The migratory behaviour and survival pattern of Ancylostoma caninum larvae in an adoptively immunised host

The migratory behaviour and survival pattern of a challenge dose of Ancylostoma caninum larvae was found to be affected by the immunological damage caused and the degree of immunity acquired by the adoptively immunised isogenic female Swiss albino mice. In experimental recipients, larval entry into the lungs during migration was prevented by the liver which acts as an immunological barrier; instead they proceeded into the muscles within 4 h after challenge, where they met allergic death in experimental animals only.     

AChemS: the beginning. Association for Chemoreception Sciences

This paper unfolds the events, the people and the times that led up to the founding of AChemS and fashioned its character during its early formative years. It describes the path over which AChemS came, going from the original assertions and denials for the need of such an organization to its later inception and nascent development. This narration highlights such topics as the debate over the need for AChemS, the role of National Science Foundation in the founding of AChemS, the derivation of the Association's name, the choice of Sarasota and the Hyatt House as the meeting site, the generation of the programs for the early annual meetings, the adoption of the bylaws, the process of incorporation and tax deferment, and the birth of the Givaudan Lectureship. Most emphatically highlighted, however, is the enthusiasm, commitment and hard work that the members of the chemosensory research community displayed in bringing AChemS to fruition.      

gamma-Glutamyl transpeptidase activity in mice: age dependent changes and effect of cortisol.

gamma-Glutamyl transpeptidase (gamma-GT) activity in various organs of mice during ontogenesis has been determined. The activity profile in foetus, neonates and the adult animal were compared to ascertain the functional significance of the enzyme. In addition, the effect of cortisol on gamma-GT activity in adult kidney is presented.     

Possible interaction of potassium embelate, a putative analgesic agent, with opiate receptors

The in vivo studies have been carried out in the rat brain for characterization of binding sites for potassium embelate (ex: Embelia ribes) a potent centrally acting analgesic compound. The results indicate that mixed mu and kappa binding sites in the brain may be involved in the analgesic action of this compound.     

Increased susceptibility of lead exposed chickens to experimental infection of Ascaridia galli

Two sets of one day old, white leghorn (Victoria Strain) chickens were each orally exposed to 1.0 mg lead nitrate daily for 7 days and subsequently infected with 15 and 30 A. galli eggs. These experimental chickens exposed to lead harboured significantly greater worm burden when compared to unexposed controls leading strong support to the view that lead exposure significantly suppressed their immune response to A. galli infection. It also indicated that exposure of lead prior to infection greatly impaired weakened the immune capability of such chickens.
