Global climate change has profound implications on species distributions and ecosystem functioning. In the coastal zone, ecological responses may be driven by various biogeochemical and physical environmental factors. Synergistic interactions can occur when the combined effects of stressors exceed their individual effects. The Red Sea, characterized by strong gradients in temperature, salinity, and nutrients along the latitudinal axis provides a unique opportunity to study ecological responses over a range of these environmental variables. Using multiple linear regression models integrating in situ, satellite and oceanographic data, we investigated the response of coral reef taxa to local stressors and recent climate variability. Taxa and functional groups responded to a combination of climate (temperature, salinity, air‐sea heat fluxes, irradiance, wind speed), fishing pressure and biogeochemical (chlorophyll a and nutrients ‐ phosphate, nitrate, nitrite) factors. The regression model for each species showed interactive effects of climate, fishing pressure and nutrient variables. The nature of the effects (antagonistic or synergistic) was dependent on the species and stressor pair. Variables consistently associated with the highest number of synergistic interactions included heat flux terms, temperature, and wind speed followed by fishing pressure. Hard corals and coralline algae abundance were sensitive to changing environmental conditions where synergistic interactions decreased their percentage cover. These synergistic interactions suggest that the negative effects of fishing pressure and eutrophication may exacerbate the impact of climate change on corals. A high number of interactions were also recorded for algae, however for this group, synergistic interactions increased algal abundance. This study is unique in applying regression analysis to multiple environmental variables simultaneously to understand stressor interactions in the field. The observed responses have important implications for understanding climate change impacts on marine ecosystems and whether managing local stressors, such as nutrient enrichment and fishing activities, may help mitigate global drivers of change.  相似文献

During infection, plant pathogens secrete effector proteins to facilitate colonization. In comparison with our knowledge of bacterial effectors, the current understanding of how fungal effectors function is limited. In this study, we show that the effector AvrL567-A from the flax rust fungus Melampsora lini interacts with a flax cytosolic cytokinin oxidase, LuCKX1.1, using both yeast two-hybrid and in planta bimolecular fluorescence assays. Purified LuCKX1.1 protein shows catalytic activity against both N6-(Δ2-isopentenyl)-adenine (2iP) and trans-zeatin (tZ) substrates. Incubation of LuCKX1.1 with AvrL567-A results in increased catalytic activity against both substrates. The crystal structure of LuCKX1.1 and docking studies with AvrL567-A indicate that the AvrL567 binding site involves a flexible surface-exposed region that surrounds the cytokinin substrate access site, which may explain its effect in modulating LuCKX1.1 activity. Expression of AvrL567-A in transgenic flax plants gave rise to an epinastic leaf phenotype consistent with hormonal effects, although no difference in overall cytokinin levels was observed. We propose that, during infection, plant pathogens may differentially modify the levels of extracellular and intracellular cytokinins.  相似文献

Cophylogeny is the congruence of phylogenetic relationships between two different groups of organisms due to their long‐term interaction. We investigated the use of tree shape distance measures to quantify the degree of cophylogeny. We implemented a reverse‐time simulation model of pathogen phylogenies within a fixed host tree, given cospeciation probability, host switching, and pathogen speciation rates. We used this model to evaluate 18 distance measures between host and pathogen trees including two kernel distances that we developed for labeled and unlabeled trees, which use branch lengths and accommodate different size trees. Finally, we used these measures to revisit published cophylogenetic studies, where authors described the observed associations as representing a high or low degree of cophylogeny. Our simulations demonstrated that some measures are more informative than others with respect to specific coevolution parameters especially when these did not assume extreme values. For real datasets, trees’ associations projection revealed clustering of high concordance studies suggesting that investigators are describing it in a consistent way. Our results support the hypothesis that measures can be useful for quantifying cophylogeny. This motivates their usage in the field of coevolution and supports the development of simulation‐based methods, i.e., approximate Bayesian computation, to estimate the underlying coevolutionary parameters.  相似文献

