotherwise food-depleted summer situations in the open BalticSea, zooplankton can derive benefit from cyanobacteria bloomassemblages. 相似文献

Signaling molecules regulating development of the midbrain and anterior hindbrain are expressed in distinct bands of cells around the midbrain-hindbrain boundary. Very little is known about the mechanisms responsible for the coherence of this signaling center. One of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) receptors, Fgfr1, is required for establishment of a straight border between developing mid- and hindbrain. Here we show that the cells close to the border have unique features. Unlike the cells further away, these cells express Fgfr1 but not the other FGF receptors. The cells next to the midbrain-hindbrain boundary express distinct cell cycle regulators and proliferate less rapidly than the surrounding cells. In Fgfr1 mutants, these cells fail to form a coherent band at the boundary. The slowly proliferating boundary cells are necessary for development of the characteristic isthmic constriction. They may also contribute to compartmentalization of this brain region. 相似文献

Filamentous algae may create anoxic, i.e. oxygen free, conditions during night and fish larvae that commonly spend their first months in the littoral may therefore be subject to anoxia. We conducted two different experiments; firstly, we measured behaviour of pike larvae (Esox lucius L.), such as frequency of prey attacks and time in vegetation, in the presence of a chemical predator cue and oxygen deficiency. In the second experimental set-up, pike larval survival was monitored in water with added macro-algal exudates (excreted from Pilayella littoralis) and a low oxygen level (3 mg l− 1). Our results showed that oxygen concentration and the chemical predator signal, caused by three-spined sticklebacks, had strong significant effects on the larval prey attacks. The prey attacks were strongly reduced at 3 mg oxygen l− 1. However, survival of the larvae was not affected by low oxygen and macro-algal exudates. Pike larvae are very tolerant to hypoxia and exudates excreted by the littoral vegetation, whereas prey attacks are strongly decreased in hypoxia when a predator is around. This may have negative consequences for pike larval growth and recruitment in eutrophicated environments. 相似文献

BackgroundAccording to current recommendations, blood samples should be taken in the morning after 15 minutes’ resting time. Some components exhibit diurnal variation and in response to pressures to expand opening hours and reduce waiting time, the aims of this study were to investigate the impact of resting time prior to blood sampling and diurnal variation on biochemical components, including albumin, thyrotropin (TSH), total calcium and sodium in plasma.MethodsAll patients referred to an outpatient clinic for blood sampling were included in the period Nov 2011 until June 2014 (opening hours: 7am–3pm). Each patient’s arrival time and time of blood sampling were registered. The impact of resting time and the time of day for all components was analysed using simple linear regression. The “maximum allowable bias” was used as quality indicator for the change in reference interval.ResultsSignificant diurnal variation was found for albumin (n = 15,544; p<2×10−16), TSH (n = 20,019; p<2×10−16), calcium (n = 13,588; p = 2.8×10−12) and sodium (n = 51,917; p<2×10−16). Further significant influence for resting time was found for albumin (p = 2.6×10−4), TSH (p = 0.004), calcium (p = 8.9×10−7) and sodium (p = 8.7×10−16). Only TSH and albumin were clinically significantly influenced by diurnal variation. Resting time had no clinically significant effect.ConclusionsWe found no need for resting 15 minutes prior to blood sampling. However, diurnal variation was found to have a significant and considerable impact on TSH and, to a minor degree, albumin. This has to be taken into account to ensure that reference intervals provided by the laboratory are valid on a 24-hour basis. 相似文献

BackgroundPersons with brain disorders experience significant psychosocial difficulties (PSD) in daily life, e.g. problems with managing daily routine or emotional lability, and the level of the PSD depends on social, physical and political environments, and psychologic-personal determinants. Our objective is to determine a brief set of environmental and psychologic-personal factors that are shared determinants of PSD among persons with different brain disorders.MethodsCross-sectional study, convenience sample of persons with either dementia, stroke, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, migraine, depression, schizophrenia, substance dependence or Parkinson’s disease. Random forest regression and classical linear regression were used in the analyses.Results722 subjects were interviewed in four European countries. The brief set of determinants encompasses presence of comorbidities, health status appraisal, stressful life events, personality changes, adaptation, self-esteem, self-worth, built environment, weather, and health problems in the family.ConclusionsThe identified brief set of common determinants of PSD can be used to support the implementation of cross-cutting interventions, social actions and policy tools to lower PSD experienced by persons with brain disorders. This set complements a recently proposed reliable and valid direct metric of PSD for brain disorders called PARADISE24. 相似文献

The aim of the work was to study the effects of a decaying cyanobacteria bloom on nutrient dynamics, plankton community development and production rates of bacteria and primary producers. It was hypothesised that the system would turn more heterotrophic following the decay of the bloom. A 10-day outdoors mesocosm experiment was performed in early June in a brackish-water environment. Non-toxic filamentous cyanobacteria Aphanizomenon flos-aquae were added to the treatment, whereas the control lacked cyanobacteria. A. flos-aquae decayed rapidly, and was absent from the units by day 2. Significantly higher bacteria abundances, lower nanoflagellate densities and higher ciliate abundances were found, suggesting a bottom-up regulated process in the treatments bags. N:P ratios were low (6?C12), suggesting N-limitation. Bacteria correlated negatively with numbers of heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF), suggesting grazing on bacteria by HNF. Primary production correlated positively with irradiance, chlorophyll a and inorganic nutrients in all units. The rapidly decaying A. flos-aquae biomass imposed a significant bottom-up regulation in the treatment mesocosms, and the system turned from autotrophic into more heterotrophic with time. The rapid decay also caused some similarities and parallel changes between the treatment and the control. 相似文献