Whether there are general mechanisms, driving interspecific chemical communication is uncertain. Saccharomycetaceae yeast and Drosophila fruit flies, both extensively studied research models, share the same fruit habitat, and it has been suggested their interaction comprises a facultative mutualism that is instigated and maintained by yeast volatiles. Using choice tests, experimental evolution, and volatile analyses, we investigate the maintenance of this relationship and reveal little consistency between behavioral responses of two isolates of sympatric Drosophila species. While D. melanogaster was attracted to a range of different Saccharomycetaceae yeasts and this was independent of fruit type, D. simulans preference appeared specific to a particular S. cerevisiae genotype isolated from a vineyard fly population. This response, however, was not consistent across fruit types and is therefore context‐dependent. In addition, D. simulans attraction to an individual S. cerevisiae isolate was pliable over ecological timescales. Volatile candidates were analyzed to identify a common signal for yeast attraction, and while D. melanogaster generally responded to fermentation profiles, D. simulans preference was more discerning and likely threshold‐dependent. Overall, there is no strong evidence to support the idea of bespoke interactions with specific yeasts for either of these Drosophila genotypes. Rather the data support the idea Drosophila are generally adapted to sense and locate fruits infested by a range of fungal microbes and/or that yeast–Drosophila interactions may evolve rapidly.  相似文献

Plant sterols combined with exercise beneficially alter lipid levels in hypercholesterolemic adults. The effect of this combination therapy on other indicators of coronary heart disease risk, however, has yet to be determined. The objective of this trial was to investigate the effect of plant sterols and exercise, alone and in combination, on levels of apolipoprotein (apo) A1 and B, adiponectin, ghrelin, and growth hormone in previously sedentary hypercholesterolemic adults. In an 8 week, parallel-arm trial, 84 subjects were randomized to 1 of 4 groups: combination, exercise, plant sterols, or control. Body mass decreased by 1.1% (p < 0.01) and 0.9% (p < 0.05) in the combination and exercise group, respectively. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels decreased (p < 0.01) by 0.30 mmol/L in the combination group and by 0.49 mmol/L in the plant sterol group. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels increased by 7.5% and 9.5% (p < 0.01) in the combination and exercise groups, respectively. Plant sterols increased (p < 0.05) adiponectin levels by 16%. No change in apoA1, apoB, ghrelin, or growth hormone levels were noted in any intervention group. ApoA1 was correlated with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (r = 0.33, p = 0.01), whereas apoB was weakly related to low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (r = 0.13, p = 0.002). Adiponectin was associated with body mass index (r = -0.10, p = 0.006) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (r = 0.17, p = 0.0003). These findings suggest that plant sterols can increase adiponectin levels, thereby possibly reducing the risk of future coronary heart disease.  相似文献

In a four-facility occupational epidemiology study of chloroprene monomer and polymer production workers, the chloroprene (CD) and vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) exposures were modeled for plant specific job title classes. In two facilities an acetylene-based process was used and in the other two plants only a butadiene-based process was used in the monomer synthesis. In the Acetylene process VCM was an undesirable by-product to be removed. In the newer butadiene-based process, VCM was not involved and the exposures to CD were considerably lower than they were in the earlier years. One of the limiting factors was the operator rotation within a number of job titles. This rotation and inability to differentiate between job titles subsumed in job classifications recorded in the work histories required an exposure classification scheme based on an order of magnitude separation of exposure classes. In the four facilities with considerable variation in the mix of the production methods, the CD exposures were remarkably similar in both calculated and measured values. The reductions in exposures were much more dependent upon the improvement of the production methods, rather than deliberate exposure control for occupational hygiene considerations. This is reasonable since the exposures were generally lower than the coeval exposure limits and/or guidelines. The estimated exposures were less than 100 ppm in the pre-1960 era and less than 10 ppm in the 1960-1980 era, less than 1 ppm 1980-1990 era and less than 0.5 ppm thereafter. The exposures were categorized in four classes for VCM and six classes for CD. The characteristic class exposure values were used to cumulate individual exposures over time with a quantification of the potential range for exposures that are reasonably certain to ascribe correct ranking to job classes.  相似文献
